The Oden: Powerful and efficient The Oden passes at full speed close to the passenger steamer the Birger Jarl, which is stuck in the ice. I n the 1950’s a new breed of icebreakers was introduced in the Baltic Sea. The Finnish Voima was the first of them. She was delivered by Wärtsilä’s Helsinki shipyard and saw action for the first time in the winter of 1954. She immediately proved to be of a successful design. The design was followed up with three sister vessels for the Soviet Union. Also Sweden had plans for ordering a new and powerful icebreaker. Wärtsilä offered a slightly modified version of the Voima, which fulfilled all the Swedish specifications. The fifth vessel of the Voima class was thereafter ordered by Sweden. Named Oden, the Swedish icebreaker became the last of the quintet and was handed over in November, 1957. She had a displacement of 5,000 tons and a beam of 19.4 m, which was adequate for breaking a wide enough channel for most of the merchant vessels of those days. The draft was large, between 6.5 and 7 m, thus making her less suitable for operations in archipelago. The state-of-the-art diesel electric machin- ery consisted of six 1,700 hp diesel engines, of which each one was coupled to a DC-generator. Two electrical propeller motors were situated aft and two in the bow. The Oden was the first Swedish icebreaker with two propellers also in the bow and these improved the water streaming along the hull, decreasing the friction by ice. The propeller configuration also made it possible to turn the icebreaker on the spot and perform advanced manoeuvering when assisting merchant vessels. When a merchant vessel has got stuck in the ice, the icebreaker usually cuts it lose by passing at full speed very close, thus forcing the ice to losen its grip. If the circumstances are even more difficult the vessel is taken on tow by the icebreaker. The Oden was a naval vessel and manned by the navy. The complement was 62 persons. The first icebreaking expedition commenced in January, 1958. In 1963 the situation was extremely difficult and the Swedish ports in the northern part of Gulf of Bothnia were closed in early January. During the second half of January the situa- HÅKAN SJÖSTRÖM tion deterioriated also in the southern part of the Gulf of Bothnia and the last vessels were evacuated from Gävle, after which the port was closed on 22 January. Now the Oden headed for the Swedish West Coast and Öresund. This winter the icebreaking campaign ended for the Oden on 22 May. The Oden was decommissioned after 30 years of service in April, 1988. Later this year the icebreaker was sold to foreign owners for scrap. According to their original plan, the Oden would tow the decommissioned destroyer the Hälsingland to the same site in India. However the plans were changed and Sweden’s once most powerful icebreaker made her last voyage alone.
