EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
To answer the needs of today’s duel career families,
new child care options have emerged to shape and expand
Sullivan’s career programs to include the Professional Nanny
Diploma and the Associate of Science degree in Early
Childhood Education. Although It has been hundreds of
years since the game of hopscotch was developed, children can still be found
on playgrounds entertaining themselves with chalk and any variety of hopscotch
diagrams dodging obstacles and balancing themselves to get from one end to
the other successfully. Sullivan’s faculty and staff will continue their efforts as well
to educate early childhood professionals to balance what is best for children with
trends and new technologies to impact the lives of parents and children for many
years to come.
Students responses to annual survey
gives Sullivan’s Library high marks
Sullivan University’s Library uses its
annual survey to determine how well
students’ and faculty needs are being
met by the library. The survey, which
was conducted earlier this year for
students and recently for faculty,
asked each to rate the library and its
services. According to survey results,
93% of Sullivan students and faculty
would rate the library’s services as
“Good” or “Excellent.”
Students and faculty were also impressed
with the depth of the library’s
collection. In fact, 91% of participants
rated the collection as being complete
and comprehensive and 93% of
students rated the library collection as
being “Mostly/Always adequate” in
meeting their research needs.
Students commented that Sullivan’s
library was doing a great job of “Pro-
viding quality materials and services,”
“the law information is excellent,” and
stated that the “culinary cookbook
selection is great!”
Participants in the survey were
invited to comment on their library experiences.
Faculty had this to say about
the library: “The library staff is very
concerned with
excellence and
always makes
moves to maintain
excellence and to
go beyond prior
expectations,” and
“The College of
Pharmacy is brand
new and the library
has a close and very
LETTER FROM A CURRENT STUDENT
“I wanted to thank you so much for
taking time out of your schedule to help
me out with my paper . . . I was pleasantly
surprised to see an email from you this
morning listing links to some sites that
you thought would be helpful. Indeed,
they are all very helpful! I also picked
up what you had printed out for me. I
appreciate all that you have done. It may
seem like a little to you, but it is a lot to
me. People like you are the reason I love
attending Sullivan.”
faculty.” Sullivan students had many
positive things to say about the library
as well: ”Excellent upkeep with the
computers & resources, ex.: books,
magazines, databases, etc.,” and
“helpful great resources and very nice
learning environment.”
Sullivan University
FALL 2008
Sullivan University provided alum
with “the perfect degree plan”
What’s the easiest and best way
to get from Point A to Point B? Plus
move a bazillion tons of stuff along the
way? And, find a place to store all the
stuff when it arrives? Simply put -
that’s called Logistics & Distribution
Management. And for alum Kevin
Wanner, his degree in that field will be
the springboard into his next career.
Enlisted in the Army
Kevin had enlisted in the Army
between his junior and senior years of
high school; he left for basic training
immediately after graduating. He
had been in the Army for 15 years
and wanted to transition into
a career when he retired
from the service in 2009.
Stationed at Fort Knox,
Kevin enrolled in a
training and development
program
through an in-state
university but “when
we started training
and mobilizing
National Guard and
soldiers for Iraq and
Afghanistan, I was
no longer able to
attend class.” He
continued, “After
9/11, the Army’s
focus switched
from training units
on a seldom-used
basis to immediately
mobilizing them out
of Camp Shelby in
Minnesota and
Fort McCoy in
Wisconsin. I spent
nine months a year,
for four years in either
location so my options to continue
college were very limited.”
Sullivan was the answer
His Army experience gave Kevin
a strong background in planning,
supervising and leadership. And in
2005, Sullivan University’s online
offering of Logistics & Distribution
Management gave Kevin “the perfect
degree plan.”
Kevin’s decision to transfer to
Sullivan was an easy one. His wife,
Regina, was already enrolled in
ERIkA DODSON
“I would definitely have to
say my fondest memory of Sullivan
was my graduation day. I had
basically joined the army because
I didn’t think I could get into any
college after high school since I was
a C, D and occasionally F student
there; barely graduated. To see the
look on my parents faces when I
walked the stage magna-cum-laude
was absolutely priceless.”
Sullivan’s Microsoft/Cisco program;
Kevin was familiar with the great
benefits and career opportunities
available at Sullivan University.
Ready for his next career
As a husband, father and full-time
soldier Kevin was unable to participate
in any of Sullivan’s many social activities.
But “I did enjoy all my professors, both
online and in the classroom. Thanks
to my Sullivan degree, my career
opportunities are now limitless.
Just by having this degree I have experienced
a tremendous amount
of interest in me,” Kevin stated,
adding, “I am retiring in June
2009 and have already been
asked for dozens of my
resumés. Organizations in
Fort Leonardwood, Missouri
are interested in
college graduates and
there are only a handful
of us that have earned
a bachelor’s degree.
Because of my Sullivan
University degree plan, I
learned a lot about taking
what I do now in the Army
and transferring those skills
over to the civilian sector.”
Good advice
Kevin offered advice
to current or prospective
students interested in
pursuing Sullivan’s Logistics
& Distribution Management
degree. “Never put
off school. A lot of people
take numerous quarters or
even years off. Not only is
it more difficult to get back
into the swing of things,
they are losing valuable
time in which they could be more
marketable.” He also suggested that,
“Sullivan students in Louisville should
highly consider applying at the UPS hub
there. They are looking for individuals
with that unique skill, adding, “I would
do the same but will be staying in
Missouri for a few more years.”
Thank you for your years of service to
our country, Kevin and for sharing your
story. Sullivan University and The Herald
staff sends our best wishes to you.
Good luck in your new career!
