g. The storage area should be inaccessible to animals, insects and birds.<br />
h. There should be good lighting and adequate ventilation.<br />
i. The storage area should not be situated in the proximity of fresh food stores or<br />
food preparation areas.<br />
). A supply of cleaning equipment, protective clothing, and waste bags or<br />
containers should be located conveniently close to the storage area.<br />
k. Floors, waHs, and ceilings of the storage area must be kept clean in<br />
accordance to established procedures, which at a minimum should include<br />
daily cleaning of floors,<br />
I. Biodegradable general and hazardous waste should not be stored longer than<br />
2 days to minimize microbial growth, putrefaction, and odors. If the waste must<br />
be stored longer than 2 days, application of treatment like chemical disinfection<br />
or refrigeration at 4oC or lower is recommended.<br />
SECTION 15. Collection and Transport of the Wastes. Medical and toxic waste<br />
collection practices should be designed to achieve an efficient movement of waste from<br />
points of generation to storage or treatment while minimizing the risk to personnel.<br />
Suggested collection frequency on room to room basis is once every shift or as<br />
often as necessary Time of collection regardless of category should be at the start of<br />
every shift.<br />
15.1. On-site Collection. Waste should not be allowed to accumulate at the<br />
point of production. A program for their collection and transportation should<br />
be established as part of the health care waste management plan of every<br />
establishment and laboratories Nursing and other clinical staff should<br />
ensure that waste bags are tightly closed or sealed when they are about<br />
three-quarters full. Light-gauge bags can be closed by tying the neck, but<br />
heavier gauge bags probably require plastic sealing tag of the serf-locking<br />
type. Bags should not be closed by stapling. Sealed sharp containers<br />
should not be placed in a labeled, yellow infectious health care waste bag.<br />
SECTIOH 16. Procedures to be Followed by Personnel who directly Involved<br />
in waste handling and collection. Personnel who are in charge of handling and<br />
collecting toxic, hazardous and healthcare wastes shall follow the following<br />
recommendations:
