John G. Ault, 84, of Perrysburg,
died September 20,
2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital.
He was born in Perrysburg,
on November 11, 1927, to
William and Matilda “Lucy”
(Kiefer) Ault. Mr. Ault was
a farmer for 38 years and
drove a school bus for
Rossford Schools.
Mr. Ault served his country,
the region, Wood
County and Perrysburg
Township throughout his
entire life.
He was a World War II
Army veteran and a charter
member of the Perrysburg
Township Fire Department
and the Perrysburg Chamber
of Commerce. Mr. Ault was
a Perrysburg Township
Trustee for 10 years; a
Wood County Commissioner
for 15 years; served
on the board of directors for
TMACOG; an active participant
in the American Legion
Buckeye Boys State
program; served on the
Board of Trustees of Owens
Community College for 22
years, Wood County Regional
Water and Sewer District,
Banc Ohio and
Citizens Bank.
He also was a director of
Perrysburg Grain and Supply
for 15 years.
Mr. Ault was awarded
the Spirit of Wood County
Award for outstanding service
in self government.
He was a member of Fraternal
Order of Eagles 2322,
Wood County Farm Bureau
and Luckey Legion 240. He
also was an active member
of St. Rose Catholic Church,
where he served as an usher
for many years.
Mr. Ault is survived by
his wife of 63 years, Leona;
sons, Rick (Kenda), Tim
(Amy) and Bill (Beth) Ault;
grandchildren, Amy (Brad)
Keller, Nicole (G.T) Parris,
Daniel (Aly) Ault, Dana
(Glenn) Merritt, Rick
(Kristy) Ault and Jeremy
Ault; great-grandchildren,
Paul and Addison Parris,
Ava and Ryder Ault, Mason,

Evan and Henry Keller, and
sister, Barbara Sattler. He
was preceded in death by his
brother-in-law, Robert Sattler.

Mabel Ann Friess, 72, of
Perrysburg, died Thursday,
September 20, 2012, at Hospice
of Northwest Ohio. She
was born on July 11, 1940, in
Perrysburg, to Clarence and
Helen (Seiling) Carstensen.
She was a member of
Grace United Methodist
Church and a charter member
of the Perrysburg Township
Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed
doing Hungarian embroidery
and was a longtime
member of the Calvin United
Church of Christ Embroidery
Club in east Toledo.
Ms. Friess is survived by
her children, Fred (Judi), Olen
Jr. (Peggy), Tom (Diane) and
Cindy Tidwell; 13 grandchildren;
eight great-grandchildren;
brothers, Vernon, James
(Pat) and Robert (Ruth)
Carstensen; sister in-law,
Margaret Carstensen, and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by
her husband of 49 years, Olen
“Oley” Friess, in 2005. She
also was preceded in death by
her son, Ronald; sister, Donna
Carstensen, and brother,
Harold Carstensen.
Funeral services were held
Monday, September 24, at
Grace United Methodist
Church, Perrysburg. Interment
was in Fort Meigs
Cemetery. Arrangements
were made by the Sujkowski
Funeral Home of Rossford.
•MARTHA CORNELIUS
Martha L. Cornelius, 85,
of Perrysburg, died Friday,
September 21, 2012, at Hospice
of Northwest Ohio in
Perrysburg. She was born on
July 9, 1927, in Ford City,
Pennsylvania, to Joseph and
Mary (Gocal) Gercak.
After graduating from
Rossford High School, she
married Paul Cornelius and
moved to Perrysburg, where
they raised three children.
The couple retired to Sun
City, Arizona. She enjoyed
spending time with her family.
Ms. Cornelius is survived
by her children, Sue (Victor)
Williams of Perrysburg, and
Paul (Carol) Cornelius of
Tucson, Arizona; daughter-inlaw,
Tammy Cornelius; seven
grandchildren; 13 great
grandchildren, and several
nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her husband,
Paul, in 1997; son,
James Cornelius; sisters,
Mary Gercak, Dorothy Parrish
and Frances Lindley;
brothers, Louis and Edward
Gercak.
According to her wishes,
there will be no visitation and
interment will be private.
Arrangements are being
made by the Sujkowski Funeral
Home of Rossford.

A free Medicare Checkup
presentation-only event
will be held Thursday, September
27, at 1 p.m., at the
Wood County Senior Center,
305 North Main Street in
Bowling Green.
The event coincides with
Medicare’s October 15 to
December 7 annual enrollment
period. The sessions,
offered by the Ohio Department
of Insurance’s Senior
Health Insurance Information
Program, are intended
to help people review
changes to Medicare and determine
their best coverage
option for 2013.
At the Medicare Checkup,
beneficiaries can learn
about recent changes to
Medicare, such as deductibles,
co-pay and coinsurance
amounts; Medicare
Advantage and Part D plan
options and financial assistance
programs. Attendees
should bring their prescription
drugs list with dosages
and preferred pharmacy, and
informaiton on retirement
coverage, Veteran’s Administration
or other medical

for beneficiaries, family

Ruth L. (Adams) Thompson,
79, died Saturday, September
22, 2012, at Hospice
of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg.
She was born April 22,
1933, in Perrysburg, to Eric
“Sam” and Myra (Wieland)
Adams. She married Richard
Thompson on August 14,
1954.
Ms. Thompson was an
LPN for various Cleveland
and Perrysburg hospitals.
She was a private nurse and
caregiver for the elderly
around the Perrysburg area.
She was a member of Zoar
Lutheran Church, enjoyed
crocheting, skeet shooting,
playing cards and spending
time with her dogs.
She is survived by her sister,
Kathryn (John) Piatt;
brother, James (Barbara)
Adams and sister-in-law,
Gloria Adams. She was preceded
in death by her husband,
Richard, on October
12, 1972. She also was preceded
in death by her brothers,
Roland, Samuel and Tom
Adams, and sisters, Wilma
(Richard) Stemen and Janet
Adams.
Funeral services will be
held today, September 26, at
11 a.m., at the Witzler-Shank
Funeral Home, 222 East
South Boundary Street, Perrysburg,
with the Rev. Timothy
Philabaum officiating.
Burial will follow in Fort
Meigs Union Cemetery.

Christine Robinson “Judy”
Heckes died July 2, 2012. She
was born in Toledo, to Jefferson
Davis Robinson and
Christine (Miller) Robinson
on May 28, 1926. Her grandfather,
Jefferson D. Robinson
Sr. was president of the
Libbey Glass Company. Her
father was vice president.
She attended the Ottawa
Hills School, Baldwin School
in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania,
and graduated from Perrysburg
High School, and Finch
Junior College in New York
City. She spent much of her
time traveling between her
two homes in Stamford and
Sarasota. She was a member
of the Sarasota Field Club, an
avid tennis player and enjoyed
all of her family, as well as her
kitty, Clairabell.
She is survived by her husband,
Daniel Andriotes of
Sarasota, Florida; son,
Michael Pim Goodbody of
South Londonderry, Vermont;
grandchildren, Stewart Goodbody
Israni of New York City,
Lucas Miller Goodbody of
Chicago, Illinois, and Freer
Goodbody Ferenc of Stamford,
Connecticut; greatgranddaughters,
Alice Pim
Israni and Miller June Ferenc,
and brother, Joseph Robinson

She will be buried in
Toledo, on Friday, October 5,
at 11 a.m., at Woodlawn

Lebanese Dinner on Sunday,

Middle Eastern food prepared
by members of the Benevolent

grape leaves, baked kibbee,

Mary “Rita” Gerrard, 71,
of Perrysburg, died Tuesday,
September 18, 2012, at
Parkcliffe Alzheimer’s
Community of Toledo. She
was born on October 11,
1940, in Toledo, to Louis
and Irene Giovanoli. She
was a 1958 graduate of
Notre Dame Academy and
on May 6, 1961, she married
Richard Gerrard.
Mrs. Gerrard had worked
at Rossford Ordnance after
she graduated from high
school and during her marriage.
She and her husband
were the owners and operators
of Gerrard’s Foods in
Rossford for 25 years before
retiring.
She enjoyed golfing and
playing tennis at Belmont
Country Club and golfing in
Florida during the winter
season. She also enjoyed
spending time with her
grandchildren.
She is survived by her
husband of 51 years,
Richard “Dick” Gerrard;
daughters, Kelly (Frank)
Zitzman and Lisa (Jack)
Dillon; grandchildren,
Emerson, Ashton and Jack
Zitzman and Patrick and
Ryan Dillon, and many
nieces and nephews. She
was preceded in death by
her brother, Richard Giovanoli,
and sister, Barbara
Welter.

to the community, the Messenger
Journal provides free
obituaries. These obituaries,
however, should conform to our
style.
Limited details about the
deceased person’s personal
life are allowed.
Kitchen of Hope
to hold birthday
celebration
September 28
The Kitchen of Hope
free meal program will hold
a birthday celebration on
Friday, September 28, from
noon to 1 p.m.
The Kitchen of Hope
program started in 2002 and
is staffed by volunteers in
the community. This lunch
meal is provided monthly at
Zoar Lutheran Church in
Perrysburg to Wood County
residents on fixed incomes,
including senior citizens.
Special event meals are
served on Easter, Thanksgiving
and Christmas.
Throughout the years,
Kitchen of Hope has served
hot, free meals to thousands
of individuals and families.
Reservations are required
for the special birthday
celebration.

Attention All Veterans
Who served outside the continental limits of the
U.S. and have earned a campaign or service medal
recognized by the VFW as meeting the campaign
medal requisite for VFW membership.
