Cherokee does well on graduation tests
BY CAROLYN MATHEWS
carolynmathews@ledgernews.com
Only a small percentage of Cherokee’s 11th-graders
failed to pass this year’s Georgia High School Graduation
Test (GHSGT) on the first try. Regular program
students had a 99 percent pass rate in mathematics
and a 98 percent pass rate in language arts, social studies
and science. Students must pass all sections of the
test to gain a high-school diploma.
When special education and limited English students
are factored into the results, 98 percent of all students
passed mathematics, with 97 percent passing in
the other three test areas.
Cherokee students were up on all sections of the
test. In language arts, regular ed students were up 2
percent in language arts, 1 percent in mathematics,
four percent in social studies and three percent in science.
Seventy-nine percent of special education students
passed the language arts segment on the first try, as
well as 79 percent of limited English students. For limited
English students, that percentage is up 47 points;
for special education students it was down one point.
Eighty-eight percent (up 13 points from last year) of
special education students passed mathematics on the
first try, 86 percent (up 10 points) passed social studies
and 85 percent (up 10 points) passed science.
Limited English students had a first-try pass rate of
95 percent in mathematics (up 11 points), 81 percent in
social studies, (up 41 points), and 68 percent in science,
(up 13 points). Assessment Director Dr. Susan Padgett-
Harrison said the number of English Language
Learner students is so small, usually under 30, that the
statistical variations on pass rates appear more significant
than they would be with a larger group.
“Improvement was shown in all four subjects for all
students even as the more rigorous Georgia Performance
Standards (GPS) are phased in to the assessments,”
said Superintendent Dr. Frank Petruzielo.
Regular education students were five percentage
points above the state GHSGT in math, 8 points above
the state in language arts, and 10 points above the state
in science. In social studies, regular ed students were
11 percentage points above the state.
Special Education students improved from 10-13
percentage points in mathematics, science and social
studies, and still far exceed state percentages of students
in special education passing the GHSGT, data
shows.
State averages for special education were 56 percent
in language arts, 63 percent in math, 56 percent in social
studies and 55 percent in science.
At the state level, State School Superintendent
Kathy Cox was pleased with results as a whole.
Test results for Georgia's high school students
statewide rose in all subject areas.
Cherokee makes 10-point improvement on must-pass test
BY CAROLYN MATHEWS
carolynmathews@ledgernews
Cherokee students this year
made significant gains on state-required
tests that dictate whether
students will be promoted. In particular,
83 percent of Cherokee
County School District eighthgraders
passed the Georgia Criterion
Referenced Competency Test
(GCRCT) mathematics test on the
first administration, compared to
just 73 percent last year.
Last year, statewide scores in
eighth-grade math showed a 60 percent
first-time-pass rate. The
raised expectation brought about
by new Georgia Performance Standards
and reflected in the test were
blamed for thousands of children
having to attend summer school.
Superintendent Dr. Frank
Petruzielo attributed last year’s
poor math GCRCT on the state raising
the cut-off score for passing to
a too-high level. He said this year
showed significant improvement.
State law mandates that students
in grade 3 pass the reading test and
students in grades 5 and 8 pass
reading and mathematics to be promoted
to the next grade. The law
does provide some flexibility to
school districts in this regard on a
case-by-case basis, Petruzielo said.
New Georgia Performance Standards
were being tested on all levels.
In Cherokee, on the first administration
of the test this spring:
• Ninety-five percent of 3,163 students
passed third-grade reading,
equalling the 2008 percentage;
• Ninety-three percent of 2,881
students passed fifth-grade reading,
equalling the 2008 percentage;
• Eighty-eight percent of 2,881
students passed fifth-grade math,
compared to 81 percent in 2008;
• Ninety-seven percent of 2,711
students passed eighth-grade reading,
compared to 95 percent in 2008;
• Eighty-three percent of 2,711
students passed eighth-grade
math, versus 73 percent in 2008.
Students in grades 3, 5 and 8, who
did not pass the tests the first time
will receive remediation the last
week of school, rather than in summer
school, district officials said.
Results for the second administration
will be received in mid-July.
Petruzielo said the systemwide
results include a special needs population
of 11.4 percent and a limited-English
proficient population of
3.4 percent. Systemwide, 143 students
will need remediation in
third-grade reading; 213 students
will need remediation in fifthgrade
reading; 359 students will
need remediation in fifth-grade
math; 85 students will need remediation
in eighth-grade reading and
450 students will need remediation
in eighth-grade math.
