Scope and content: Includes records pertaining to Burtin’s emigration from Germany, personal
photographs mainly documenting his travels [many during business trips], personal
correspondence with family and friends, personal financial records, and eulogies and tributes
after his death. Quoted folder headings were taken from Burtin’s descriptions of the material.
Subseries A. Immigration and travel, c.1857-1968
Scope and content: Contains German records, consisting of apprenticeship papers, report
cards, and family birth and marriage certificates. Mementos important to Burtin and
brought from Germany include a 1928 edition of Jan Tschichold’s Die Neue Typographie
and 1930 edition of Eine Stunde Druckgestaltung. Also includes German and American
passports, and a small amount of records pertaining to Will and Hilde Burtin’s
immigration into the United States in 1938. Quoted folder headings were taken from
Burtin’s descriptions of the material.
