Mission Statement<br />

The mission <strong>of</strong> this department is to provide the highest quality patient<br />

care and to engage in superior academic pursuits through excellence in<br />

teaching and research. Aspiring to our goal is a team <strong>of</strong> skilled anesthesia<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals with different educational backgrounds and unique abilities<br />

who embrace collaborative, collegial, and complementary relationships.<br />

Specifically, we endeavor to<br />

• deliver first-rate patient care in operating, labor, and delivery rooms,<br />

postanesthetic and intensive care units, the hyperbaric center and<br />

perioperative activities (including surgical screening clinic and acute<br />

pain management);<br />

• provide consultant services for preoperative and postoperative care;<br />

• coordinate a multidisciplinary approach in diagnosis and treatment <strong>of</strong><br />

acute and chronic pain disorders;<br />

• provide leadership and administrative support in organizing<br />

operating rooms, intensive care units, ambulatory surgery,<br />

transesophageal echocardiography service, hyperbaric medicine<br />

and the heart center;<br />

• assess quality care and patient outcomes, develop programs to<br />

facilitate cost effectiveness, and enhance operating room efficiency;<br />

• promote an environment supportive <strong>of</strong> learning and growth, in which<br />

each departmental member serves as an appropriate and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

role model;<br />

• enlarge knowledge through vigorous investigative laboratory and<br />

clinical research programs; and<br />

• conduct all pr<strong>of</strong>essional matters in an ethical manner in order to<br />

bring pride and honor to the anesthesia department and fellow <strong>Duke</strong><br />

Medical Center colleagues.<br />
