The planting of flowers in the larger of the parks was much heavier
than in previous years, because of the alteration and re-planting of the
perennial beds, which was carried out to maintain a more constant show
of flowers throughout the season and to bring out better harmony with
their surroundings.
At the Douglas Park floral display ground, 7,496 plants, such as the
aquatic grass and hardy perennials, were used in changing the lay-out
around the lily pl)nd at the east end of the ground. The point in view
In the Garfield Park display ground, 61,893 plants and bulbs were
with 400 summer asters, which remained in bloom until October.
In the Humboldt Park rose garden and perennial gardens, 21,860
plants and bulbs were planted, of which 6,476 plants were used in the perennial
borders. In the rose garden, the plants were treated, when required,
with "Insecticide," and "Fungicide." Groups of standard roses
on each side of the rose garden flourished exceptiona11y we11 and elicited
