<strong>Duke</strong> CRNA’s Second Annual<br />

Retreat was held on September<br />

27th on the grounds of the<br />

Nursing School and it was an<br />

amazing day for speakers. Both<br />

Kevin Sowers and MaryAnn<br />

Fuchs gave their traditional<br />

opening remarks but it was the<br />

keynoters that followed who left<br />

everyone with lasting<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> Basketball Team and the<br />

gold medal winners of the US<br />

Basketball Team, spoke about<br />

teamwork. How we are much<br />

greater than the sum of our parts<br />

when we work together. Ridley<br />

Barron delivered a personal,<br />

heartwrenching yet inspirational<br />

story that left most of us in tears.

Our very own Dr. Tony Roche talked about his own personal experience with<br />

one of our own and the impact we have on our patient’s lives on a personal level.<br />

Jim Temo updated our group on the 2nd Mission of Uganda and lastly Dr. Sally<br />

Karioth’s perpetual message of not letting the small stuff get to you....It was a<br />

day you couldn’t describe to anyone else. You just had to be there to get it.<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> <strong>University</strong> School of Nurse Anesthesia<br />

Our own AANA Student Representative Emily Funk, class of 2010 attended the Joint Committee Conference<br />

in September in Chicago, Illinois. Her first article comes out in November, so be on the lookout!<br />

Thank you to those <strong>Duke</strong> SRNAs who attended the NCANA annual meeting in Myrtle Beach, SC. Though<br />

our fine College Bowl team did not bring home the gold, we are very proud of them!<br />

Congratulations to Erika Dorr, class of 2010 on selection as the NCANA <strong>2008</strong>-2009 Board Representative, as<br />

well as her marriage on <strong>October</strong> 11, <strong>2008</strong>! Be on the lookout for her updates as well!<br />

Look for the <strong>Duke</strong> SRNAs in the NCANA <strong>2008</strong> Winter ANETIC!<br />

Congratulations to Jared Weeks, class of 2010 and his wife on the birth of a baby girl, Addison, Tuesday,<br />

September 23, <strong>2008</strong>. She weighed in at 7lbs, 7oz and was 21”long with a perfect APGAR!<br />

Tim Haigh<br />

Tim was born and bred in Seattle,<br />

Washington. Graduated from<br />

<strong>University</strong> of Washington in 1997 with<br />

a degree in anthropology and eyes on<br />

law school. After working in legal<br />

publishing for 2 years in Boston he<br />

decided that a career in nursing was<br />

more his style and grad. from Johns<br />

Hopkins. He worked in both an<br />

infectious disease and a pediatric unit<br />

and eventually graduated from USC<br />

Anesthesia School in Columbia, SC in<br />

2006. His hobbies include: travel,<br />

tennis, learning how to play the French<br />

horn and fishing in Alaska. He also<br />

has a Pug named Lucy and a Beagle<br />

named Maggie along with a 75 gallon<br />

saltwater fish tank!<br />

Adam Flowe<br />

Please welcome Adam to our group.<br />

He was born in Newport <strong>News</strong>, VA<br />

and grew up near Williamsburg, VA.<br />

He attended William and Mary,<br />

graduating in ’93. In his former life he<br />

taught public high school English in<br />

VA and Chapel Hill. After wising up<br />

he attended and graduated UNC-CH<br />

nursing school in 2001. Adam worked<br />

for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Ft.<br />

Worth, TX for 2 years and also worked<br />

at <strong>Duke</strong> before going to the Raleigh<br />

Nurse Anesthesia Program. He is<br />

married to Mollie and they have 3<br />

children all under 6 years old; Eva,<br />

Libby and Charlie.<br />

Kevin Dedmond<br />

Kevin was born in Ft. Walton Beach,<br />

Florida and grew up in Lincolnton, NC<br />

just outside Charlotte. Kevin<br />

graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with<br />

2 degrees-Biology in 1999 and<br />

Nursing in 2003. After working in the<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> CT unit for 2.5 years he went off<br />

to the <strong>Duke</strong> Anesthesia School.<br />

Kevin’s hobbies include: ping pong,<br />

reading Russian literature, disc golf<br />

and a 7 yo Shephard mix named Lars.<br />

He leans more to Swedish heavy metal<br />

music and hip hop. His favorite<br />

restaurant is Carrburitos and watering<br />

hole is Speakeasy in Carrboro. In his<br />

spare time, NYC is still one of his<br />

favorite places to visit.<br />
