EFPI COLLOQUIA AT CSU WITH OUR GLOBAL ALLIANCE PARTNER, THE PRACTICE BASED PROFESSIONAL LEARNING (PBPL) CENTRE OF THE OPEN UNIVERSITY, UK In July 2008 EFPI hosted three CSU events in which CSU staff and students engaged in debate with our colleagues from PBPL and Dr Etienne Wenger who is working with PBPL. Etienne Wenger is a globally recognised thought leader in the field of communities of practice and their application to organizations. Open Seminar 7th July 2008 – Venue: CSU Conference Centre, Bathurst Campus Staff from across the university participated in a seminar with Etienne Wenger on Enhancing Communities of Practice in Higher Education: Perspectives from Social Learning Theory Invited Colloquium 8th‐9th July 2008 – Venue: CSU Conference Centre, Bathurst Campus At this event our PBPL colleagues Professor Pam Shakespeare, Associate Professor Steve Hutchinson and Dr Etienne Wenger engaged with CSU staff and students in debates, presentations, discussion groups and informal conversations on the theme of Practice-based Professional Learning: Investigating Perspectives from Social Learning Theory The goals of the Colloquium were: • To provide a vehicle for in‐depth debate on the discourse and practice of practice‐based professional learning informed by social learning perspectives • To advance understanding of how social learning perspectives can enhance education at CSU by a) informing University policies and strategic plans and b) improving practice‐based professional learning throughout the curricula on and off campus. In welcoming participants, including university leaders (including the Deputy Vice Chancellor and deans, heads of school, centre directors, academics and research students, the Vice‐Chancellor, Professor Ian Goulter said: It is my pleasure to welcome you to this Colloquium. This is an important event in Charles Sturt University’s (CSU) calendar and we are very pleased to have three distinguished colleagues – Etienne Wenger, Steve Hutchinson and Pam Shakespeare – join us in enhancing practice‐based education in our curricula. CSU prides itself on providing practical, employment‐ focused courses that ensure our students graduate with the skills required to step confidently into new employment opportunities. 19
Enhancing Communities of Practice in Practice 11 th July EFPI, North Parramatta Staff and students from EFPI joined Etienne Wenger and Steve Hutchinson (PBPL) in discussing the application of communities of practice concepts and strategies to work practice settings.
