1 • INTRODUCTION Introduction Two thousand and four was clearly an exciting year for Duke University and for the Duke Department of Anesthesiology. With the recruitment of a new chancellor, a fresh outlook and renewed focus on strengths of the medical center including surgery and anesthesia, this year and our future became especially bright. With these new opportunities came additional challenges, challenges that the department has met head-on due to its outstanding, innovative faculty, its superior residents and fellows, and its superb clinical and basic scientists. The department continues to be recognized for its growing strengths in education, clinical research and outcomes assessment, and despite the feeling that the quality of people coming into the field must plateau, bright and talented individuals continue to seek their training at our institution. If we are to fully understand our strengths, it is best to learn how to see ourselves through the eyes of others. In asking other chairs to assess the strengths of our anesthesiology program, the chairs clearly recognized our ability to continue to invest in the career development of our faculty, our focus on the advancement of our patient care through ongoing basic and clinical outcomes research, and the commitment to train the leaders of tomorrow by focusing on key principles that are essential to the long-term outcome of our field. The year also included the enhancement of our Duke Anesthesiology Alumni capabilities that will offer our Alumni increased opportunities to participate in the educational offerings of the department as well as contribute in other ways. The newly formed Duke Anesthesia Alumni Society (DAAS) will have its first off-site meeting in 2006. MARK F. NEWMAN, MD Merel H. I want to thank all the members of our department and hope that we can draw satisfaction from the fact that the patient we see in the clinical operating room today has a better future and a better quantity and quality of life because of what we’ve accomplished as a team. I hope this will continue to be our focus, and if asked, “What do you do?” we will respond, “I’m part of a Duke team that advances the care of the perioperative patient, and I’m proud of it.” I also hope when our alumni are asked where they were trained, they will respond, “I trained at Duke, the best Department of Anesthesiology in the world.” MARK F.
