Celebrating 75 Years 

Cobham’s heritage goes back to 1934 when Sir Alan Cobham, an 

innovative aviation pioneer, worked tirelessly to make flying popular, 

with his own personal dream that “one day there would be a landing 

ground in every major town”. Seventy five years later, with airports 

commonplace, the pioneering spirit continues with customers and 

partners established in more than 100 countries. 

The Cobham Brand 

In 2009, the Company completed its transition to a single, unified 

Cobham brand. Each business unit now trades or does business 

under the name of the strategic business unit to which it belongs.

Cobham in the News 

Cobham was named 10th Most Admired Company in the UK in 

Management Today Magazine’s annual survey in December 

2009. The position was a particular honour, conferred through 

a poll of 200 peer companies in British industry. 

In April 2010 two UK based Cobham businesses won Queen’s 

Awards for Enterprise, the most prestigious business award 

in Britain. Cobham’s surveillance arm won in the Innovation 

category, for development of a video transmission system 

that is increasing the range at which bomb disposal teams in 

Afghanistan and Iraq can view feed from their bomb disposal 

robots. The Antenna Systems business won an Export category 

award for significant export increases over the past five years.

Cobham in the News 

In June 2010 Cobham appeared at Number 35 on the US based 

Defense News Top 100 Defense Companies list, up from 43 in 

2009. 

In June 2010 Cobham’s Technical Services business arm 

was a finalist in the Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert 

Award, bestowed for examples of engineering that have 

achieved commercial success while also providing benefit 

to the community. The award process recognised Cobham’s 

development of the Minehound mine detector, which 

streamlines mine clearing operations by drastically reducing 

false alarms. 

Cobham’s Minehound mine detection unit was a finalist in the Royal Academy of Engineering 

MacRobert Award in 2010.

The Group provides life support, avionics, C4ISR and

Strike Fighter to Boeing B787, Sikorsky and Eurocopter 

helicopters and the Global Hawk UAV.

technologies are aboard manned space vehicles,

In Australia, three Cobham radio telescopes are being sited to act as one single telescope the size of the entire 

country. 

The International Space Station contains more than 250 Cobham components and sub systems. 

The Group’s antennas are spaced around the Delta IV satellite launch vehicle, ensuring unbroken communication 

with the ground station as the vehicle rolls in flight. 

Every US astronaut has breathed through Cobham oxygen regulators. 

The Group’s rotary joints, antennas and pyrotechnic devices have proven themselves on missions to Mars, often in 

mission-critical functions such as communications and equipment deployment.

CAPABILITIES 

Cobham oxygen regulators went in to space on the US Mercury programme in the 1960s and have served every US 

astronaut since. The Group’s communications, life support and pyrotechnic products are now prevalent on US and 

European launch vehicles, satellites and ground stations and even the Mars Rover.

Cobham has integrated mission equipment on 25 aircraft types including the F-15E Strike Eagle and Saab Gripen. 

Cobham provides 95% of the world’s probe and drogue air-to-air refuelling systems. 

The F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter depends on more than 100 Cobham microwave modules in its radar, 

communications and defensive suites. 

Every US Navy tactical fighter carries the Group’s communications antennas. 

Cobham communications antennas are in service on more than 25,000 aircraft of 180 types, across 40 countries.

CAPABILITIES 

From helicopters to fighter jets and transports, Cobham products are in service around the world, enhancing safety and 

significantly reducing pilot workload for civil and military crews.

CAPABILITIES 

Cobham’s On Board Oxygen Generation System frees Joint Strike Fighter pilots from the limitations of bottled 

oxygen, with the potential to increase endurance and range while reducing line maintenance. 

As the world leader in probe and drogue air-to-air refuelling, Cobham is also providing the F-35’s retractable 

refuelling probe, which stows away completely to preserve the aircraft’s stealth performance. 

The Group has a range of technologies on the F-35, including infrared countermeasure cryogenic cooling system, 

nitrogen monitor, pneumatic bomb release actuator and pressure vessels. 

The F-35’s advanced radar and communications systems also incorporate Cobham integrated microwave 

assemblies, slip ring assemblies, radiating elements and filters. 

Cobham systems will be part of every F-35 pilot’s survival equipment, from their harness restraints to the lifejacket 

auto-inflation system that will protect an unconscious pilot from drowning after an overwater ejection.

Every Indian Navy vessel capable of helicopter operations is equipped with Cobham’s I-Band transmitter, for 

helicopter identification and traffic control. 

The US Sikorsky CH-53K heavy lift helicopter will incorporate Cobham composite bonded components in its main 

rotor. 

Cobham electronic slip rings, which allow data and power to pass between rotating and stationary components, are 

in service on Eurocopter helicopters. 

US Coastguard rescue helicopters are equipped with Cobham multi-band radios that allow the crew to 

communicate with other agencies in the air, at sea and on land. 

Every Eurocopter helicopter flies with Cobham antennas.

Cobham is one of the world’s best known providers of oxygen regulation equipment for military aircraft. 

Cobham has long been a trusted supplier of intercom systems for military and civil transport aircraft. 

Through Cobham’s Satcom systems, Airbus A400M crews will communicate voice and data, and receive in-flight 

plan updates and weather briefings. 

The distinctive nose radome of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules is made by Cobham. 

Cobham’s OnBoard Inert Gas Generation System (OBIGGS) protects Boeing C-17s.

Cobham’s synthetic vision Electronic Flight Instrument System has been approved for installation on more than 

740 models of both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. 

The Group’s Radio Audio Interface Management System gives Airbus A380 pilots access to several communication 

and navigation radios through a single interface and has also been selected for the A350 XWB. 

Cobham’s HeliSAS Stability Augmentation System automatically returns helicopters to straight and level flight 

without input from the pilot. 

The Group’s Satcom antennas are part of the communications suite on the Boeing B787 Dreamliner and B747-8 

freighter. 

Cobham antennas are fitted to every Airbus and Bombardier aircraft.

Cobham won a 2010 Queen’s Award for Industry for development of video transmission technology used in bomb

US Unmanned Ground Vehicles use Cobham video transmission technology. 

In the UK, Cobham is contracted to maintain Royal Air Force MQ-9 Predator UAVs in service. 

The Northrop Grumman Global Hawk uses Cobham components and subsystems in its ground based antenna 

terminal, radar and communications systems. 

Cobham was a pioneer in unmanned systems, converting Royal Air Force fighter jets to remote piloted drones in 

the 1950s and later manufacturing the Phoenix UAV, which served with British Forces in the Balkans in the 1990s.

Cobham’s communications, surveillance, air-to-air refuelling and weapons delivery systems enhance the performance of 

many of the world’s unmanned systems. From UGVs to Stealthy UCAVs and surveillance UAVs, Cobham systems are at the 

heart of vehicles, data transfer systems and ground stations.

Cobham vehicle mounted Electronic Warfare antennas are proving vital against Improvised Explosive Devices 

(IEDs) in Afghanistan and Iraq. 

Cobham Satcom On-The-Move vehicle systems allow transmission of voice, data and even video while driving at 

speeds of up to 95 mph. 

Cobham’s Microclimate Cooling Unit provides direct cooling for more than 6000 armoured vehicle personnel, 

effectively tripling their endurance in ambient temperatures of up to 145 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Cobham has provided more than 30,000 vehicle antenna systems to the US military. 

More than 125,000 Cobham vehicle intercom systems are in service with 18 armed forces around the world.

helmet-mounted cameras in SkiCross racing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics to live cockpit video from

Major events such as the Academy Awards Oscars ceremony and the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix have used 

Cobham surveillance technology to monitor approaches to the venues.

Cobham’s video compression and transmission technology is increasing safety for bomb disposal units in
