AT YOUR SERVICE In today's marketplace, when most products and services are of equal quality, extra attention to customer service is what gives a business the competitive edge. Instructor Mary Johnikin took several members of her Customer Service class, MKT 201, to breakfast at the Crowne Plaza's Campbell House Inn to highlight the importance of good customer service and gather data for a collaborative learning project. Students found the trip very revealing. “We got the chance to actually experience and analyze the customer service of an organization in person,” commented Julie Buchanan. She continued, “It’s one thing to read about effective customer service, but it is much more practical to experience it in real life . . . I think that field trips are a great aspect that Sullivan University provides; they show you real situations in the work field that truly aid the learning experience.” The class had an enjoyable, as well as, educational experience learning about the elements that create a service culture. A really cool class! In Garde Manger’s first class, Sullivan Culinary Arts students learned how to create magnificent buffet centerpieces from blocks of ice. These sculptures took about four hours - a neat feat on a warm sunny day! Right, John Combs and Ida Marcum completed a beautiful harp design. Sullivan University's faculty and staff were delighted guests for the Culinary program's Asian Feast! First quarter Culinary students, left to right, Mike Stone, Jennifer Wilson, Kevin Woodson, Elizabeth Secchi, Bonnie Steele, Heather Hilliard, Jessie Wilde, Bill Skrivin, Ashley Vannoy, Kristin Davis, Zach Selby, Lauryn Baker, Teresa Shofner, John Porter, and Savanna Whitaker prepared a banquet of mouth-watering Chinese dishes including Cantonese Lemon Chicken, Yangchou Fried Rice, Mu Shu Pork with Mandarin Pancakes, General Tsao's Chicken, Crispy Fish, Wonton Soup, Chinese Noodles in Sweet Hot Garlic Sauce . . . to name just a few! “Scrumptious, delicious, and truly gourmet,” were just a few of the appreciative comments heard from Sullivan staff between bites. New Tutoring Center opens What has four computers, eight tables and five tutors? - Sullivan University's new Tutoring Center! The Center is a new addition to Sullivan's Academic Services. Tutors are available every weekday to assist students with their studies in English, Math, Computer Technology, and Accounting. Sullivan University believes that by providing students with the help they need, all students can be successful. Tutoring services are unlimited and free to students. Musically Inclined Reynold Hall is a hardworking Sullivan University student during the week, but still finds time to pursue his passion for music on the weekend. “Renny,” as his friends call him, just won the first round musical competition at John Michael's, the Nicholasville music club owned by John Michael Montgomery! In September, Renny earned a PC Support Specialist Associate Degree and landed a full-time day job working as a System Administrator at Ohi of America. Reynold Hall At night, he's completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. Despite his heavy workload, he actively pursues his music career with fellow classmate Chris Barker in their rock band ByPro Station. Their band has opened for such notables as rock and country legends Exile and The Charlie Daniels Band. Good luck Renny, as you go to the next level of competition at John Michael's. New! Student of the Month Award The Student of the Month Award is given to a Sullivan student that exhibits leadership in their studies, excels in the classroom and is not afraid to help their classmates learn the course material. Student Nichole Talbert was recommended for the first Student of the Month Award in February by English instructor Nancy Fuller. Nichole said, “I was so surprised to win the award. This has been an inspiration for my four teenagers at home.” Nichole received a plaque, a certificate, a recommendation letter written in her honor and reserved parking for a month presented to her by Associate Dean of Students Rebecca Rocca! She will graduate in March of this year with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Paralegal Studies.
TRAVEL, TOURISM& EVENT MANAGEMENT California Cruisin' Sullivan’s Travel & Tourism Program's Fall Trip took students to the fun and exotic sights of California and Mexico on the Carnival Cruise Line. “Paradise” was not only the name of the students' cruise ship, but was also a fitting description of their trip exploring the sights and sounds from California's Catalina Island to Ensenada, Mexico. A “first-class” experience The trip got off to an exciting start as the airline overbooked the flight. A few students were bumped up to the first-class cabin, and found themselves sitting next to Scott Hamilton, the famous Olympic figure skater! When they landed in California, these students had his autograph on their “Travel Bear,” as well as photos and fond memories of their flight. Hurray for Hollywood In Los Angeles, students received a taste of big city life from expressway gridlock to street performers to shopping to dining at ethnic restaurants. The highlight was the Backlot Studios Tour where they saw several famous movie and TV sets, such as the new War of the Worlds film and the Desperate Housewives neighborhood. During the tour, students learned how “Hollywood magic” is created, as the tour guide explained how almost everything on the sets is made of foam rubber, styrofoam and plastic - even the rocks, trees and the shrubbery! Next stop: “Paradise” The students embarked on the next leg of their trip with a drive to Long Beach, California and their Emily Given and Whitni Tufts with the Hollywood Hills in the background. first stop was the Queen Mary, now permanently anchored in the harbor as a hotel. After exploring the famous ship, rumored to be haunted, Sullivan students continued on to the Carnival cruise ship “Paradise” where they experienced first-hand how a cruise begins, including: how guests are processed onto the ship, how charge accounts are established, how purchases are set up with a “Sign and Sail” card, and how a lifeboat drill is conducted. Great educational experience Students availed themselves of many invaluable opportunities for observing professional voyage event managers in action as the students experienced all that the Paradise had to offer. They had a birds-eye view of how arrangements were handled for endless fine dining opportunities, an assortment of entertainment choices, poolside fun and on-deck activities. Charming Catalina Island The first port-of-call was Catalina Island, a quaint, upscale community just off the California coast. Students enjoyed experiencing the unique lifestyle on the island where people travel by golf carts and seeing a car is a novel sight. They also experienced how a large cruise ship “tenders” or moves their guests to shore when docked remotely at a port of call. Bargain hunting in Mexico The next stop was Ensenada, a mid-size Mexican city on the Pacific coast. Students visited an The Sky's the Limit After retiring from a demanding job of 27 years, most people would take it easy for a few months, but Peggy Thomas is not your average person. She is now a full time student working towards an Associate of Science Degree in Travel, Tourism, Peggy Thomas & Event Management. While working as an administrative assistant at the University of Kentucky and raising her family, Peggy always dreamed of a life filled with exciting destinations. Both her parents worked in the travel industry: her father as an American Airlines pilot for 42 years and her mother as an airline stewardess. They instilled in her a love of travel from an early age. Now retired, Peggy's set out to fulfill her dream by pursuing a second career as a travel agent. “It's exciting to be a student again. I think you appreciate the opportunity to pursue your education even more once you've been in the workforce for a while,” Peggy observes. “I love taking classes and learning from other students.” She is currently developing a travel brochure for the Cayman Islands as part of her studies. Peggy knows the secret to success - keep learning new skills and exploring new opportunities. Her attitude about the future is “the sky's the limit!” Expand your career horizons. They learned never to pay the asking price, but to haggle until the price was right. The students spent their evening sampling authentic Mexican cuisine and dancing at the local hotspots. Some of the students took an exciting excursion to the world's second largest blowhole by way of upscale Mexican transportation - an old school bus without air-conditioning! At Sullivan University's first Volunteer Fair, representatives from local non-profit agencies, including the YMCA, the United Way, the Alzheimer's Association and the Ronald McDonald House, were on hand to answer questions about volunteer opportunities. Students learned ways they could contribute and make a difference in someone's life. California. Homeward bound The trip concluded with a relaxing day at sea playing board games. On disembarkation day, students learned how cruise ships settle their guests' shipboard accounts, unload luggage in an orderly fashion, and clear United States’ customs. Everyone had a wonderful time touring California and Mexico. Students said they not only learned a lot about the travel industry, but also enjoyed learning to tango! BEHIND THE SCENES Sullivan University's Medical Assisting students recently went behind the scenes at the Kentucky State Medical Examiner's Office and the Kentucky State Police Forensic Crime Lab in Frankfort. Instructor Violet Sylvia escorted students from her Anatomy & Physiology III class to tour the facility and participate in a Health Fair. Mike Ward, the forensic laboratory supervisor and an adjunct faculty member at Sullivan, gave students an insider's view of daily operations and autopsy procedures. Students learn volunteering can make a difference their special interests, talents, and free time. Volunteering is also a great way to build valuable experience to list on a résumé! Sullivan University faculty and staff were excited to have the organizations on campus and the representatives were thrilled to have the opportunity to share their organization's mission. “We're very impressed with the professionalism of Sullivan students!” was the common refrain from those who attended.
