Preface The work presented in this thesis has been carried out in the School of Chemistry at the National university of Ireland Galway during the years 2006-2009. Figures and tables not referenced throughout the text represent diagrams or data produced during this thesis. I would like to thank my supervisor Dr. Alan Ryder for his support and encour- agement over the course of this research.
