MAY 18 TUESDAY A SPRING PLAY 6 PM, U-SU THEATRE 1ST FLOOR, UNIVERSITY-STUDENT UNOIN Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to join us for the special CSI production of “Judgment Day” and “In Hindsight,” two plays written by, directed by, and starring Cal State L.A. students! JUDGMENT DAY: This story begins at the end of time. The great horrors that have plagued humanity for thousands and thousands of years are finally put on trial for their crimes. To some, this is known as Judgment Day. IN HINDSIGHT Struggling graduate student Julian Cavanaugh must find the perfect thesis topic, or face expulsion from his program. Will he manage brilliance at the 11th hour? Or will he crash and burn (in hilarious fashion) like so many before him? Find out in this comedy of failure. Space is limited. HOME, BELONGING, AND MULTIPLICITOUS SUBJECTIVITY 3:15 PM, San Gabriel Room 3rd floor, University-Student Union Professor Mariana Ortega, Professor and Shula Chair in Philosophy at John Carroll University, specializes in Latina Feminism, U.S. Third-World Feminism, Race Theory, and Contemporary Continental Philosophy. She discusses the notion of “home” in terms of a politics of location, a notion of belonging that accompanies such a politics, and a view of multiplicitous subjectivity. Additionally, she introduces “hometactics” that can provide some positive aspects of “home” while avoiding its restrictive, exclusive elements. WHAT ABOUT RACE? 2ND ANNUAL AREA AND ETHNIC STUDIES FORUM 4:30 PM, U-SU Theatre 1st Floor, University-Student Union Join us for a conversation with Dr. Yolanda Moses, the distinguished director of “Race: Are We So Different?” a national public education project, sponsored by the American Anthropology Association that is traveling around the nation and was recently exhibited at the California Science Center, Los Angeles. Moses served as Past President of City College of New York (CUNY), President of the American Association for Higher Education at George Washington University, and Professor of Anthropology at CUNY Graduate University. 6:15 PM, U-SU THEATRE 1ST FLOOR, UNIVERSITY-STUDENT UNION 24 MONDAY 3:15 PM, LOS ANGELES ROOM A 3RD FLOOR, UNIVERSITY-STUDENT UNION RED CARD: SOCCER AND RACISM This award-winning documentary about racism in Ecuador tells the story of Afro-Ecuadorian soccer player, Agustin “El Tin” Delgado, arguably the best soccer player in the Ecuadorian national team, and whose participation on the team exposes the deep racial divide in this multiracial country. Directed by Rodolfo Muñoz, 2007, 93 minutes. VISIBLE LIVES: A TRIBUTE TO E. LYNN HARRIS Join us as bestselling authors Terrance Dean, Stanley Bennett Clay and James Earl Hardy present their stories written for Visible Lives, a new book in honor of the E. Lynn Harris. Harris, a trailblazing author who died in July 2009, and is credited for sparking the emergence of black gay literature into mainstream reading lists in the 1990s and 2000s. The University Bookstore will have copies of the books for sale before and during the event.

You can enter one piece of work into each of the following categories: sketching/drawing, painting, 3D art/sculpture, and photography. The winners, chosen by the students, faculty and staff of Cal State L.A., will be revealed on Wednesday, May 26, and will win cash prizes! Each submission should include a title and a very brief description. Entries must be received by May 24th at 6 pm. S.T.A.R.S. Do you often think about giving back to your community? The S.T.A.R.S. Mentoring Program may be a great way to connect with a new 1st year or transfer student. This session will provide you with an overview of the program’s goals and objectives, the role of a mentor, and opportunities to sign up for the upcoming academic year. Counseling and Psychological Services, this week’s Sisterhood Circle centers on women’s dating preferences regarding various ethnic groups, with some focus on the perception of Asian Americans and dating. JUNE 1 TUESDAY PAN-AFRICAN STUDIES FORUM 6 PM – 9 PM, Los Angeles Room 3rd Floor, University-Student Union Students and scholars from the Cal State L.A.’s Department of Pan-African Studies, Pan Afrikan Student Collective, and Pan African Student Resource Center present their current research on topics about and of interest to the Pan African community on campus and abroad. Prolific actor, pan-Africanist and activist, Isaiah Washington, serves as keynote speaker, and discusses Sierra Leone and his own journey and ancestry within the context of a Black world that is resdiscovering the power of pan- Africanism in this time of crisis. 2WEDNESDAY CSI NIGHT @ THE MOVIES 7 PM, U-SU THEATRE 1ST FLOOR, UNIVERSITY-STUDENT UNION CSI brings the hit movies directly to you!
