HOW MANY HOURS SHOULD I TAKE?<br />

How many hours can I take <strong>at</strong><br />

once?<br />

You are permitted to register each term<br />

for the credit hours listed below:<br />

Undergradu<strong>at</strong>e Students<br />

Fall 21 credit hours<br />

Spring 24 credit hours (Combined terms), or<br />

21 for Spring, or 6 for Wintermester.<br />

Summer 15 credit hours (Combined terms), or<br />

9 for Summer, or 6 for Maymester.<br />

Gradu<strong>at</strong>e & Doctoral Students<br />

Fall 15 credit hours<br />

Spring 18 credit hours, including Wintermester<br />

Summer 9 credit hours<br />

How many hours is considered<br />

full-time?<br />

UTEP uses the following c<strong>at</strong>egories for<br />

enrollment verifi c<strong>at</strong>ion to fi nancial aid,<br />

loan agencies, insurance companies,<br />

scholarships, etc… Students are encouraged<br />

to enroll in the appropri<strong>at</strong>e number<br />

<strong>of</strong> credit hours as required by applicable<br />

agencies or programs. UTEP recommends<br />

th<strong>at</strong> VA students consult with the<br />

campus Veterans Affairs Offi ce. Those<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ing in the Career and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Development Services Cooper<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Program and are enrolled<br />

only in a CO-OP course, will be classifi<br />

ed as full time for the semester/term.<br />

If you are a gradu<strong>at</strong>e or doctoral student,<br />

the full time classifi c<strong>at</strong>ion applies<br />

to criteria for employment as teaching<br />

and research assistants and for receipt <strong>of</strong><br />

stipends and scholarships. It represents a<br />

minimum standard and individual programs<br />

may require students to enroll in<br />

more hours to qualify for support.<br />

Master’s degree students who have<br />

completed all requirements for the degree<br />

except the second semester <strong>of</strong> the master’s<br />

thesis (5399) and who were full time<br />

students in the immedi<strong>at</strong>ely preceding fall<br />

or spring semester are classifi ed by the<br />

Gradu<strong>at</strong>e School as full time if enrolled in<br />

3 hours <strong>of</strong> thesis. This applies to a single<br />

fi nal semester only.<br />

Doctoral degree students who have<br />

completed all requirements for the degree<br />

except the dissert<strong>at</strong>ion (6398/6399<br />

or 6320/6321) and who were full time<br />

students in the immedi<strong>at</strong>ely preceding fall<br />

or spring semester are classifi ed by the<br />

Gradu<strong>at</strong>e School as full time in enrolled in<br />

3 hours <strong>of</strong> dissert<strong>at</strong>ion. This applies to two<br />

fi nal semesters <strong>of</strong> dissert<strong>at</strong>ion work only.<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> do I do if I want to enroll in<br />

more than the maximum hours<br />

allowed?<br />

Students who wish to take an overload<br />

must obtain prior authoriz<strong>at</strong>ion. Undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

students should acquire approval<br />

from their academic dean. Gradu<strong>at</strong>e and<br />

doctoral students need approval from<br />

the Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Student Services Offi ce. A<br />

Course Waiver Form must be submitted to<br />

the Registr<strong>at</strong>ion and Records Offi ce.<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> if I can’t register for the<br />

number <strong>of</strong> hours shown above?<br />

Course load conditions can be imposed<br />

by an advisor or dean in accordance with<br />

standards <strong>of</strong> Academic Performance.<br />

To comply with federal and/or st<strong>at</strong>e st<strong>at</strong>utes,<br />

disclosure <strong>of</strong> your SSN is required <strong>of</strong> all<br />

students (except those intern<strong>at</strong>ional students<br />

with out one) & UTEP employees.<br />

If you are asked to disclose your SSN to<br />

UTEP, you will be notifi ed <strong>of</strong> the st<strong>at</strong>utory<br />

authority under which your SSN is being<br />

solicited.<br />

Disclosure <strong>of</strong> your SSN is required for UTEP<br />

to report, calcul<strong>at</strong>e and track the following:<br />

• Providing enrollment inform<strong>at</strong>ion to<br />

St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>Texas</strong><br />

• Accounting for Federal Financial Aid<br />

awards to UTEP students as required<br />

by the Department <strong>of</strong> Educ<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

st<strong>at</strong>e agencies<br />

• Reporting tuition and fee payments by<br />

students to comply with the Internal<br />

Revenue Service tax credit available<br />

under the Tax Relief Act <strong>of</strong> 1997; and<br />

• Processing employment and reporting<br />

compens<strong>at</strong>ion to the Internal Revenue<br />

Service, Social Security Administr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

(SSA), and other federal or st<strong>at</strong>e<br />

agencies.<br />

• Further disclosure <strong>of</strong> your SSN will be<br />

governed by the <strong>Texas</strong> Public Inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Act, <strong>Texas</strong> Government Code,<br />

Section 552.001 et.seq.<br />

In an effort to protect the confi dentiality <strong>of</strong><br />

your Social Security Number (SSN) and<br />

deter identity theft on campus, The <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>El</strong> <strong>Paso</strong> (UTEP) assigns you a<br />

unique UTEP Identifi c<strong>at</strong>ion Number. This<br />

unique ID number is your key to all <strong>of</strong>fi cial<br />

academic and business transactions on<br />

campus. It will also grant you access to valuable<br />

campus resources and services. If you<br />

have a student ID number th<strong>at</strong> begins with<br />

a D00 or @00, those numbers have been<br />

replaced with your assigned UTEP Identifi c<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
