Open to the public , the event will feature family activities. In addition to recognizing four Diamante (diamond in Spanish) Award recipients, scholarships were presented to more than 20 students from Owens Community College, Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University and the University of Toledo–four northwest Ohio academic institutions whose partnership in the awards program benefits their Latino students. Diamante Award recipients are chosen based on recognition of exemplary leadership/achievements within the Latino community or community at large, or demonstrated excellence in their fields; dedication and commitment in an ethical and inclusive fashion, and modeling qualities and behaviors of a mentor for youth and the community. In the category of corporate/community agency the award went to Nueva Esperanza Community Credit Union (NECCU). The organization was federally chartered in 2010 to provide access to financial service to the largely underserved Hispanic population of Toledo. Created to offer services to immigrant and low-income Hispanic families, the credit union has obtained a low-income designation from the National Credit Union Administration. NECCU is the first Latino community credit union in Ohio and provides services in the Old South End of Toledo, an economically underprivileged area of 4,406 households. Alberto Serrano-Chavez of Maumee received the Dia- mante Award in the category of Latino Youth Leadership. Mr. Serrano-Chavez was born in Logrono, Spain and moved to Ohio at the age of 3. He graduated with honors from Maumee High School in 2012. Mr. Serrano-Chavez was born with a congenital heart defect called transposition of the main arteries and underwent several open heart surgeries and other operations to correct his heart issues. Now fully recovered, he has been heavily involved in community service and leadership, beginning with his acceptance into the 2009-10 class of Youth Leadership Toledo. After graduating from Youth Leadership Toledo, he was a two-year member of YIPEE during his junior and senior years in high school. While in YIPEE, he learned about fund-raising, grants and non-profit organizations alongside other Youth Leadership Toledo graduates. Both years that he was a member, the organization raised more than $17,000. Mr. Serrano-Chavez, plans on studying individualized-business with an emphasis on fund-raising and a minor in music at Bowling Green State University. He wants to help others and envisions working for Musicians On Call, an organization that brings musicians to hospitals to perform for people who are too sick to leave their beds. The recipient of the Diamante Award in the category of Latina adult leadership was Cynthia “Cindy” Geronimo of Toledo. Ms. Geronimo serves as the executive director of the Lucas County Land Bank, whose mission is to preserve property values and strengthen neighborhoods. A dedicated public servant, she is passionate about making a positive impact in the surrounding communities. After graduating from Libbey High School, Ms. Geronimo enlisted in the 180th Ohio Air National Guard where she served for nine years and attained the rank of staff sergeant. She was honorably discharged in 1995 and received several honors including two medals of Honor for Expeditionary Service and Meritorious Service. Alumni group plans annual craft show The Holland-Springfield Alumni Association will host its annual fall festival and craft show on Saturday, October 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Springfield High School, 1470 South McCord Road in Holland. The event will offer a craft show, carnival activities and a haunted hallway trick-or treat area hosted by DECA. Proceeds will benefit graduating seniors. Receiving the award for Latina adult professional was Celeste Taylor of Toledo. Arriving at EOPA years ago, Ms. Taylor advocated for services in the Latino community to include translating all materials into Spanish to provide self-sufficiency opportunities, facilitating Spanish-speaking workshops and raising funds to help children and families receive new clothing for winter and toys for Christmas. To ensure that Latinos are treated fairly, she instituted several procedures and programs to meet their needs. Such efforts include hiring a Bilingual Family Service Worker who provides services to Latino families in Spanish, securing multiple grants to enhance the lives of area residents and obtaining school supplies for Latino children. Three Perrysburg High School music ensembles will kick-off this year’s concert series at First United Methodist Church on Sunday, October 21, at 3 p.m. Featured groups include the Symphonic Chorale, Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus. There will be 118 students performing directed by Joel Hamilton. Some of the selections include “Earth Song” and “It Takes a Village,” performed by the Chorale; “Susan Brown,” “Goodnight Sweetheart,” “Jubilate,” and “Come Travel With Me” sung by the Men’s Chorus. Among the songs the Women’s Chorus will be singing are “Alleluia” and “My Guy.” Slated for this season’s series are FUM’s Chancel Choir and orchestra perform- THERE ARE NO DO-OVERS AT RETIREMENT. In addition to Diamante Award winners, scholarships were awarded to students exhibiting academic excellence, service and leadership at the highest level. The annual Diamante Awards, comprising Owens Community College, Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University and the University of Toledo, was founded in 1989 by IMAGE of Northwest Ohio, a local chapter of a national Latino non-profit organization, to recognize individuals and organizations in the local Hispanic community for their outstanding contributions. Bike the S.E.T. and Lunch Bike the Slippery Elm Trail from the Rudolph Parking Area to North Baltimore, approximately an eight-mile trip one way, on Saturday, September 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The group will stop now and then to take in scenery and look for animals. Lunch will be at the Whistle Stop Inn before returning to Rudolph. Space is limited. Participants should bring at least $10 for lunch. Scarecrow Workshop Join in the fun of the fall tradition of building scarecrows on Tuesday, October 9, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Wood County Historical Center. Straw, string, support pole, and refreshments will be provided. Participants should bring scarecrow clothes, decorations and support for the scarecrow’s back and arms (to attach to the display pole, if needed). Finished scarecrows can be taken home or entered in the annual Scarecrow Contest to win cash prizes. Forms will Maumee Bay River Festival set for Sunday, September 30 The Maumee Bay River Festival will be a one day festival, full of activities, music and beer, to raise awareness about the Maumee River, Lake Erie and our watershed. The festival is sponsored by Lake Erie Waterkeeper, Maumee Bay Brewing Company, Metorparks of the Toledo Area, Republic Services of Ohio, Lake Erie Western Alliance for Sustainability (LEWAS), Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, and Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District. More organizations are participating by displaying information at booths at the festival. This will bring ecological, biological, recreational and logistical information to the public about the important bodies of fresh water that support our daily lives. In addition to the education and involvement for the community, the festival is offering several other exciting components. There will be discounted boat rides on the Sandpiper. In the afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard Toledo Station will bring its boat to the docks downtown next to the Sandpiper for people of all ages to explore. Scarecrow Contest The 10th annual Scarecrow Contest is open to individuals, families, community and youth groups, and businesses. Entries will be on display for the Folklore and Funfest at the Historical Center on October 20. Prizes are: $100, grand prize; $50, second place; $25, third place, and $25, age16 years and younger. The deadline to enter is Monday, October 8, or October 9, for those attending the scarecrow workshop. The Maumee Bay River Festival will be held outdoors in the sideyard at the Oliver House, home of the Maumee Bay Brewing Company. The Maumee Bay Brewing Company will feature an exclusive festival brew called the Maumee Sturgeon Ale. This will be available on tap at the festival, along with other local beers, made with local water. The sturgeon is the mascot and logo for Lake Erie Waterkeeper. The Oliver House will be grilling food outdoors and provide a full menu at the brewery inside. Tickets for the festival are $5, and proceeds will benefit Lake Erie Waterkeeper, a 501c3 organization. Musical entertainment includes: Russ Franzen, Rachel Richardson, Patrick Lewandowski, Estar Cohen Quintet, The Antivillains, Ramona Collins, and more. The festival will be held rain or shine. Kyle Wright and Elizabeth Rumpf engaged to wed Elizabeth Marie Rumpf, daughter of Tom and Pam Rumpf of Perrysburg, and Kyle Edward Wright, son of Douglas and Kathi Wright of Pemberville, announce their engagement. Elizabeth graduated from Perrysburg High School in 2007, and from Michigan State University in 2011, with a bachelor’s degree in human resources. She is employed in human resources by Kellermeyer Bergensons Services in Maumee. Kyle is a 2005 graduate of Eastwood High School and a 2009 graduate of Bowling Green State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a specialization in pre-law. He plans to graduate this December from the University of Toledo College of Law and is employed by the Law Offices of Davies, Ruck, & Speweik in Pemberville. An August 2013 wedding at Grace Church in Perrysburg, is planned. ‘Henry County in the Great War’ program set for October 3 The Wood County Historical Center and Museum, in partnership with the Department of German, Russian and East Asian Languages at Bowling Green State University, will present its annual German-American program on Wednesday, October 3, at 7 p.m., at the Wood County Historical Center and Museum, 13660 County Home Rossford United Methodist Church will host a fish fry on Friday, September 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu includes fish, cheesy potatoes, salad, roll, dessert and drink. The cost is $7 for adults; $6, seniors; $4, children ages 5 to 12, and free for children age 4 and younger. Dinners will be available to eat in or carry out. Linsey is the daughter of Jim Hummel and Lin Makatura of Perrysburg. Kyle is the son of Diana Ganues of Toledo, and Mike Ganues of Marysville, Tennessee. The bride and her Maid of Honor carried bouquets, mothers wore corsages, and the gentlemen wore boutonnieres all of pink and red roses accented with pearls and created by the bridal party. The turquoise water provided the backdrop for the wedding and reception on the beach. The couple stayed in Negril for their honeymoon, and plan to return to Jamaica in November to celebrate their one year anniversary. The bride is a 2004 graduate of Perrysburg High School, and a 2008 graduate of Bowling Green State University. She is employed at a local marketing firm. The bridegroom is a 2004 graduate of Perrysburg High School. He is employed as a service consultant at Dave White Chevrolet. They reside in Sylvania. The Toledo Walk will be held on Sunday, October 7, at the Lucas County Recreation Center, with registration starting at 12:30 p.m. and the walk beginning at 2:30 p.m. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is an experience for more than 3,000 participants in northwest Ohio who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease, how to get involved with the cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Each walker will join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. “Funds raised will provide care and support services to over 38,000 residents of northwest Ohio living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research,” said Salli Bollin, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Northwest Ohio Chapter. To start or join a team, visit the Web site at www.alz.org/walk. ‘Moneyball’ to be shown at Way Library October 4 The “Show Me the Movie” feature film series at Way Library will present “Moneyball” on Thursday, October 4, at 2 p.m. Admission and refreshments are offered free of charge. No reservations are needed for this adults-only film showing. “Moneyball” is a biographical drama based on the true story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane’s successful attempt to put together a baseball club based on computer-generated player analysis. The film stars Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Owens band concert Oct. 14 The Owens Community College Concert Band will present a fall concert at 2:30 p.m., on Sunday, October 14, in the Fine & Performing Arts Center Theater on the Owens campus. The program will include the patriotic composition “An American Fanfare,” Sousa and King marches, songs from the Broadway show “The Jersey Boys,” a saxophone soloist playing “Harlem Nocturne,” and more. Special guests will be music students from the Toledo School for the Arts joining the band to perform “American Salute,” “The Center Ring,” “Moravian Dance,” and “New York: 1927.” The concert is free, and there will be refreshments in the lobby following the performance. Timothy Duly receives degree Timothy Duly graduated in August 2011 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. His thesis work focused on developing simulations of ionospheric activity and comparing them with observations. A 2005 graduate of Perrysburg High School, Timothy received his bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from Ohio State University in 2009. He is currently pursuing a PhD from UIUC. Moms Club open house set for Oct. 11 Moms Club of Perrysburg will hold an open house on Thursday, October 11. The club is a non-profit support group designed especially for stay-at-home mothers who are seeking support and friendship. The club offers playgroups, monthly meetings, casual gatherings, activity groups and more. The club is open to all athome mothers in Perrysburg, Maumee, Rossford and Walbridge. Health Fair set for Tues., October 2 Homewatch CareGivers is providing flu shots and blood pressure screenings. The public can get flu shots between the hours of 1 and 7 p.m, at the Homewatch CareGivers facility at 5650 West Central Avenue, Suite B. The cost is $35 per flu shot, but is covered by most insurance plans. A more comprehensive Health Fair is scheduled for Tuesday, October 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their facility. Providers from Homewatch CareGivers, Gentiva Home Health and Odyssey Hospice, Progressive Therapy Alternatives, Kingston Residences, Ohioans Home HealthCare, Mobile Meals, WellsBrooke Premium Home Health Care, Lagrange and Swanton Pharmacies, Northwest Ohio Med Equipment and Crow Creek Therapeutics will be exhibiting. Services for attendees will include flu shots, blood pressure testing, balance screenings, medication safety instructions, hospice consulting, information on skilled nursing facilities and many other health resources. Historic Perrysburg to hold annual Gingerbread House contest Historic Perrysburg will hold its second Gingerbread House contest from November 17 through December 15, with the support of Way Library.
