Enjoy playing “Simon Says” to follow<br />

directions and try new large motor skills.<br />

Demonstrate or try to balance on one foot<br />

for at least five seconds.<br />

Begin to demonstrate how to do<br />

something new that they have learned.<br />

Follow simple movements during play<br />

and activities.<br />

Engage in activities or songs that require<br />

them to follow simple movements.<br />

Use various sized containers, such as baskets<br />

for playing basketball, and practice throwing<br />

the balls into the containers.<br />

Roll medium to large balls to knock<br />

over water bottles or blocks.<br />

Encourage children to throw, bounce, and<br />

kick balls to one another.<br />

Give children opportunities to climb, do<br />

somersaults, and roll their whole bodies.<br />

Have children try to walk with a bean bag on<br />

their heads.<br />

Make stilts for children to balance on with<br />

tuna or coffee cans and some rope.<br />

Create obstacle courses indoors and out<br />

to practice motor skills.<br />

Provide scarves, streamers or other props<br />

and move to music.<br />

Do stretching exercises (e.g., bending<br />

sideways, touching toes, etc.).<br />

Use descriptive movement phrases (e.g.,<br />

“float like a bubble”, or “pop like popcorn”<br />

and let children demonstrate).<br />

Create pictures of various dance forms<br />

(e.g., ballet, tap, ice skating) and encourage<br />

children to try to demonstrate them.<br />

Play music with various tempos (e.g., fast<br />

or slow) and have children move to them.<br />

Create a “treasure hunt” map incorporating<br />

basic movements (e.g., over, under, in,<br />

between) and encourage children to find<br />

the treasure.<br />
