How it all started…<br />

2004<br />

Royal Society/Royal Academy of Engineering joint report on<br />

‘Nanoscience and <strong>Nanotech</strong>nologies: Opportunities and Uncertainties’<br />

2006<br />

Royal Society felt there was a gap – business was not engaged<br />

Insight Investment had identified potential investment issues and<br />

risks<br />

They approached the <strong>Nanotech</strong>nologies Industries Association which<br />

also saw the need to engage more widely<br />

A Business Workshop was held to explore uncertainties and solutions<br />

2007<br />

The Responsible Nano Code Initiative set up<br />

2008<br />

The Responsible Nano Code launch planned<br />

The Code is not intended to:<br />

x …supplant or delay effective or appropriate regulation<br />

x …be an auditable set of standards<br />

x …offer detailed guidance on performance expectations<br />

x …provide any new definitions, characterisation or<br />

measurement of nanotechnologies
