Francesco Bergamini (Italian, 1851-1900), signed l.l., housed in gilt 

and gesso frame. painting depicts a wedding party parading through 

town. Italian tradition holds that the couple, followed by guests, 

walk through the streets to the chapel. They also walk to the 

reception, a is the case here - the bride’s veil has been pulled back. 


The style and layout of the town is a motif that Bergamini used in 

exterior paintings of everyday life; 31.75 x 19.5 in. Visible stretcher 

frames, craquelure. Canvas restretched.

Oil on Canvas 

Frederick Soulacroix (French, 1858-1953), titled Resting with Fan, 

signed and dated Florence, 1889; 24 x 12.75 in. and housed in 

original decorative gilt and gesso frame. 

although there is some discrepancy over his nationality (either 

French or Italian), Soulacroix spent the majority of his life in Italy. 

He lived in rome until the age of four when his father, Charles 

Soulacroix, a painter himself, gained work in paris. returning to Italy 

in 1870, Soulacroix spent time in Firenze, where he studied at the 

Academia de Bella Arte and the Scuola di Pittura. Soulacroix married 

in Firenze in 1890 and had four children in Italy. at some point, 

Soulacroix probably moved back to France, because in 1924, the 

French authorities nominated the painter Officier d’Academie.

Working in Italy around the turn of the 20th century, a majority 

of Soulacroix’s works were bought by outside art buyers, mostly 

americans, Britains, Germans, South americans and Canadians. 

Currently, his paintings are held in many private collections around 

the world. This portrait is an example of Soulacroix’s typical style: a 

realistic portrait of a woman posing in an interior space that features 

luxuriant fabrics, furniture and fine accents that suggest it is a stately 

home. Soulacroix has used a detailed handling of paint to highlight 

the lush surfaces of the fabrics. 

Recently cleaned. Small inpainting to left above circular couch cushion.

tin glazed earthenware male and female Majolica figures playing 

instruments, by an unknown maker. The male with impressed 4993;

37 in. Flute is missing from male figure. Bow on his right knee repaired 

and one finger repaired.

56 Spanish Vargueno Chest 

16th century. Chest decorated with elaborate 

iron hardware over red velvet. Writing surface 

falls forward and rest on two pull out supports 

with carved shell knobs. The interior consist 

of eleven drawers and two doors, decorated 

with lozenge-shaped inlay, painted and gilded, 

architectural elements of broken pediments, 

arches and turned colonnettes, some 

constructed of bone. The cabinet base of two 

drawers over two doors with diamond moldings, 

surrounded by relief carved geometric design, 

all painted and gilded. retains iron hardware and 

locks, some with traces of gilt; ht. 59, wd. 41, dp 

16 in. Expected wear, repair to pull-out supports, 

small patch on front upper section, scattered 

losses, later replaced feet. Velvet fabric faded.

wd. 39, dp. 19 in. Repair or replacement to top edge strip of wood 

near hinges. Velvet fabric faded.

61 Spanish Colonial revival table 

19th century, a gate-leg table of walnut with pine secondary, 

rectangular scrubbed top, skirt below contains a drawer at each 

end with iron drop pull, followed by turned legs. decorative carved 

drawers, apron, and shaped stretcher boards. Two drop leaves, 

crown atop an elaborate scroll design carving on the scallop 

shaped leaves. Legs for leaf support move on iron hinges; ht. 31, wd. 

33, dp. 16(leaves down), 58(leaves up) in. Small patch to top, lower 

section of one leaf restored including carving, one drawer replaced 

does not match and shows heavy wear.

62 Folk Art Altar Piece for Saint Barbara 

possibly portuguese, 1900 to early 20th century, folk art 

altar piece for the feast day of Saint Barbara, december 4th. 

Constructed of gesso and wood and painted, it has applied 

metal and paper decoration. a carved figure representing 

St. Barbara stands before a stained glass window with 

carved symbols from her legend, such as a tower and 

branches. Below, a priest and altar boy. plaque at base reads

on the shores of the valley). after its violent birth, the Black Sea 

became a hub of trade and communication, and far more hospitable 

to humans; the Greeks colonized the shores beginning about the 8th 

century BC, and the romans continued the process half a millennium 

later. and at its origin, at the city of Constantinople, Europe and asia 

meet. Currently matted and shrink wrapped, although wrapping has 

been partially split. Map is mounted at the corners, but not laid down.

This is the old World as known in the 17th 

century, marked with arctic, Temperate, Tropical, 

antarctic zones. putti hold title banner and sit atop 

cartouche, acanthus leaves and scrolls embellish 

both. Winds blow from heads at foot of cartouche 

and lower corners, while monster fish and ships 

ply the oceans. The perspective is unusual in 

that africa is centered, and Europe appears 

rather insignificant. no land is charted beyond 

the arctic and antarctic Circles. Not removed for 

examination, appears fine. Fold as issued; there may 

be a stabilized separation at the fold, but it does not 

detract. Colors bright.

Canaan.) Hand-colored, 41 x 54cm (approx 16 x 21.25 in.) Lower left

fecit. This map with slightly tilted perspective, north is about 45 

degrees to the right on the compass rose, so palestine is horizontal 

across the map, Egypt is in the upper left. 

Both maps with vignettes by nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), 

who is not as well-known for his religious drawings as for he is 

for landscapes, but was a versatile artist. a prolific dutch artist, 

Berchem often painted in the Italianate style, and became wellknown 

particularly because many of his paintings were reproduced 

as prints. In 1669 the Elzevier publishing house put out a French 

Bible, for which they enlisted popular artists to illustrate a 

frontispiece and maps. The La Sainte Bible appears to have been 

planned at least a decade before its publication, and was to include 

5 maps to illustrate several stories. Berchem worked with Jan 


de visscher (1632-1692) and abraham Blotelingh (1640-1690) as 

engravers of the five maps. He had worked previously with nicolaes 

visscher, so he as clearly familiar with these printing houses. 

The “departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt” has three 

vignettes at the bottom from the life of Moses, with the central 

image of Moses receiving the 10 Commandments (Exod. 20), the 

left image of Moses striking the rock for water (numb. 20.11) and 

gathering the people and taking the rod from the Lord (numb. 

20.9). The cartouche is illustrated, and there are ships (much later 

European style vessels) on the Mediterranean and red Seas. 

The “voyage of St. paul” is oriented with north to the top. There 

are illustrated cartouches and scales at top and bottom center. 

There are 8 vignettes of Biblical scenes on either side of these 

informative panels, plus numerous figures around and between 

each panel. The Berchem panels include: (top) pentacost (acts 2); 

peter and John healing a cripple at the door of the Temple (acts 

3.8); death of ananias (acts 5.5); Stoning of Stephen (acts 7.58); 

(bottom) Conversion of paul (acts 9.4); Elymas struck blind (acts 

13.11); paul and Barnabas Healing the Cripple at Lystra (acts 14.11); 

paul shipwrecked on Malta with the viper attached to his hand (acts 

28.3).

Before magnetic compasses, navigation was by the wind, especially 

in the Mediterranean. There they acquired names from the lands 

from which they blew, or by the deity thought to reside there. 

The multiplicity of names and directions did not result in more 

precise information, however, but rather confusion. So a wind from 

Scandinavia may be “north” or Italy, but northwest of Greece. 

various wind tables were published, some without a compass rose 

in the center. This has one, with a fleur de lis for a north arrow, and 

ties the wind directions with compass directions, since many of the 

old charts (and old mariners) gave directions by the wind. It also 

incorporates degrees of an arc around the perimeter. The early 

wind charts started with four (cardinal) directions, that were then 

divided into 8, then 12 (aristotle), then 16, and eventually, as this 

one illustrates, 32. This chart also gives the names of each direction 

in six languages, including Greek, Latin, French, dutch, Italian, 

and Spanish - the primary maritime powers of the 16th and 17th 

centuries (although some nations had multiple names for winds 

from the same direction). 


Surrounding the chart are 32 windheads, with a large head at each 

cardinal direction. These represent a combination of mythological 

figures and a personification of racial stereotypes as seen by 

Europeans. Thus the north wind is drawn as an older man with 

white hair and beard (nordic), and his wind has droplets of rain or 

ice embedded. The south wind is represented by a blonde cherubic 

figure. The east wind is represented by a dark figure, with sun faces 

in the wind and a sun behind his head. and the west wind has south 

asian characteristics (possibly India or “Siam” - the “Indies”) and 

wears flowers in her hair and blows flowers in the wind. Between 

the large heads are smaller ones, with the next largest being the 

eighth divisions (nW, nE, SW, SE) - the system that eventually 

evolved into that in use up to the present. 

a classic example of European maritime lore in a decorative chart.

Mercator, Gerard (1512-1594). Septentrionalium Terrarum Descriptio 

per Gerardum Mercatorem cum Privilegio. plate marks approx. 14.5 

x 15.5 in. (37 x 39.5cm). Hand-colored, [1595] ca. 1609-1619? nice 

wide margins. This copy from undetermined later French edition of 

Hondius, text description on verso numbered pages 73, 76. 

This is cited as the first printed map of the north pole, depicting 

the belief that the pole was a large magnetic stone (according to 

Mercator’s information from an as-yet unidentified source, nearly 

33 French miles in circumference) with four rivers flowing into it. The 

belief at the time was that all continents are surrounded by water, 

perpetuating the search for any passage, in this case the northwest 

one, to China. 

Mercator was interested in “updating the myths,” however. This 

one incorporated the information of explorers Frobisher and 

davis (“Fretum dauis” and “Fretum Forbisshers” refer to “relying on 

[information from] davis [1585-1587] and Frobisher [1576-1578]”). 


The southern border of the mythical northern continent “pygmei” 

has also been eliminated and “t’nieulant” added to the south, as 

well as adjustments to “nova Zembla” from the earlier state of the 

map. Mercator did identify part of america, but placed California 

way too far north for most Californians - above the arctic Circle. 

Three of the four medallions in the corners contain inset maps of 

Scotland, the Faroe Islands, and the mythical Frisland. 

Mercator was working on his atlas at the time of his death in 1594. It 

was published by his son, rumold, in 1595, and the plates acquired 

by Jodocus Hondius in 1604. Moderate toning. Minor margin tears in 

lower margin not extending into the map; minor insect damage either 

side of center fold. Small chip of paper 2 x 0.5cm missing from top 

margin and a few short tears nearby.

of Mercator’s 1578 ptolemaic map with mythological figures 

in the corners: Zeus (Fire)with thunderbolts, Hera (air) with 

peacock, neptune (Water) with trident, and Gaia (Earth) with 

fruits and vegetables. only the northern part of africa visible, and 

Scandinavia, a small island near where denmark should be. India 

is truncated, but Sri Lanka (labeled Taprobana) is large and in the 

position of the southern part of subcontinent. often found as a

custom bound and trimmed by purchaser. among the doublepage 

engravings are also bird’s-eye plans of athens, rome, and 

Jerusalem. Many pages have decorative cartouches and artistically 

stacked historic coins of the region depicted. The “World” map 

at the beginning only illustrates the “old World,” since that was 

believed at the time to be the only “antiquarian world.” 

Johann david Köhler (1684-1755) was a German historian one of 

whose primary interests focused on coins as historical artifacts, 

as these maps indicate. He also made contributions in the early 

days of library science while serving as librarian at the university at 

altdorf. 

Christoph Weigel (ca 1654-1725) was an engraver, goldsmith and, 

with Johann Köhler, expanded into mapmaking. He and his relation 

Johann worked out of nuremberg during the first part of the 18th 


plate in the final edition of Mercator’s ptolemaic atlas, this appears 

to be separately issued. Not removed from wrapping. Tape (probably 

archival) reinforcement at center on verso is visible through the paper.

(43 x 54cm); ca 1690? The double-hemisphere map has outlined 

and lightly colored political units. Two smaller maps of the north 

and South poles above and below the hemispheres. This is the 

world as the 17th century dutch knew it. California is depicted as an 

island. The east coast of australia is blank. nothing is shown at the 

South pole. The north pole is taking a more modern configuration, 

the geographers having given up the view of the magnetic rocky 

island and four islands surrounding it (see lot 84585). 

around the perimeter are images of the zodiac, not entirely in 

order. In the upper left one sees a ram (aries) being adorned on 

the ground, and a bull (Taurus) charging in and the twins (Gemini) 

in the sky. The lion (Leo) walks toward the putti upper right holding 

a crab (Cancer), with an angelic figure in the sky (virgo). Lower left 

one finds Sagittarius, putti holding scales (Libra) with Scorpio in the 

heavens. In the lower right is a magician/astrologer looking into his 


fire being watched by a water-bearer (aquarius), while putti hold 

ropes around a goat (Capricorn) and other putti hold fish (pisces) in 

the heavens. 

For a century the visscher family was among the top publishers in 

amsterdam’s map trade. The business was begun by Claez Jansz. 

visscher (1587-1652) about 1620 (although he was training and 

engraving before this), and continued by his son nicolaes (1618- 

1679) and his grandson, nicolaes II (1649-1702). after the junior 

nicolaes’ death, his widow Elizabeth (d. 1726) continued publishing 

the maps, putting out several Minor and Major atlases with varying 

numbers of maps, from a couple dozen to over 100. a bit later 

pieter Schenk acquired the plates and continued to publish the 

maps until his death in 1718. Minor chips around border, especially 

upper right, none affecting printed area.

Joseph Kaffsack (1850-1890), born in ratisbon, Germany, studied with Hähnel in 

dresden. His most notable works are public monuments to two Emperors, William I and 

Frederich III, both at Giebichenstein, Germany, and six allegorical figures on the Leipzig 

post office, Leipzig, Germany. He also made many statues for both public and private 

buildings, which is a partial explanation for rarely finding his works for sale.

to go with 55 wonderful hand-colored full-page plates. In 

custom clamshell box, half-leather with marbled paper and 

matching lining to box with gilt German short title on spine. 

Title translates roughly to “Customs and Clothing of the 

Chinese presented in Colorful paintings: by the painter pu- 

Qua in Canton as supplement to Macartney’s and van Braams 

travels.” George Macartney was a British envoy who was sent 

to China 1792-94 to negotiate better trade policies between 

Britain and China, and hoping to establish a permanent 

embassy in Beijing. although unsuccessful at these official 

goals, the mission did return to Europe with information about 

the Chinese, such as that entailed in this volume - customs, 

manners, dress, etc. 

andreas Everardis van Braam Houckgeest got his “sea legs” in 

the dutch navy, but soon left to work for the dutch East India 

Company (voC), arriving in China in 1758. When he heard 

about the British mission, he entreated the dutch government 

to make a similar attempt, since the voC had been trading 

in China for decades. They took his advice, but appointed 

Isaac Titsingh as head of the embassy. van Braam wrote of 

his experiences after his return, published in French, first in 

philadelphia, then paris. Wear to boards, some signatures loose, 

especially plates 6 and 7. Some damage to last two lines of type 

on text page accompanying plate 6. Most plates fine with guards 

intact. Minor foxing and toning.

By registering and bidding in an auction conducted by Cowan’s auctions, Inc. (“Cowan’s”), bidders 

(whether present in person, by telephone, by agent, by written or telephone absentee bid 

instruction, or through a live internet connection) agree to be bound by these terms. These are 

the complete and only terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. Cowan’s 

retains the right to bar any bidder from participating in any auction and to exclude or reject any

1) REGISTRATION. all bidders must register their name, permanent street address (no p.o. 

Boxes), and telephone number prior to the auction. unless known to Cowan’s, all registrants 

are required to present two forms of identification, at least one of which must include a current 

photograph. Bidders may be required to present a valid visa or MasterCard. By registering with 

Cowan’s or submitting an absentee bid form, an individual registrant authorizes Cowan’s to 

obtain a copy of his or her consumer credit report and authorizes Cowan’s, at its sole discretion, 

to use the information contained therein to make business decisions regarding the registrant’s 

participation in the bidding process. 

2) ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS. Bidding on any item, whether in person, by phone, by absentee 

bid or via a live internet auction indicates the bidder’s agreement to be bound by these Terms 

and Conditions for Bidders. any right of bidder under this agreement shall not be assignable and 

shall only be enforceable by the original buyer. The rights and obligations of the parties shall be 

governed by the laws of the state of ohio. all bidders submit to the personal jurisdiction of the

3) TERMS OF SALE. announcements made the day of auction take precedence over any 

previous communication. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot at any time 

before its final sale and to reject any bid for any reason. The highest bidder for each lot 

acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the “buyer”. If any dispute arises as to any bidding, or 

between two or more bidders, at the sole discretion of the auctioneer, the successful bidder will 

be determined or the disputed lot shall be put up again at the last undisputed bid and resold. 

4) BUYER’S PREMIUM. (a) Buyer’s premium for “antique and Modern Firearms” and “the 

World at War” auctions. The auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional 

commission, a premium equal to 15% the Sale price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, 

plus 10% of the amount by which the Sale price exceeds $200,000. 

(b) Buyer’s premium for “decorative art”, “american History”, and “american Indian and Western 

art” and any other specialized auctions. The auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, 

as additional commission, a premium equal to 17 ½% of the Sale price of each Lot up to and 

including $200,000, plus 12 ½% of the amount by which the Sale price exceeds $200,000. 

5) ESTIMATES AND RESERVES. presale estimates are intended to be guides and may or may 

not reflect the ultimate hammer price of a lot. Cowan’s retains the right to change estimates on 

any lot up to time of sale. a reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the seller 

of the lot and Cowan’s. In the case of reserved lots, the seller has authorized Cowan’s to bid on 

seller’s behalf until the reserve price is reached. In no case will the reserve be higher than the 

low presale estimate. Cowan’s standard house reserve on all property at auction is one-half of 

the low estimate. 

6) WARRANTIES AND DISCLAIMERS. Cowan’s makes a limited warranty only to the original 

buyer of record concerning the authenticity of each lot for a period of 14 days after bidder’s 

receipt of the purchased lot. If a buyer is not satisfied that the lot purchased is genuine, 

the buyer may, at his or her own expense, obtain the opinion of two mutually agreed upon 

recognized experts in the field of the disputed lot. If these experts determine that the item is 

not genuine, the buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the rescission of the sale and refund 

of the amount paid for the item. It is specifically understood and agreed that the rescission 

of the sale and refund is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedy which might otherwise 

be available as a matter of law or in equity, and such remedy is conditioned upon the buyer 

returning the property in the same condition as at the time of sale. Cowan’s shall not be liable 

for any incidental or consequential damages. all sales are final, with no returns or refunds 

except as provided in this limited warranty. 

Except as provided in the immediately proceeding paragraph, EvEry LoT IS SoLd “aS IS”, 

without any representations or warranties by Cowan’s or the seller as to merchantability, fitness 

for a particular purpose, condition or value of the property, or the correctness or completeness 

of the catalogue or other description of the property, and no statement, whether written or oral, 

shall be deemed such a representation, warranty or assumption of liability. Cowan’s makes no 

representation or warranty that the buyer of manuscript material, photographs, prints or works 

of art will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights. Cowan’s does not guarantee the working 

order of any clock, watch, electronic or mechanical device. dimensions given in the catalogue 

descriptions may be approximate. 

7) DEFINITIONS OF AUTHORSHIP. 

“By” or “Maker/artist” — in our opinion, the work is by the artist or maker stated 

“attributed to” — in our opinion, the work is probably, but not definitely, by the artist or maker 

stated 

“Signed” or “Marked” — in our opinion, the signature or mark is that of the stated artist or maker 

“Bearing the signature (or mark) of” — in our opinion, the signature or mark is probably, but not 

definitely, that of the artist or maker stated 

“Circle of” — in our opinion, the work is of the period and by an artist or maker closely associated 

with the stated artist or maker 

“School of” — in our opinion, the work is by a pupil or follower of the stated artist or maker 

“Manner of” — in our opinion, the work is of the period and done in the style of the stated artist 

or maker 

“after” — in our opinion, the work is a copy of a work by the stated artist or maker 

8) INSPECTION. Except for on-Line only auctions, all lots are available for inspection prior 

to the auction. Condition reports for most items can be found online at Cowan’s website, www. 

cowans.com, and prospective bidders are encouraged to contact Cowan’s directly for additional 

information regarding the condition of any lot. Cowan’s does not warrant the condition of any 

item. Buyers interested in the condition of an item are encouraged to contact Cowan’s and, to 

the best of our ability, we will document for the prospective bidder the condition status on any 

lot. Condition is always a subjective evaluation and final responsibility rests with the buyer to 

assess the condition of any item sold by Cowan’s. 

ABSENTEE, TELEPHONE AND INTERNET BIDDING 

absentee and telephone bidding is offered as a free service to our customers and prospective 

bidders. Cowan’s shall not be responsible for any errors or failures in executing bids, either 

absentee, telephone or via the internet. 

9) ABSENTEE BIDDING. absentee bids are accepted via mail, fax, email and on Cowan’s 

website. Such bids will be posted with the time and date of arrival, with ties being awarded to the 

earliest bidder. absentee bids that are faxed or emailed to Cowan’s need to be in the office at 

least 2 hours before the sale begins. 


an absentee bidder unknown to Cowan’s may be required to submit a bank letter of credit prior to 

the auction, or, using a credit card, deposit with Cowan’s a fee equaling 30% of the absentee bid. 

all absentee bids are executed competitively by a member of the auction staff. The auction 

staff will try to purchase the lot for the lowest price possible and will bid up to the amount 

designated by the absentee bidder only if necessary. Cowan’s does not accept “buy bids,” or 

absentee bids which have no limit. In the event of a tie bid between a floor and an absentee 

bidder, the floor bid will be honored. 

10) TELEPHONE BIDDING. Bidding live via the telephone is available on a first come, first 

served basis for those lots with a low estimate of $500 or greater. In order for Cowan’s to 

efficiently serve the needs of those who wish to bid by phone, please note the following: 

• To participate in the auction by telephone, potential bidders must complete and sign the 

absentee bid form and check “I WISH To BId By TELEpHonE” for the designated lots. 

potential bidders may also reserve a phone line on Cowan’s website. If faxing or emailing 

requests for phone bidding, they need to be in Cowan’s office 2 hours before the sale begins. 

once the auction begins, requests left on Cowan’s website may not be retrieved by the staff. 

• Telephone bidders are advised to indicate an “insurance bid”, which amount will become an 

absentee bid, pursuant to the absentee bidding process set forth above, if Cowan’s can not 

reach the bidder by telephone for a particular indicated lot. 

• Telephone bidders must disable any caller ID or other call blocking mechanism. 

• Cowan’s sells about 100 lots per hour, so telephone bidders should plan accordingly. Cowan’s 

will attempt to reach each telephone bidder, but Cowan’s is in no way responsible for missed 

calls. 

11) INTERNET BIDDING. Internet bidding is available through iCowans on our website; 

additionally, Cowan’s may post certain auctions on Liveauctioneers.com. There may be terms 

which apply to internet bids that should be reviewed online at the time of sale. Cowan’s is 

not responsible for any failure to execute a bid and shall have no liability to any bidder for any 

technical or other failure associated with an internet auction. 

12) BIDDING INCREMENTS. The following increments are used at the auction. absentee bids 

must fall within these increments. Cowan’s will automatically reduce any absentee bid to the 

closest increment if the bid falls outside the published range of increments.

Cowan’s reserves the right to modify increments at any time during the auction. 

AFTER THE AUCTION 

13) BUYER’S RESPONSIBILITY. upon the fall of the hammer, title to the offered lot shall 

pass to the buyer and the buyer immediately (a) assumes full risk and responsibility for the 

lot, including liability for loss or damage and (b) is liable for payment of the purchase price (as 

defined below) to Cowan’s. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ask specific questions on condition 

related concerns prior to the auction. Cowan’s will not rescind sales with buyers that have 

disputes regarding firearm’s bore condition. 

14) PURCHASE PRICE AND PAYMENT. The discounted “purchase price” for each lot shall 

equal the hammer price, buyer’s premium, sales tax and, if applicable, all packing, handling, 

insurance and shipping costs. payment may be made with cash, personal or traveler’s check, 

visa, MasterCard or paypal. Cowan’s reserves the right to hold a purchased lot until a check has 

cleared. 

PLEASE NOTE: A convenience charge of 2% will be reflected in the final purchase price 

(non-discounted) for the use of Visa, Mastercard or Paypal. 

Buyers who are present at the auction must pay the full purchase price at the time of the sale. 

Buyers who bid by telephone or who are absentee bidders will be invoiced within 5 days after 

the close of the auction and must pay the full purchase price for each purchased lot within 

14 days after the date of the auction. By signing the absentee bid form or placing a bid by 

telephone, an absentee bidder authorizes Cowan’s to charge the purchase price for each lot for 

which such bidder is the successful bidder to the credit card number provided by telephone or 

on the absentee bid form, unless payment in full or alternative payment instruction is received 

within 14 days after the date of the auction. no property will be released by Cowan’s unless the 

purchase price has been paid in full. 

Institutional billing may be available, and should be arranged prior to the auction. 

Cowan’s may impose late charges of 1.5% per month (or the highest interest rate allowed) 

on any amount owed to Cowan’s that remains unpaid after 30 days. Buyer shall be liable for 

any collection costs or attorney’s fees incurred by Cowan’s to collect payment, to the extent 

permitted by law. 

15) SALES TAX. Buyers are required to pay any applicable state and local sales tax. 

16) SHIPPING. at the request of the buyer, Cowan’s will authorize the shipment of purchased 

items through our agent, Wrap-it postal, LLC. Wrap-it postal operates independently in Cowan’s 

facility and usually ships within two weeks after payment has been received. Shipment is 

generally made via upS or Fed-Ex Ground. unless buyer gives special instructions, the shipping 

method shall be at the sole discretion of Wrap-it postal. Cowan’s is in no way responsible for 

the acts or omissions of independent handlers, packers or shippers of purchased items or for 

any loss, damage or delay from the packing or shipping of any property. 

ADVICE TO INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Cowan’s will not ship any package containing a firearm 

to any location other than within the united States. Buyers outside the united States must make 

their own shipping arrangements taking full risk for the transportation of any firearm. 

17) SHIPPING CHARGES. Buyers are required to pay for all packing, shipping and insurance 

charges. overseas duty charges are the responsibility of the successful bidder. Be aware that for 

larger and/or valuable items, shipping charges can be substantial. 

18) REMOVAL AND STORAGE OF PROPERTY. If purchased property has not been removed, 

or Cowan’s has not received shipping instructions within 21 days after the auction date, a $10 per 

item per day storage fee may be charged to the buyer. 

19) CANCELLATION OF SALE. If purchased property remains in the custody of Cowan’s for 

a period of 60 days following the auction, Cowan’s may, at its option, cancel the sale, retaining 

as liquidated damages any payments made by the buyer, or resell the property at auction or by 

any other commercially reasonable means, for the account and at the risk of the buyer, and in 

such event, buyer shall be liable for the payment of all deficiencies plus all of Cowan’s costs, 

including but not limited to storage and costs of both sales. This right of cancellation is in 

addition to any and all other remedies available to Cowan’s.
