2012 “Don’t Leaf It” in the Street
When raking or blowing your leaves for fall curbside collection, place the leaves
in the area between the sidewalk and the curb. Please refrain from putting your
leaves in the curb and street. Pictured below are examples of incorrect leaf piles.
These leaves are in the street and also obstructing access to a fire hydrant.
Whether the pile of leaves is small or large,
no piles should be in the street or covering a street storm drain
The Sight Center of
Northwest Ohio will hold its
fifth annual White Cane Walk
on Saturday, September 29,
from 9 a.m. to noon, at the
Flower Hospital campus,
5200 Harroun Road, Sylvania.
This event will provide
much-needed resources to
help deliver services to people
of all ages in our community
who are blind or visually
impaired, and will increase
awareness of the Ohio White
Cane Law.
Despite efforts to educate
drivers, many do not realize
that they must yield the rightof-way
to blind pedestrians
on any public thoroughfare.
The Sight Center is hopeful
that increased awareness will
help to save lives.
“It is our hope that the
White Cane walk will raise
awareness in the general public
about issues facing people
who are blind or visually impaired,”
says Dawn Christensen,
executive director of
the Sight Center of Northwest
Ohio.
Participants will learn the
basics of how to use a white
cane and how to serve as a
sighted guide to someone
STREET TREE INVENTORY
If you’ve noticed people spending a little more time
around town looking at trees these days, the City of Perrysburg
Department of Public Service is starting a new
street tree inventory. This multiple step process starts
by identifying each tree in our tree lawns, boulevards
and parks. The tree is then ranked for overall health
and appearance. We use the ranking to determine
whether the tree will need immediate removal, severe
pruning, moderate to light pruning or no action at all.
There is software called “Tree Tracker” that allows City
staff to update the condition of each tree and log what
action was taken, if any, to preserve the tree.
Askren Municipal Forestry is conducting the survey for
the City. Their staff is comprised of several very qualified
individuals that are all Arborists and have Bachelor’s
Degrees in Urban Forestry or Wildlife Biology.
Askren has also developed the software application.
Once the survey is complete, they will train City staff to
use the software and implement the program. The software
is also compatible with all GIS applications currently
being used by the City.
Usually as the weather begins
to cool down, animal shelters,
including the Toledo Area
Humane Society, begin to see
a slow-down in the number of
cats and kittens coming
through their doors. However,
that doesn’t seem to be the
case for TAHS yet this season.
The Humane Society is still
reporting more than 100 cats
and kittens being brought in
each week.
“As the area’s only openadmission
facility, it is incredibly
important to TAHS to
save as many lives as possible
and to find homes for as many
animals as possible,” said John
Dinon, TAHS executive director.
To help these furry felines
continue to find new homes,
TAHS is bringing back its successful
summer cat and kitten
adoption specials, “$10 Tuesdays”
and “$5 Fridays.” Every
Tuesday and Friday, through
October 26, all cat and kitten
adoption fees will be just $10
and $5 respectively. That includes
spaying/neutering, a vet
exam, all age-appropriate vaccinations,
and microchipping.
These reduced-rate adoption
specials have helped propel
the Toledo Area Humane
Society in their efforts for the
ASPCA $100K Rachel Ray
Challenge. The momentum
they began building in May
with “$5 Fridays” continued
through the start of the Challenge
and boosted TAHS off to
a great start in the challenge
that began in August–so much
so, that after just one month,
TAHS found homes for more
“We are off to a great start.
