brackets ([ ]) Surround an optional item-that is, an item that you<br />

do not need to include for the command to execute.<br />

ellipses ( ... ) Follow an argument that may be repeated any<br />

number of times.<br />

For example, the command to list the contents of a directory (Is) is<br />

followed below by its possible flag options and the optional argument<br />

names.<br />

Is [-R] [-a] [-d] [-C] [-x] [-m] [-1] [-L]<br />

[-n] [-0] [-g] [-r] [-t] [-u] [-c] [-p] [-F]<br />

[-b] [-q] [-i] [-s] [names]<br />

Is -a /users<br />

to list all entries of the directory /users, where<br />

1 s Represents the command name<br />

-a Indicates that all entries of the directory be listed<br />

/users Names which directory is to be listed<br />

cmd(sect)<br />

where cmd is the name of the command, file, or other facility; sect is<br />

the section number where the entry resides.<br />

in AIUX System Administrator's <strong>Reference</strong>.<br />

D Commands followed by section numbers (1), (1C), (lG), (1N), and<br />

(6) are listed in AIUX Command <strong>Reference</strong>.<br />
