Chinese Customs Department indicate that <strong>China</strong>-Myanmar bilateral<br />

trade in the first half of <strong>2006</strong> amounted to 662m dollars, a 10.8-per<br />

cent rise compared with the same period of 2005. Of the total,<br />

<strong>China</strong>'s export to Myanmar took 549m dollars, up 30.5 per cent,<br />

while <strong>China</strong>'s import from Myanmar 114m dollars, down 35.9 per<br />

cent. The two countries have set a target for their annual bilateral<br />

trade to increase to 1.5bn dollars. (XNA, 23 Nov 06)<br />

Pakistan (Nov 24)<br />

Cina and Pakistan issued a joint statement in Islamabad on 25<br />

November. The full text of the joint statement is as follows:<br />

1. At the invitation of President Pervez Musharraf of the Islamic<br />

Republic of Pakistan, President Hu Jintao of the People's Republic<br />

of <strong>China</strong> paid a state visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan from 23<br />

to 26 November <strong>2006</strong>. ...<br />

30. During the visit, the two sides signed the following documents<br />

Syria (Dec 19)<br />

The Chinese government awarded Syria approved destination<br />

status for Chinese tour groups. Gu Chaoxi, deputy director of the<br />

<strong>China</strong> National Tourism Administration and Muhammad Khayr<br />

al-Wadi, Syrian ambassador to <strong>China</strong>, signed two documents on<br />

Tuesday, including a bilateral tourism memorandum of
