emember that every lot of
powder can be blended a slight
bit differently than the previous
lot. Powders can also deteriorate
through age — especially if
subjected to extremes in temperature
conditions during long
periods of storage. Whenever I
buy a new 8-pound can of any
powder, I fire four or five shots
of it over my chronograph, using
a middle-range recommended
load, and I fire the same number
of shots using the same charge
of powder from my older can.
Hie velocities of the two loads
will tell me if one can is quickerburning
than the other. Following
this protocol over the years
has demonstrated there can be as
much as two grains of difference
between different lots of pow-

der when used in the same rifle.
That is enough of a difference
that a safe maximum load with
one lot could be much too hot
with a different lot of powder.
It also means that lot number
XYZ of a powder could be
faster than lot number ABC
of another powder, but that it
might be slower-burning than
lot I)EF of the second powder.
So, is this something we
should worry about? No, but it is
something of which we should
be aware. Never assume that
any given powder will occupy
a fixed position on the burning
rate charts when used in different
cases or even with different
bullets, and never assume that
any two lots of the same powder
are equal in burning rates.

It's not rocket science, but it
does prove that we must pay
attention during every step
in the reloading process and
not assume that either we are
so knowledgeable or that the
writers of the reloading manuals
are so knowledgeable that
everything printed in a burning
rate chart is fixed in stone.
