LANDSCAPE DIVISION.<br />

This Division has charge of the trees and plantation on all the<br />

bo"tlevards, covering an area of 453.3 acres and a length of 29.5 miles,<br />

and fourteen small parks, with a total area of 80.2 acres.<br />

The maintenance consists of trimming and cutting out all dead<br />

trees and shrubs, weeding the shrubbery beds, fertilizing the trees and<br />

shrubs, watering all new and old plantation, spraying when necessary,<br />

replacing dead trees and shrubs, preparing tree holes and shrubbery beds.<br />

About 150 zinc name plates, giving the <strong>com</strong>mon name, the botanical<br />

name, and the native country, were fastened to the trees in certain<br />

sections of Humboldt, Garfield, Douglas and Union Park.<br />

During the season, 179 trees and 1,765 shrubs were planted in the<br />

small parks, and 483 trees and 5,784 shrubs were planted on the boulevards.<br />

BOULEVARDS.<br />

WASHINGTON BOULEVARD<br />

has been maintained as usual. The new city bridge across the river was<br />

opened to traffic on May 26, 1913, since which time traffic on Washington<br />

boulevard has greatly increased.<br />

JACKSON, ASHLAND, OAKLEY AND SACRAMENTO<br />

BOULEVARDS<br />

have all been maintained as usual.<br />

HUMBOLDT BOULEVARD:<br />

That portion of Humboldt boulevard <strong>com</strong>monly known as Logan<br />

Square, north of Humboldt Park, was improved during the past<br />

year, in accordance with the terms and provisions of the special assessment<br />

ordinance therefor, passed by the Board of West <strong>Chicago</strong> Park<br />

Commissioners on February 25, 1913.<br />

The improvement consisted of concrete curb, cement walks, and asphalt<br />

pavement on six inches of Portland cement concrete base. The<br />

sidewalks in front of the business houses were removed and new cement<br />

walks laid, twenty feet wide from the curb to the building line.<br />
