Monday, July 2, 2012 • Volume 14, Issue 26
Congratulations to Dr. Alina Nicoara, in
the cardiac division on being awarded the
designation ‘Fellow of the American Society
of Echocardiography’.
The Fellow designation recognizes those
members who have fulfilled both the
training and performance requirements
that are necessary for certification through
the National Board of Echocardiography.
Attainment of this important standard
of practice recognizes that Dr. Nicoara
is committed to continued excellence
in the field of Echocardiography, as it
applies to diagnosis and management of
Dr. Nicoara joins Drs. Mathew, Stafford-Smith, Aronson, Grichnik,
Podgoreanu and Swaminathan, as previous FASE awardees.
Vann Awarded Albert R. Behnke Award
Congratulations to Dr. Richard Vann, who
was honored at the Annual Meeting of the
Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society by
receiving the Albert R. Behnke Award. This
is the premier award of the UHMS, and is
presented in recognition of outstanding
scientific contributions to advances in the
undersea or hyperbaric biomedical field. His
citation reads as follows:
“Dr. Richard Vann is one of the world’s leading
researchers and authors on decompression
physiology and decompression sickness.
He has authored chapters on these topics
for both the Bennett and Elliott and the Bove
diving medical textbooks. He was recently
the first author of an invited seminar in
Lancet on Decompression Illness. Dr. Vann
graduated from Columbia University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering
and was a Diving Engineer at Ocean Systems, Inc. He then successfully
completed the arduous Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training
program in Coronado, CA. He was both a platoon commander and the
Diving Officer for Underwater Demolition Team 12. Upon receiving a
PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University in 1976, he joined
the faculty of the Duke Hyperbaric Center. He is currently Assistant
Professor Emeritus in Anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center
and consultant to the Divers Alert Network after having been the Vice
President for Research at the Diver’s Alert Network from 1990-2010 and
the Director of Applied Research at the FG Hall Hypo/Hyperbaric Center
at Duke. His research has included decompression modeling, dive
computers, nitrox diving, flying after diving, prognostic factors in DCS
News
therapy, flying with DCS, flying after DCS therapy, first aid oxygen for
DCS, and the influence of elevated inspired oxygen on carbon dioxide
narcosis. His untiring efforts at DAN and at FG Hall have contributed
greatly to diving safety. Dr. Vann’s contributions to the UHMS have
been invaluable to the Society. He has been a Member-at-Large of the
Executive Committee, a four-time member of the Scientific Program
Committee, a two-time Co-Chair of the Scientific Program Committee,
and a long-time member of the UHM Editorial Board. He is currently the
Associate Editor of UHM. Dick Vann’s remarkable accomplishments as
a commercial diver, a SEAL, a diving safety advocate, a decompression
researcher, an author, and as an outstanding member of the UHMS make
him a superb candidate for the Behnke award.”
Cherry Awarded 2012 UHMS Young
Scientist/Doctor Award
Congratulations also to Dr. Anne Cherry, who
received the 2012 UHMS Young Scientist/
Doctor Award. This award, sponsored by
the Japanese Society of Hyperbaric and
Undersea Medicine, is awarded to young
physicians and investigators in the field
whose work is consistently outstanding.
Listed in the citation were Anne’s work
on factors leading to the development of
hypercarbia in divers and her current work
investigating PGC-1α and mitochondrial
biogenesis in sepsis.
“Dr. Cherry is a graduate of Duke Medical
School and currently a senior resident in the Duke Anesthesiology
residency. She is an ACES research scholar in the Department and she
has already shown outstanding promise as a scientist as a published
author and speaker. Her current research investigates the effort of PGC-
1α a transcription cofactors on oxidative metabolism and mitochondrial
biogenesis in staph aureus sepsis. Previous projects have included: 1) a
study of factors contributing to the development of hypercarbia in humans
during immersed exercise at simulated depth, 2) permafrost and weather
forecast modeling and 3) photolithography techniques in geologic
surveying. Moreover, Anne is one of those unique individuals who make
Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine the wonderfully diverse and broadly
multidisciplinary subspecialty that it is. Although she is quiet and soft
spoken, she never fails to project the confidence, competence and poise
that the leaders in this field have always exhibited. She is adventurous
and well-traveled and has generously donated her time and skills to third
world medical causes in Africa and South America.”
Anesthesiology Excellence
The Duke Neurocritical Care Fellowship was re-accredited by the United
Council for Neurologic Subspecialties for 5 years (through 2017) under
Dr. McDonagh’s leadership. We currently have 4 fellows (2 PGY-5 & 2
PGY-6).
Grant Overview
The DREAM Innovation Grant (DIG) supports
innovative high-risk, and potentially high-reward
investigations to accelerate anesthesia and pain
management research.
Research deemed innovative may introduce a new
paradigm, challenge current paradigms, look at
existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit
other uniquely creative qualities. The DIG promotes
new ideas; therefore, proposals need not include
preliminary data. However, a solid rationale for the
work must be provided. Proposed work should not
be the next logical step of previous work, but should
have a high probability of revealing new avenues
of investigation. This program aims to provide pilot
funding that will lead to successful competition for
additional funding beyond the pilot period. The
research concept, scientific team, and explicit plans
for how this work will lead to follow-on funding will be
the primary criteria for judging. These points should
be specifically addressed in the application.
The principal investigator (PI) is responsible for
clearly and explicitly articulating the project’s
innovation and the potential impact on anesthesia
and pain management research.
Eligibility: Faculty level appointment with in the
Department of Anesthesiology
One of the grants will be reserved to support a
beginning scientist (within 5 years of completion
of residency or fellowship) by encouraging and
adequately funding projects that can contribute to
bridging the gap between training and progression to
independent investigator status. The other award(s)
will be used as a seed grant to help investigators with
promising science obtain preliminary data to support
follow-on funding applications.
