pCOMPOSE BOLDLY: In this shot of a ghost forest in Namibia, Davenport filled most of the frame with the beautiful pattern of the cracked mud in the foreground. The rulerstraight horizon with the sky peeking out beneath the Land Rover emphasizes the vastness of this featureless desert. LESSONS AT 105 DEGREES Instead, I broke the rules and shot straight into the sun, cutting down on flare and increasing contrast using extended lenshoods (and sometimes my Bora Bora hat for shade). While I conceded detail on the animals, the backlighting created delicate silhouettes, casting profiles in stark relief to soft backgrounds. THE NAKED TRUTH Shooting in deserts is difficult and uncomfortable work, and no matter how hard you try to protect it, you will sacrifice gear and images. Lenses will grind, circuit boards will fail, and clean blue skies will be speckled with frustrating blobs. You’ll get sunburned and dehydrated, and you’ll swing your camera pack over your shoulders only to discover you put it down on a dried cactus spine (Dykinga always carries a comb with him, the only easy way to remove pincushion cholla cactus balls once you’ve finished screaming). But there comes a moment on every desert trip where you understand why you pay the price. For me it happened late one evening back on the Makgadikgadi Pan as Venus rose in a coral sky and the day’s sweat began to chill my skin. I wandered away from the Land Rover and lay down to take a silhouette of the vehicle, and Sande and a ranger consulting a map. The earth felt smooth and warm on my belly. And I realized that for me desert photography isn’t about making pretty postcard pictures of famous arches or canyons, it’s simply about being there. It’s something Dykinga relates to. “All the excess and noise of urban living disappears, and you can immerse yourself in the place; you can feel a deep connection. It’s the naked landscape.” And there in the heart of the Kalahari, lying against the bare skin of the Earth, I knew exactly what he meant. 68 WWW.POPPHOTO.COM POP PHOTO FEBRUARY 2009
