Graduate students excel at
developing real-world marketing plans
One of the appeals of Sullivan
University's programs is the
opportunity to apply learning
to the real world of business.
Instructor Dr. Matthias Herfert led
Master of Business Administration
(MKT570) through a cooperative
project with two local organizations:
Interlake Materials and Handling, Inc.
of Lexington and the Neighborhood
Watch Program of the Louisville
Metro Police Department.
The class formed two teams to
work on a marketing plan for each
Central Kentucky
Career Competition
Sullivan's Lexington campus
recently hosted the sixth annual
Central Kentucky Career Competition
(CKCC). Juniors and seniors
from high schools across Kentucky
participated in competitions to
win scholarships and awards. The
University offered 12 different
competitions, allowing students to
participate in events that matched
their skill levels. First place in the
team competition went to Lafayette
High School; Harrison County
ATC placed second and Scott
County High School placed third.
Food for thought
A group of Early Childhood
Education students traveled to
Louisville to join their counterparts
on Sullivan’s main campus to
attend an etiquette luncheon at
Winston’s, an award-winning
gourmet restaurant staffed by
Tracey Holder saw this as an ideal
opportunity. “The students gained
the benefit of working on an actual
business case scenario learning
how to apply new skills, while the
co-op partner was challenged to
re-evaluate long standing beliefs
and business practices. Both the
students and myself as a partner,
took away from the experience
new knowledge that we both could
readily apply.”
At the end of the quarter, both
teams presented the project results
via a final presentation during
which the project partners were
present to evaluate. Both students
and business partners were very
satisfied with the experience and
results of the project.
Come to the Fair!
Sullivan’s Organizational Fair
is a good opportunity for new
students to find out more about
the organizations on campus.
The Paralegal Society, Early
Childhood Education, TAP
(Tomorrow's Administrative
Professionals), Phi Beta Lambda,
Travel, Perdón, and Medical
Assisting organizations were on
hand at the recent event.
Participating in organizations can
enrich students' college experiences.
Lifelong friendships and
job connections are made when
students get acquainted with
others who have the same career
interests. It also gives students
valuable experience with the
community while creating an
extensive network for job leads.
Nicole Bradshaw, Ty Uden, Annie Gabbard, and Brittany Brady were “WOWED!”
when Lexington Vice-Mayor Mike Scanlon (center) came to the campus to speak
about the WOW theory of leadership. Mr. Scanlon is also Chief Executive Officer
of Thomas and King Inc., the parent company of many Applebee's franchises in
Central Kentucky. Mr. Scanlon claims that the success of the T&K Applebee's has
not been due to the wonderful food (although many of us enjoy it very much!)
rather, it is the service you receive from all involved in making your experience at
Applebee's a great one, prompting you to “WOW!” at the attention to detail and
the servers’ desire to go above and beyond. Mr. Scanlon emphasized with the
Sullivan students the importance of integrating WOW into their future careers.
students in Sullivan's Culinary Arts
program. While dining, students
received etiquette information
and tips from the staff. Everyone
enjoyed the opportunity to interact
and experience fine dining.
Cisco certifications were
among the top ten certifications
sought by employers in 2005.
Sullivan University found their
Cisco program so popular that
they are now offering classes
Students in the
second quarter,
are excited about
the opportunities
generated by
the program.
“I've been impressed with Mr.
Richie as an instructor. He is very
knowledgeable and has considerable
real life experience in his
field. He is very dedicated to the
program and often goes the
extra mile to help his students
understand the daily lessons,”
John Lambert observes.
Brad Elias,
has been with
IBM for five years,
and hopes to
further his career
with Cisco certifications.
He
said, “Sullivan’s BRAD ELIAS
Instructor Nathan [Richie] gives
a 110% to teach me all the skills
required, so I could become a
Cisco Certified Network
Graduate Employment Services is ready to help!
Sullivan’s Graduate Employment Service (GES) specialists give
students practical advice on the dos and don'ts of successful job
interviewing, including effective body language, listening, professional
presentation, and good verbal communication.
Anna Mangold found the GES advice especially helpful. “I always
answered the question, ‘Tell me about yourself,’ with lots of personal
information, such as [that] I'm married with children,” she says. “Now
I've learned that you should respond with only a list of your professional
accomplishments: where you earned your degree, career goals,
where you're from, how your colleagues would describe you, etc.”
Landing a coveted job is no mystery, if you are well prepared and
knowledgeable about the interviewing process. GES is here to help!
