5) The Youth Policy Institute (YPI) in Los Angeles provides education, training<br />
and technology services for low income families. Youth Policy Institute serves<br />
families in Los Angeles at 85 sites throughout the city. YPI <strong>of</strong>fers families education<br />
and training resources in the areas <strong>of</strong> afterschool, job training, early childhood<br />
education, physical education, adult literacy and ESL, computer literacy, charter<br />
schools, and college preparation. Each year, YPI helps more than 20,000 youth and<br />
adults through these programs. Leaders include Dixon Slingerland, Executive<br />
Director Youth Policy Institute,<br />

6) New York Restoration Project (NYRP) in New York. NYRP is now one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
leading partners <strong>of</strong> the New York City Department <strong>of</strong> Parks & Recreation in<br />
developing underused and new parkland. Through park and garden restoration,<br />
environmental education, and public programs, NYRP has become an important<br />
catalyst for sustainable community development. The goal at NYRP is to ensure that<br />
parks and other open spaces in less privileged neighborhoods become the "Central<br />
Park" <strong>of</strong> those communities, where recreational, educational, and environmental<br />
programs become part <strong>of</strong> the fabric <strong>of</strong> the neighborhood. Leader is Akiima Price,<br />

Dr. Francisco Villarruel, Michigan State University Dr. Francisco<br />
Villarruel, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Family and Child Ecology, Michigan State University.<br />
Dr. Villarruel is Director <strong>of</strong> the Julián Samora Research Institute at MSU and<br />
specializes in family relations and risk factors for Latino youth.<br />
S<strong>of</strong>ia Villenas, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Education, <strong>Cornell</strong> University Dr.<br />
Villenas is affiliated with the Latino/a Studies Program at <strong>Cornell</strong>, was a<br />
bilingual school teacher, and teaches and publishes on educational<br />
anthropology,<br />
Latino education, multiculturalism, language issues, and the<br />
social/political<br />
