LEXINGTON
KENTUCKY
Sullivan University-Lexington's
new culinary program is providing
wonderful career opportunities
for its students.
Both Rick Abel and Kevin
Woodson were excited when they
heard that Sullivan’s main campus
award-winning Culinary Arts program
was now being offered in
Lexington. Rick has always loved
to cook, but as a
busy father of three,
he didn't have time
to commute to
Louisville. The new
Lexington program
made it possible for
him to pursue his
dream and he's enjoying every
minute of it. Kevin Woodson had
also closed the door on pursuing
a culinary career until he heard
about the new program. “I love
the school and the interesting
people. Now I think I would like
to open a bakery,” he stated.
Many of the students have
cooked professionally for years,
but wanted to know more.
Lauryn Baker, who is
currently a part-time
professional caterer,
said, “I hope to open
my own restaurant
after I complete
this program.” Another student,
Paul Eades, has worked in food
service for ten years - first as a cook
in the Marine Corps, and then as a
corporate
trainer
for Chili's
Restaurant
chain. He
plans to
work as a
chef when
he graduates
from
Sullivan.
No experience necessary!
You don't need professional
cooking experience to attend
Sullivan's program. Donald
Catlett has been cooking
since he was fourteen for
family and friends. “I love
the classes! I hope to be
a chef for my cousin's
new restaurant,” he said.
Jonathan Martin, currently
in manufacturing, now wants to
open a bakery.
World-wide interest
While many students commute
from the surrounding counties,
international student Michelle
Darmawan wins the prize for the
longest distance traveled. She
came from
Indonesia
just to
attend
Sullivan's
culinary
program!
“I've always
enjoyed
cooking;
my father heard about Sullivan and
urged me to come,” Michelle said,
adding, “I just love the program!”
Sullivan's career-focus is a hit with employers!
Sullivan University’s Graduate
Employment Services (GES)
Career Fair was a huge success.
Many different employment positions
were available, ranging from
part-time positions to salaried and
management opportunities. With
a record 45 employers and nearly
200 students, graduates, and
alumni in attendance, the
University's entire second floor
was hopping with activity.
Sullivan students in top demand
Employers look forward to
Rick Abel & Lauryn Baker
It speaks well of the
quality of Sullivan’s students
and graduates
that many employers
return year after year
and new ones are
eager to participate. Christy
Employer feedback is an
important element of Sullivan
University's Graduate Employment
Service’s mission to educate students
on how to prepare strong
exhibit proper business etiquette.
Instant hires at the Fair
As a result of the Career Fair,
many students and graduates are
on their way to gaining valuable
work experience in their field.
Samantha Osborn was hired on
the spot for a Customer
Participation in the Career Fair
is a chance to meet area employers
on a personal level, check out the
competition, and gain valuable
insight into one’s chosen career
Culinary students Kristin Davis
Central Kentucky
Career Competition
Sullivan's Lexington campus
recently hosted the sixth annual
Central Kentucky Career Competition
(CKCC). Juniors and seniors
from high schools across Kentucky
participated in competitions to
win scholarships and awards. The
University offered 12 different
competitions, allowing students to
participate in events that matched
their skill levels. First place in the
team competition went to Lafayette
High School; Harrison County
ATC placed second and Scott
County High School placed third.
Food for thought
A group of Early Childhood
Education students traveled to
Louisville to join their counterparts
on Sullivan’s main campus to
attend an etiquette luncheon at
Winston’s, an award-winning
gourmet restaurant staffed by
Tracey Holder saw this as an ideal
opportunity. “The students gained
the benefit of working on an actual
business case scenario learning
how to apply new skills, while the
co-op partner was challenged to
re-evaluate long standing beliefs
and business practices. Both the
students and myself as a partner,
took away from the experience
new knowledge that we both could
readily apply.”
At the end of the quarter, both
teams presented the project results
via a final presentation during
which the project partners were
present to evaluate. Both students
and business partners were very
satisfied with the experience and
results of the project.
Come to the Fair!
Sullivan’s Organizational Fair
is a good opportunity for new
students to find out more about
the organizations on campus.
The Paralegal Society, Early
Childhood Education, TAP
(Tomorrow's Administrative
Professionals), Phi Beta Lambda,
Travel, Perdón, and Medical
Assisting organizations were on
hand at the recent event.
Participating in organizations can
enrich students' college experiences.
Lifelong friendships and
job connections are made when
students get acquainted with
others who have the same career
interests. It also gives students
valuable experience with the
community while creating an
extensive network for job leads.
about the WOW theory of leadership. Mr. Scanlon is also Chief Executive Officer
of Thomas and King Inc., the parent company of many Applebee's franchises in
Central Kentucky. Mr. Scanlon claims that the success of the T&K Applebee's has
not been due to the wonderful food (although many of us enjoy it very much!)
rather, it is the service you receive from all involved in making your experience at
Applebee's a great one, prompting you to “WOW!” at the attention to detail and
the servers’ desire to go above and beyond. Mr. Scanlon emphasized with the
Sullivan students the importance of integrating WOW into their future careers.
students in Sullivan's Culinary Arts
program. While dining, students
received etiquette information
and tips from the staff. Everyone
enjoyed the opportunity to interact
and experience fine dining.
“Many in the legal profession are
AT YOUR SERVICE
In today's marketplace, when most products
and services are of equal quality, extra attention
to customer service is what gives a business the competitive edge. Instructor
Mary Johnikin took several members of her Customer Service class, MKT 201, to
breakfast at the Crowne Plaza's Campbell House Inn to highlight the importance of
good customer service and gather data for a collaborative learning project. Students
found the trip very revealing. “We got the chance to actually experience and analyze
the customer service of an organization in person,” commented Julie Buchanan. She
continued, “It’s one thing to read about effective customer service, but it is much
more practical to experience it in real life . . . I think that field trips are a great
aspect that Sullivan University provides; they show you real situations in the work
field that truly aid the learning experience.” The class had an enjoyable, as well as,
educational experience learning about the elements that create a service culture.
A really cool class!
California Cruisin'
Sullivan’s Travel & Tourism
Program's Fall Trip took students
to the fun and exotic sights of
California and Mexico on the
Carnival Cruise Line. “Paradise”
was not only the name of the
students' cruise ship, but was also
a fitting description of their trip
exploring the sights and sounds
from California's Catalina Island to
Ensenada, Mexico.
A “first-class” experience
The trip got off to an exciting
start as the airline overbooked the
flight. A few students were bumped
up to the first-class cabin, and
found themselves sitting
next to Scott Hamilton,
the famous Olympic
figure skater! When
they landed in
California, these
students had
his autograph on
their “Travel Bear,”
as well as photos
and fond memories
of their flight.
Hurray for Hollywood
In Los Angeles, students
received a taste of big city life
from expressway gridlock to street
performers to shopping to dining
at ethnic restaurants. The highlight
was the Backlot Studios Tour where
they saw several famous movie and
TV sets, such as the new War of the
Worlds film and the Desperate
Housewives neighborhood.
During the tour, students
learned how “Hollywood magic”
is created, as the tour guide
explained how almost everything
on the sets is made of foam rubber,
styrofoam and plastic - even the
rocks, trees and the shrubbery!
Next stop: “Paradise”
The students embarked on the
next leg of their trip with a drive to
Long Beach, California and their
Emily Given and Whitni
Tufts with the Hollywood
Hills in the background.
first stop was the Queen
Mary, now permanently
anchored in the harbor as
a hotel. After exploring
the famous ship, rumored
to be haunted, Sullivan
students continued on to
the Carnival cruise ship
“Paradise” where they
experienced first-hand how
a cruise begins, including:
how guests are processed
onto the ship, how charge
accounts are established, how
purchases are set up with a “Sign
and Sail” card, and how a lifeboat
drill is conducted.
Great educational
experience
Students availed
themselves of many
invaluable opportunities
for observing
professional voyage
event managers in
action as the stu-
dents experienced all
that the Paradise had to
offer. They had a birds-eye
view of how arrangements
were handled for endless fine dining
opportunities, an assortment
of entertainment choices, poolside
fun and on-deck activities.
Charming Catalina Island
The first port-of-call was
Catalina Island, a quaint, upscale
community just off the California
coast. Students enjoyed experiencing
the unique lifestyle on the
island where people travel by golf
carts and seeing a car is a novel
sight. They also experienced how
a large cruise ship “tenders” or
moves their guests to shore when
docked remotely at a port of call.
Bargain hunting in Mexico
The next stop was Ensenada,
a mid-size Mexican city on the
Pacific coast. Students visited an
The Sky's the Limit
After retiring from a demanding job of 27 years,
most people would take it easy for a few months,
but Peggy Thomas is not your average person.
She is now a full time student working towards
an Associate of Science Degree in Travel, Tourism,
Peggy Thomas & Event Management.
While working as an administrative assistant at the University of
Kentucky and raising her family, Peggy always dreamed of a life filled
with exciting destinations. Both her parents worked in the travel
industry: her father as an American Airlines pilot for 42 years and her
mother as an airline stewardess. They instilled in her a love of travel
from an early age. Now retired, Peggy's set out to fulfill her dream by
pursuing a second career as a travel agent.
“It's exciting to be a student again. I think you appreciate the
opportunity to pursue your education even more once you've been in
the workforce for a while,” Peggy observes. “I love taking classes and
learning from other students.” She is currently developing a travel
brochure for the Cayman Islands as part of her studies.
Peggy knows the secret to success - keep learning new skills and
exploring new opportunities. Her attitude about the future is “the
sky's the limit!” Expand your career horizons. Let Sullivan University's
stair-step approach to learning help your career take flight.
open air market enjoying the
carnival-like atmosphere and the
wide variety of products available
for purchasing. They learned never
to pay the asking price, but to
haggle until the price was right.
The students spent their evening
sampling authentic Mexican cuisine
and dancing at the local
hotspots. Some of the students
took an exciting excursion to the
world's second largest blowhole
by way of upscale Mexican transportation
- an old school bus without
At Sullivan University's first
from local non-profit agencies,
including the YMCA, the United
and the Ronald McDonald House,
were on hand to answer questions
about volunteer opportunities.
Students learned ways they
could contribute and make a difference
in someone's life. They
also discovered that no matter
how hectic their schedules, there
was a volunteer opportunity to fit
BEHIND THE SCENES Sullivan University's Medical
Assisting students recently went behind the scenes at the Kentucky State
Medical Examiner's Office and the Kentucky State Police Forensic Crime Lab
in Frankfort. Instructor Violet Sylvia escorted students from her Anatomy &
Physiology III class to tour the facility and participate in a Health Fair. Mike
Sullivan, gave students an insider's view of daily operations and autopsy
procedures. Left to right: Caron Neal, Krista Young, Jamie Stephens, Carrie
receive recognition for the best chili on campus.
The Computer Club donated most of the proceeds
Mentors for foster children
Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) members recently volunteered
as mentors for SAFY (Specialized Alternatives for
Families & Youth) for their annual parenting seminar.
SAFY is a not-for-profit agency that provides treatment,
foster care, adoption programs, and services to youth
and their families in need throughout America. While
parents were attending seminars, club members
accompanied children to the Double Stink Hog Farm
in Georgetown, where they visited the petting zoo,
which included kangaroos, zebras, and camels and got
their choice of pumpkins! After lunch, it was off to the
Georgetown Pavilion, where they had the option of
swimming in the indoor water park, playing basketball,
or running around the track. The children were not
the only ones who had a wonderful day. PBL member
Natasha Lawson's excitement was contagious. “This
was an amazing experience,” she said. “I thoroughly
enjoyed helping SAFY. This is a great organization
and I believe what they are doing for these kids is
wonderful. I will definitely be attending the next
SAFY event.”
When Angela Browning began
degree program in 2002, her coworkers
said they did not think it
would improve her career opportunities.
Boy, were they wrong!
At the time, she didn't
know for certain if all
of her hard work
would pay off,
but she's been
amazed by the
number of doors
that have opened
since starting
Sullivan’s graduate
school program!
In September 2004, Angela
landed an accounting position with
Wintech, a major automotive parts
provider for Nissan, GM, Honda,
and Subaru. A mere eight months
later, she was offered a promotion
to Accountant II. In addition to the
title change, she received more
responsibility and a huge salary
increase, but what really excited
degree.” In August, her manager
approached her again, this time
to ask if Angela wanted to
be a Green Belt in the Six
Process. Angela said,
“He told me that
the Quality Manager,
a Six Sigma Black
Belt, requested me
because he heard
about my MBA and the
improvements I had
