Human Simulation and Patient Safety
Center Wins “Simmy Award”
Jeff Taekman, MD
The Society of Simulation in Healthcare has
grown considerably since a group of 10 of
us started it in 2004--current membership
is over 3000. Incidentally, because of our
efforts, Duke is recognized as one of only
5 “Founding Sponsors” of SIH. http://www.
ssih.org/SSIH/ssih/Home/AboutSSH/Default.
aspx
Originally, we had 60 meeting attendees. This
year, there were 2700 attendees-including
500 walk-ins. The attendees were from a
broad range of disciplines (64 unique) and
countries (28). It was a sight to behold.
At our Editorial Board meeting, we were told
our journal, Simulation in Healthcare, was
the fastest launch in LWW history. We are
already indexed and will receive our impact factor later this year. The
journal will extend its global reach into China in the upcoming year.
The Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center had a great meeting.
One of our studies with medical students won a Simmy Award
(picked from all the simulation publications over the year) for the most
innovative educational research strategy: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/
pubmed/18825572
We had a major presence in the Virtual Environment / Serious Games
offerings at the meeting--a track / group I started 4 years ago. Two years
ago, I passed the reins onto a nurse from Wisconson named Eric Bauman,
but was just elected to Chair the Special Interest Group once again.
The HSPSC was endorsed (after a lengthy application and peer evaluation
process) as part of the American Society of Anesthesiologist’s Simulation
Network. This will allow us to offer Maintenance of Certification courses
for folks in their MOC cycle. Anesthesiology is among the first specialties
to REQUIRE simulation for continuing certification.
We will be participating, with 9 of the other top simulation centers in the
country, in a multi-center AHRQ-funded study (piggy-backed on MOCA)
that will begin the journey towards the use of simulation in high stakes
assessment.
“Neurotrophine-mediated PI 3-kinase Signaling in Neuronal
Survival and Drug Development”
Keqiang Ye, PhD
Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Emory University School of Medicine
My presentation dissects how NGF-mediated nuclear PIKE/PI3K signaling
cascades regulate neuronal survival through biochemical purification. To
search for the physiological actions of this signaling, we generated PIKE
knockout mice and found that PIKE plays an essential role for neuronal
survival. In order to identify the neurotrophin mimetic compounds, we
established a cell-based drug screening assay and successfully identified
and characterized a TrkB receptor agonist. Further, we had assessed
the physiological effectd of this compound in a variety of animal models.
Identification of this orally bioactive compound provides a powerful
therapeutic option for various neurological diseases.
Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia
Preceptorship Course
2010 Dates Available | Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC
For more information, email Katherine Siler: siler006@mc.duke.edu.
Participants in the Duke Preceptorship will spend three days in the regional block
area, operating rooms and on the floor with post surgery patients observing ultrasound
guided single shot nerve blocks and catheter techniques in a wide variety of
clinical scenarios. They will learn how to set up the block area for maximum efficiency
in the OR environment, improve their decision making ability and make choices
in the performance of regional anesthesia. A one-on-one discussion with the Duke
Faculty member reviewing cases, scanning techniques and the image library as
well as covering handout materials will augment the preceptorship experience.
Visiting Preceptorship in Intraoperative
Transesophageal Echocardiography
2010 Dates Available | Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC
For more information, email Jaime C. Cooke: jca24@notes.duke.edu.
Participants in the Duke Intraoperative TEE Preceptorship spend one three-day
session in the cardiac operating suites, observing techniques of intraoperative TEE
and interpretation of images. Preceptors will participate in active discussions with
cardiothoracic anesthesia faculty and fellows, and learn the basic TEE exam. They
will also learn how to troubleshoot difficult cases and enhance their decision-making
skills in the operating room. Cases will be reviewed with fellows and faculty and images
from pathology libraries will be used to augment the preceptorship experience.
