40 - DECKS AWASH
Pentecostal. Salvation Army,
Anglican. United, and Roman
Catholic. I think there is a sensitivity
to the work of other churches
here. We have a number of
ecumenical services, of course.
Then, if another church is having
a mall fair or takeout supper,
we'll attend theirs and they'll attend
ours. You become very
aware of the programs of others,
and then you begin to wonder
what we can do. We are very Iortunate
within our own parish in
having a real active group of people."
Father Gale sees unemplcyment
as a problem, particularly
for the young and the way it affects
their development.
..A whole mentality could
develop out of it. If the young cannot
see much hope of a job, they
may develop the habit of sitting
back and receiving rather than
contributing...
Fortunately, there are examples
of drive and initiative in
the young, as in the predominant
Iy Roman Catholic community of
51. Judes.
"You have to admire them,"
says Father Gale. "Selling berries,
rabbits, Christmas trees or
whatever from the side of the
road. I noticed that one boy seemed
to have the edge being the first
person on the west end of the
town. He got most of the traffic
coming from the Corner Brook
area. 1ben, when 1was driving to
Corner Brook 1 noticed that
1thought that was rather smart.
1admired his drive and ingenuity.
But when 1came over the next
hill, there was the boy who had
the edge in the first place still
ahead of the other one."
Some of the effects of
unemployment are quite unconscious
and even humorous.
"I heard of one little girl who
asked her mother when she
would be able to start learning to
figure skate," explains Father
Gale. " 'Probably in a few
weeks,' replied her mother. And
then the girl asked, 'After I'm
practising awhile, when do 1get
laid off?' Yau can see how the terminology
enters the language."
Father Gale is also Diocesan
Rector of Liturgy and notes that
this year is the 20th anniversary
of the Second Vatican Council.
"Vatican II was certainly a turning
around of the church, ineluding
the role of the priest
within the church and the church
within society," says Father
Gale. "I think there was initially
a sense of freedom and newness,
but now20years later we are able
to go over those changes, and
realize more fully why they were
made. I think the church today is
very pastoral. It accepts people's
situations and gives the elergy a
greater opportunity to work with
people in their real lives. The
more our society is unsettled and
without roots, the more there is
going to be a need to seek mean
