the attendance of the similar exhibit for 1912 by about 45,000.
Aside from the work performed by the Floral Division in connection
with the Conservatories, all of the floral display grounds in
the several parks of the West Park System have been well taken
The planting of flowers in the larger of the parks was much heavier
than in previous years, because of the alteration and re-planting of the
perennial beds, which was carried out to maintain a more constant show
of flowers throughout the season and to bring out better harmony with
their surroundings.
At the Douglas Park floral display ground, 7,496 plants, such as the
aquatic grass and hardy perennials, were used in changing the lay-out
around the lily pl)nd at the east end of the ground. The point in view
season from spring to fa11. 8,800 plants were used on the peremial
borders at the west end of the flower garden and a total of 55,617 plants
and bulbs were used in this floral ground.
In the Garfield Park display ground, 61,893 plants and bulbs were
set out during the season of 1913; 6,135 plants were used in the replanting
of the perennial beds bordering the flower garden. One border
was reserved for a special show of summer annuals, displayed in the
colors of purple and lavender with a border of white. In the latter part
of July, after these annuals were past blooming, the border was planted
with 400 summer asters, which remained in bloom until October.
In the Humboldt Park rose garden and perennial gardens, 21,860
plants and bulbs were planted, of which 6,476 plants were used in the perennial
borders. In the rose garden, the plants were treated, when required,
with "Insecticide," and "Fungicide." Groups of standard roses
on each side of the rose garden flourished exceptiona11y we11 and elicited
much praise from visitors.
