Dear Black Alumni Reunion Participants,
On behalf of Chapel Hill and Orange County, it gives me great pleasure to welcome attendees of
the 2011 Black Alumni Reunion back to Chapel Hill. As an alumna of UNC, I’m thrilled to be
part of the homecoming reunion this year because Chapel Hill and BAR, are so intimately connected
by history and philosophy.
Chapel Hill, after all, is where the BAR was born, and that was no accident. The cultural and intellectual
affinities of this town provided a fertile soil for that seed to grow. As Walter Faison ’82 wrote
welcoming the attendees of a previous year’s reunion, “UNC is our rightful place, and we are challenged
to step up and claim it. The UNC Black Pioneers gave sweat and tears so that we could have
the opportunities at the University that we relish today. Before the Black Pioneers were the “Unsung
Founders,” the men and women of color — enslaved and free — who helped build the Carolina that
we all cherish and hold dear.”
As a member of the board of directors for the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau, rest assured
that your stay here will be pleasant, and that the Visitors Bureau will do everything it can to make
this reunion memorable for all of you. We are pleased to have this opportunity to welcome you back
home.
Sincerely,
greetings
