Help students
start strong
at Carolina with a
Summer Bridge
experience
S ince 1980, Summer Bridge has provided nearly 1,800 Carolina students
with an introduction to college life and academic expectations. This
seven-week residential program gives incoming students who may come
from small or rural high schools—many without AP or college-preparatory
courses—the opportunity to begin their first semester with college credit.
Other students may have access to such courses, but are the first in their
family to attend college. By participating in Summer Bridge, they begin college
with academic credit hours in English, math and sometimes chemistry,
knowledge about the resources available to them, and tools for
successful academic strategies. They are ready to be Tar Heels.
The Summer Bridge Program in the College of Arts and Sciences seeks private support to:
• Increase the number of students enrolled in Summer Bridge each year, from 60 in 2010 to
more than 100. More than 350 students were invited to apply to Summer Bridge in 2011.
The demand for Summer Bridge far exceeds available funding.
• Provide financial resources to ensure that students graduate on time and gain the most from
their Carolina experience.
• Honor the service of Carolyn. C. Cannon, who retired in 2010 as associate dean and director
for academic advising, and whose service to Carolina included 11 years as director of Summer
Bridge from 1987 to 1998.
• Honor other outstanding Summer Bridge directors with gifts to support the program.
