Note: CPI (A), CPI(B) and CPI(C) are compiled based on the expenditure patterns of households in the<br />

relatively low, medium and relatively high expenditure ranges respectively. A Composite CPI is compiled based<br />

on the overall expenditure pattern of all the above households taken together. The CPI(C) was formerly known<br />

as the Hang Seng CPI and was compiled by the Hang Seng Bank since 1974.<br />

Starting from the reference month of July 1999, the data collection and compilation work of the index have been<br />

taken up by the Census and Statistics Department and the index has been renamed as CPI(C).<br />
