Fierce glamour: Dramatic is the word for this month’s cover photo of a model identifi ed only as Stella. Photographer Jan Cobb was “struck by the beauty of this woman and the intensity of color in the hat.” He used a 35mm SLR, 105mm lens with 81A warming fi lter, and Kodachrome slide fi lm. Lighting: a spotlight directed at her face, plus two umbrellabounced fl ash units for the background. 2. Pro at work: Author Frederic W. Rosen and photographer Vin Greco provided a detailed look into Los Angeles pro Norman Seeff’s photography of the rock group Asia. The photos were intended for use on an album cover and poster. Here is what the shoot looked like as the group posed for fi nal shots. 1. Mona Lisa smile: Irish Ii hstarlet t l tEi Erin O’Brien graced the cover in a lovely portrait by Don Ornitz. Working indoors in daylight with a sheet as a refl ector to lighten shadows, he used muted blue and green to emphasize her beauty. The photo was made with an Asahi Pentax 35mm SLR, 135mm f/3.5 Schneider lens, and skylight fi lter. The exposure: 1/5 sec at f/4.5 on Kodachrome. 2. Energy savers: A new generation of electronic fl ash units incorporated monitor circuits to switch the fl ash off between shots, thus saving battery power. Typical of the new breed of fl ash was the Mecablitz 200, which had a Kodachrome GN of 42— an accurate rating, according to Popular Photography tests. Price of the 200: $70. 3. Celebrities by Karsh: Yousuf Y f Karsh, arguably one of the greatest photographers of his time, made many of the most defi nitive portraits of icons of the 1940s and ’50s. In a special portfolio, we found this picture of actress Joan Crawford, every inch the movie star. Karsh used an 8x10 view camera, and composed and lit his pictures carefully for maximum impact. 4. Slides front and back: This Caramate slide projector combined a rearprojection screen for close viewing with a projector for screening images. It included a switch that permitted users to enlarge the center portion of a slide by 50 percent for critical viewing. The price was not yet available at this issue’s release. away, this picture would lack impact, but, at a few inches from the camera, it becomes an interesting still life. It was part of a 3 feature on seven ways to make your photos more interesting. This example was made by Richard J. Wagner of Los Angeles, using a 40mm Macro-Kilar “E” lens on an Exakta VX 35mm SLR. Exposure on Kodachrome Daylight was 1/50 sec at f/5.6 in hazy sunshine. 4. Swiss hit: Amateur photographer Esther Schulz of Makawoo, HI, went halfway around the world for this lovely shot of a Swiss village. She used a moderately priced Argus 21 with a 50mm f/3.5 Cintar lens, proof that a costly camera isn’t required for good pictures. Exposure on Kodachrome Daylight was 1/50 sec at f/5.6. 4
