Sunglasses Lens Material
Polycarbonate lenses are ultra-lightweight and virtually shatterproof providing safety and comfort.
Polycarbonate lenses are 20 times more impact resistant than glass lenses and one third the weight and
provide protection from harmful UV rays.
Glass lenses provide excellent optical quality and the most scratch-resistant surface. Most premium glass
lenses are made from distortion-free, borosilicate optical glass and offer the highest level of visual acuity
available today.
Plastic lenses are a less expensive option for lens material. They are half the weight of glass lenses, however
the lens surface is softer and easier to scratch.
Sunglasses Lens Options
Non-polarised tinted are ideal for every day, all-purpose wear. Tinting of the lens creates true colour definition
while fighting harsh glare. Tints are available in almost any colour.
Polarised sunglasses are best for activities around water or in direct sunlight. The polarised film of the lenses
is sandwiched between two halves of the lens and cannot peel or scratch off. The polarised film acts like a
Venetian blind set at a specific angle to filter the chaotic light waves that cause glare, reducing glare and eye
fatigue (see diagram opposite).
Mirror sunglasses offer protection when you are in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Activities like boating,
sunning and people of different professions like construction workers or police officers can benefit from mirrored sunglasses.
Photochromic sunglasses have lenses that change lighter and darker depending on the level of UV light. light
adjusting photochromic sunglasses are a great feature for changing outdoor sun conditions.
Anti-reflective coatings are specifically engineered to eliminate annoying back glare and double images. When
you see someone on TV wearing glasses and can see the reflection from the cameras in front and glare reflecting
off of the lenses, they do not have anti-reflective coating for eyeglasses, most premium sunglasses brands do.
Children need sunglasses, too.
Children need protection from UV radiation and glare, so take care when buying sunglasses for them. Forget
about those flimsy little play sunglasses - get them something that will protect their eyes.
Don’t forget!
Shopping for sunglasses is fun, inexpensive and reflects your sense of style. Try on different brands, shapes and
frame materials to see what looks and feels best on your face.
