(Continual front page S) Mechanical Drawing 1 Cr. 5 Grds.9-12 Students will develop the fundamental skills associated with drafting. Opportunities for freehand sketching, orthographic projection, pictorial representations, dimensioning, machine drawings and an introduction to Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD) will also be included. Adv. Mechanical Drawing Cr.5 Grds. 10-12 Prerequisite: Mechanical Drawing 1 Students will participate in developing experiences in preparing detail and assembly drawings, cams and gears, electrical and electronic drafting, descriptive geometry and civil engineering drafting. Students will additionally gain experience in computer assisted drafting. Architectural Drawing Cr. 5 Grds. 11-12 Prerequisite: Adv. Mech. Drawing Students will become familiar with good residential design, Students will design and draw a complete set of plans for a house as a result of the experiences gained in this class, Students will gain experiences utilizing computer assisted drafting as well. Technical Drawing Cr, S- 5* * Variable credits when course offered to students opposite science labs. (Year) Grds, 10-12 Students will develop skills and fundamental understanding of mechanical drawing as a means of technical communication. Modern and traditional drafting methods will be used and students will develop a working knowledge of engineering drawing, CAD (Computer Assisted Drawing) and drafting as they apply to the mechanical, architectural, and civil/structural fields. Woods 1 Cr. S Grids, 9-12 Students with little experience working with wood will be introduced to basic woodwork* ing techniques using both hand and power tools. Instructional areas and individual projects include computer based assignments, shop math and safety. In addition, the students are able to explore finer woodworking techniques and complete more challenging projects such as designing and constructing fine furniture and cabinetry. This experience provides a strong foundation for a career/life skill. Advanced Woods Cr.5 Grds. 10-12 Prerequisite: Woods 1 The students will participate in activities which reinforce the woodworking skills learned in prerequisite offerings. The experiences are expanded to include furniture refinishing, wood bending, glass etching and various community service projects. Upon the completion of this course the student will have a solid base for an entry level construction/carpentry position as well as a personal life skill. Note: Students may take this course more than once with priority given to those recommended by the instructor. VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS _ Arts and Humanities Cr.2.5 Grd. 9 The student will be exposed to creative modes of problem solving that will lead to an understanding of the influences of the arts and their power to create and reflect cultures. Students will analyze nonverbal communication and make informed judgments about cultural products and issues. ^(Required 9th grade course offered in combination with the required TIES course.) yisyalArts Art 1/2 Cr. 5 Grds. 9-12 Students will study the basics of art. The media include pencil, ink, watercolor, tempera, wood, and some crafts. Projects include portraits, figure drawing, relief sculpture, calligraphy and art history. ArtS/4 Cr,5 Grds, 10-12 Prerequisite: Art 1/2 Students will be introduced to lettering, oils, ceramics, three dimensional sculpture, acrylics and more crafts. An emphasis is on creativity. Students repeating Art 3/4 set up their own course in line with specific interests, experiment with various media and techniques or prepare a portfolio for entrance to art school. Arts & Crafts Cr. 5 Grds. 10*12 Students will be afforded the opportunity to discover, demonstrate and utilize various media through a realm of multi-cultural experiences. The basis of instruction is both contemporary and historic in nature and will afford students cross-curriculum opportunities and a variety of hands-on arts and crafts experiences. Ceramics Cr.2,5 Grds. 10-12 Students will explore the expansive field of ceramics utilizing hand-built methods and the potters' wheel. The course includes firing, decorating and glazing techniques, and a brief history of the field of ceramics. Graphics 1 Cr.5 Grds.9-12 Students will explore printing techniques and graphic design. Projects include screen-printing, block and intaglio print Pag* 9 making. In addition, the areas of letterpress, wood cuts and multi-color printing are explored. An introduction to several careers in graphics is also explored. Adv. Graphics Cr. 5 Grds. 10-12 Students will explore advanced graphics techniques including black and white photography, high-contrast photography, photo-stencil processes, computer graphics, air brush and multi-color printing. An emphasis is placed upon the utilization of commercial production techniques. Photography Cr. 2.5 Grds, 11-12 Students will be introduced to the field of photography using the 35 mm format of black and white film. Various aspects of exposing, processing and printing the photographic image will be explored. Topics include camera format, lenses, films, lighting and darkroom procedures. performing Arts Piano Cr, 5 Grds, 9-12 Students will participate in a piano theory class in which individual and group instruction in keyboard skills and basic theory is provided. Instruction includes the study of a variety of styles of musical literature, Music Theory Cr. 5 Grds, 9-12 Students will receive individual and group instruction in theory, harmony, part-writing, and orchestration, Concert Choir Cr. 5 Grds. 9-12 Prerequisite: Audition Students who have a sincere interest in singing will participate in a course designed to improve their vocal techniques and basic music skills. Vocal Music Cn2.5 Grds, 9*12 Students will be provided a foundation in proper vocal techniques and basic music theory. Students will have the opportunity to participate in part-singing and will become familiar with different styles and periods of music. This course is an alternative to the performance oriented Concert Choir. Instrumental Music—The growth in the Red Raider Marching Band has necessitated changes in the manner in which we offer instrumentai music to our students. As in the past, students may be able to take band opposite science labs and/or in conjunction with the Choir, Wind Ensemble Cr.S Grds, 10-12 Prerequisite: Audition Upperolassmen who are accomplished musicians will be enrolled in the "Wind Ensemble". Students will receive instruction in playing music harmoniously as a unit. Marching band, wind ensemble, and jazz ensemble are included in this group. Concert Band Cr.S Grds. 9-12 This band will consist of: freshmen, upperclassmen at an intermediate level of ability andfor students with scheduling difficulties that interfere with their ability to meet at the time the "Wind Ensemble" convenes. Students will participate in marching band, concert band and jazz ensemble, Jazz/Rock Ensemble Cr. 6 Grds, 10-12 Prerequisite: Audition Students will participate in an ensemble and in an atmosphere for creative expression in the art of popular music. Included will be the music of the rock genre from the 1950's to today. The jazz idiom will be studied in the small ensemble setting covering stylos from blues to bop, Students will rehearse* perform, and compose the various styles of music as part of the course requirement. instrument improvisation Cr. 5 Grds. 9-12 Prerequisite: A udition Students will explore the skills needed to improvise in various musical idioms, ranging from Jazz to Rock. Students must be able to play an instrument and read music, Students will apply traditional music theory and analysis and gain an understanding of jazz history and the importance of popular music in American history. Designated reading and listening assignments as well as performances at school functions will be required components. String Orchestra Cr. 5 All Grades Prerequisite: Audition or teacher recommendation. This class is for students who currently are able to play at an intermediate level of ability. Students will receive instruction in playing strings harmoniously as an ensemble and performing. WORLD LANGUAGEJJ French 1 CP ' Cr.S Students will continue to review previously developed material and acquire additional vocabulary and grammatical structures. Poetry and poetic figures of speech as exemplified by Roman poets such as the epic poet, Virgil, will also be studied. French 2 Cr.S CPorADV Grds. 9-12 Prerequisite: French 1 Students will continue the study of French and further develop the four language skills. Students listen to spoken French on cassettes and videos and read authentic materials. Practical vocabulary is studied in thematic units, Students work with partners to develop their speaking and writing skills. French 3CP »Cr,S Grds. 10-12 Prerequisite: French 2 Students will refine the language skills learned the previous tw. years. The presentation of thematic vocabulary is continued with students often engaging in roleplaying situations. Students will also study the monuments and history of Paris, French 4 OP Cr.S Grds. 11-12 Prerequisite: French 3 Students will participate in a course designed to provide maximum exposure to the French language. Students will discuss literary texts, write essays, view French movies, and study vocabulary and grammar in thematic units, Pertinent information relating to foreign travel will also be examined, Latin 1CP Cr. 5 Grds. 9-12 Students will increase their English vocabulary through the study of Latin roots, prefixes, and derivatives. An appreciation of Roman history and culture will also be gained. Carpe diem. Latin 3 CP Cr. 5 Grds. 11-12 Students will thoroughly review Latin grammar, vocabulary, derivatives, roman culture, and reading skills developed in the previous two levels. Rhetoric and figures of speech as exemplified by the great Roman orator, Cicero, are presented and discussed. Latin 4 CP Cr.S Grds. 11-12 Prerequisite: Latin 3 Students will continue to review previously developed material and acquire additional vocabulary and grammatical structures. Speaking and listening skills will be emphasized. Spanish 2 Cr. 5 General or CP orADV Grds. 9-12 Prerequisite: Spanish 1 or Spanish 1 CP Students will have previous topics expanded and spiraled. Personalized collaborative learning activities are utilized to continue the development of listening and speaking skills. Reading, writing, and grammatical skills continue to develop. Spanish 3 Cr, 5 General or CP Grds. 10-12 Prerequisite: Spanish 2 Students will be offered practical, survival situations and simulations to provide opinions, deal with abstract ideas and symbolism, and express emotions, wishes, and preferences using the target language, Spanish 4 CP Cr, & Grds, 11-12, Prerequisite: Spanish 3 Students participating in this rigorous and challenging course will be provided with good preparation for the advanced placement course and/or college level programs. Activities requiring higher order thinking skills are used to continue to develop language usage. HONORS) WORLD LANGUAGE PROGRAM Students who have demonstrated except tional ability and interest in the study of world languages may apply to participate in the honors courses listed below. Honors World Language courses provide an expanded and accelerated approach to the curriculum previously described under the college preparatory listings. The requirements in the writing, speaking and listening domains will be more challenging. Successful applicants will have earned a minimum 3.3 (8+) grade point average over the last 6 marking periods in their chosen language. Students must also receive a recommendation from their current world language instructor. Once enrolled in the program, students must earn a final grade no lower than B- in order to continue to take honors level courses.
