Deciding which watch to buy is a <strong>com</strong>plex<br />
recipe of aesthetics, functionality and taste.<br />
Much of the decision is a reflection of yourself,<br />
so in this rough guide we will deal with two<br />
of the main functional differences between<br />
watches; the type of movement and water<br />
resistance.<br />
A watch will be powered by either a<br />
mechanical (1) or quartz (2) movement.<br />
Mechanical<br />
A mechanical watch uses the energy from a wound spring, and keeps time through the highly<br />
regulated release of that energy through a set of gears (the wheel train) and an escapement.<br />
Mechanical watches are usually self winding through an oscillating weight but can be hand<br />
wound also. It uses purely mechanical <strong>com</strong>ponents to keep time and can typically run for<br />
about 40 hours on one full wind.
