SECTION 24. Design of the Collection Vehicle. The design of the collection<br />
vehicle must conform to the following.<br />
a. The body of the vehicle should be of suitable size commensurate with the<br />
design of the vehicle.<br />
b. The vehicle should have totally enclosed car body with the driver seat<br />
separated from the loader to prevent coming into contact with the waste in the<br />
event of coHision/accident<br />
c. There should be a suitable system for securing the load during transport.<br />
d. The vehicle should be easy to clean and the internal surface of the body<br />
should be smooth enough that allows it to be steam cleaned and with ail<br />
comers/angles rounded. The vehicle should be cleaned at the end of each<br />
working day and in the event of any spillage.<br />
e. The vehicle should be marked with the name and address of the waste carrier.<br />
f The international hazard sign should be displayed on the vehicle or container,<br />
as well as the emergency telephone number<br />
g. Empty plastic bags, suitable protective clothing, cleaning equipment, tools, and<br />
disinfectant, together with special kits for dealing with liquid spills, should be<br />
carried in a separate compartment in the vehicle.<br />
SECTION 25. Routing. Hazardous, toxic and medical waste should be transported<br />
through the quickest or shortest possible route and should be planned before the trip<br />
begins. After departure from the source, every effort should be made to avoid further<br />
handling. If handling cannot be avoided, it should be pre-arranged and take place in<br />
adequately designed and authorized premises. Handling requirements can be specified in<br />
the contract established between the waste generator and the transporter<br />
An efficient and effective collection system route should consider the following:<br />
a. Collection schedule either by route or zone<br />
b. Assignment of personnel responsible for the zone or area<br />
c. Logical planning of the route (should avoid passing the collected package of<br />
waste on congested area)
