In this Figure 2.3, the light yellow circles represent current centers of development and<br />

the darker orange areas represent new growth. New growth is accommodated in a<br />

variety of different scenarios, depending on the planning <strong>decision</strong>s made by the region’s<br />

citizens and officials. Each alternative urban <strong>for</strong>m will have a different <strong>energy</strong> use<br />

profile.<br />

Relationship between urban density and urban <strong>for</strong>m is the other major subject<br />

about theoretical urban <strong>for</strong>m studies. According to Sassin (1981), although the urban<br />

land-use density of <strong>energy</strong> demand may well be reduced in future, urban settlements<br />

could exist on the basis of distributed <strong>energy</strong> sources and will require at least some<br />

degree of centralization of <strong>energy</strong> supply systems (see Figure 2.4 and Figure 2.5).<br />
