Jackets rout Anthony Wayne; sit atop the NLL
By Scott Buker
The Perrysburg High
School varsity football team
made a strong statement in
their second Northern Lakes
League game this past Friday
night, rolling by the Anthony
Wayne Generals, 31-7, to
spoil the Generals’ homecoming.
Anthony Wayne entered
the game 3-1 and was among
the league favorites to win
the NLL championship this
year. The Jackets proved that
they should not be underestimated.
Perrysburg’s defense contained
the Generals the entire
night. The Jacket defense
held the NLL’s leading rusher,
Sam Bruno, to only 27
yards on 10 carries and
sacked AW quarterback Jake
Reid six times.
In total, Perrysburg limited
the Generals to just 78
total yards, and the only
Anthony Wayne score came
on an interception return for
a touchdown early in the second
quarter.
Meanwhile, Perrysburg
tallied a total of 406 yards on
a night of steady rain, which
a league loss.
Jacket senior quarterback
Steve Slocum once again led
the way. The quarterback
threw for 127 yards and two
touchdowns while also running
for 135 yards on 18 carries.
It was Slocum who got
the Jackets on the board first
in the opening quarter. However,
it was neither through
the air or on the ground as
the senior kicked a 21-yard
field goal at the 7:20 mark
giving Perrysburg an opening
Perhaps the only significant
mistake of the night
occurred on Perrysburg’s
third possession, early in the
second quarter. Slocum’s
pass intended for junior tight
end Nate Patterson was intercepted
and returned 58 yards
for a touchdown, giving
Anthony Wayne a 7-3 lead
Perrysburg answered back
with the same tandem.
Slocum led the Jackets on a
49-yard drive that culminated
with a touchdown pass to
Patterson from five yards
out, making the score 10-3
with 8:45 to play in the half.
After Anthony Wayne
turned the ball over on
downs in Perrysburg territory,
the Jackets capitalized,
going 69 yards in just over
two minutes for their second
touchdown of the game.
Slocum found receiver
Austin Bishop for a nineyard
score with 27 second to
play making the score 17-7
at halftime.
Perrysburg’s opening
drive of the second half took
just under four minutes and
spanned 80-yards ending in a
Mark Delas three-yard
touchdown run to stretch the
lead to 24-7.
With Anthony Wayne
driving deep into Perrysburg
territory, the Generals, facing
fourth and four from the Perrysburg
In addition to Slocum’s
pair of scores. Sophomore
Gus Dimmerling chipped in
68 yards on 18 carries as
well.
Bishop and senior Austin
receivers. Each had three
catches for 44 yards.
“I constantly felt like I was in the hands of experts with Hospice of
The Perrysburg High
School girls cross country
the open race.
Despite the course being
wet and soggy, it was a perfect
day for running, and
many girls managed to post
competitive times.
The varsity squad placed
16th overall, and the junior
varsity team took ninth.
