I would like to thank you for donating to the Light on the Hill Society.
Words do little to describe my gratitude for your generosity. As we all
know funding an education is expensive, but as Derek Bok said, “If you
think education is expensive, try ignorance.” In other words, though it
may be expensive, an education is an irreplaceable necessity; therefore,
thank you for your willingness to sew a seed in mine.
Even though I worked tirelessly in high school in hopes of being able to
assist my parents with my education, I only received a small amount of
financial assistance. For this reason, I was overjoyed to learn that I had
been chosen for the Light on the Hill Peppers Scholarship. Receiving
this scholarship is helping me fund my education at UNC for the next
four years and is taking some of the financial burden off of my parents.
I believe the Light on the Hill Society attracts some of the brightest
African-American students, because it recognizes their talents and
rewards them for their hard work. At UNC, where there are so many
gifted students, being singled out and recognized as a recipient for this
award creates a personal and sincere appreciation for the Light on the
Hill Society. Thanking you again from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you so much for the Light on the Hill Scholarship which will
help me attend The University of North Carolina. Before I received
this award, I was a little disappointed and sure that I wanted Carolina
more than Carolina wanted me. I worked very hard to go above and
beyond in high school. I turned down several full-tuition scholarships
from other universities to attend UNC. Despite my efforts, I hadn’t
received any scholarship money from Carolina by the end of May. I
was really disappointed, but I knew that attending Carolina was my
goal and that regardless of the obstacles it was still the place for me.
When I received the call from the selection committee, I finally felt
like someone at Carolina saw how much I wanted to be there and
was willing to help make it happen. This scholarship will help me to
develop into a successful black woman and allow me to fulfill many of
my personal and professional goals in life. The Light on the Hill Society
definitely made me feel wanted by Carolina and I’m sure that support
from the scholarship will produce that same feeling in other African-
American students who choose to attend Carolina. My wish is that
support for the LOTH scholarship will increase so that more of the best
African-American students can attend UNC and enjoy the same feeling
of acceptance that I experienced when I received this award. Thank you
for believing in me, and showing proof of that belief, by giving me this
outstanding scholarship. It offers more than monetary support as it
helps to validate my belief that hard work and perseverance do not go
unnoticed and for that I will be forever grateful.
scholars’ words of appreciation
I would like to thank you for honoring me with this scholarship. It
will definitely be useful as I pursue my education at UNC. I have been
struggling to find scholarships to help me pay for college and I was
quite excited when I discovered I had received this one. The
Light on the Hill Scholarship is such an honor to receive and I am
quite grateful for its acknowledgement. This scholarship will help
tremendously in bringing in African-American students to UNC where
they can continue to be challenged at one of the best colleges in the
nation. I am proud to receive this recognition, and I am now even more
excited to finally call myself a Tar Heel.
I am honored to be a recipient of the Light on the Hill Society Scholarship.
I grew up in a rural community where there were not many
extracurricular or scholarship opportunities. With this scholarship, I
will finally have the chance to take advantage of the academic resources
that I have access to as a UNC student.
My acceptance and enrollment into UNC begins the first stage of my
journey into the medical profession. I am interested in conducting
research in health disparities at the local level and internationally. As a
UNC student, I plan to take advantage of every available opportunity
while benefiting from the diverse and rigorous academic environment
as a scholar, leader, and public servant.
Thanks to the donations from generous organizations such as yours, my
goals are now within reach, and many other hard working African-
American students will have the opportunity to let their “light shine”
in Chapel Hill, regardless of the cost. I am extremely grateful for your
generosity, because without you, this opportunity would not have been
possible. I will use your gift wisely and be a positive representative of
the UNC community during these next four years.
Thank you so much for being a supporter of such a prestigious and
remarkable scholarship. I am truly honored to be given the title of
2011 Light on the Hill Scholar. I truly appreciate your gifts, as they
will be helpful to me in taking care of some of the many expenses that
come along with the college experience. Thank you for allowing me
the chance to both represent an outstanding scholarship and have the
honor of being able to help my parents with paying for college necessities.
It is inevitable that the support that you all have given to the Light
on the Hill Society will play the supreme role of attracting the interest
of many of the most punctilious, intelligent, and talented young
African-American students across the country to this amazing University.
Once again, I am thankful for the opportunity to be associated
with an organization of driven, successful and giving African-Americans
from the unmatchable University of North Carolina. Your gifts will be
helpful in my effort to prosper in all aspects of life.
