pine's grain is too open for furniture.
People want a knotty product
and you had to buy the best
available pine. Youcan buy pine
locally, but it's often stored in an
outside warehouse and the
moisture content can be 10or 12
per cent, which is too high to use.
It's no problem to get any kind of
wood, but it has to be kiln-dried
down to six or eight per cent
moisture. Youcan't just cut your
wood and then plane it. It has to
be air-dried, steamed, or kilndried
and then planed to be consistent.
I've tried the local wood
for roof trusses and it just doesn't
work out. We have hardwood on
the shelves for a year before it's
used.
"The type of furniture we used
to make was colonial with fancy
carving and lathe work. You get
a better price for that kind of furniture
which needs a lot more
manual work on the same
amount of wood. We don't normally
work with veneers, it's all
solid wood. You can't compete
with department stores, but pe0ple
want locally made furniture
custom-built to fit in a particular
place. Nobodycomes here tosave
quality and likesolid bottoms and
that."
