The A.R.G.O. System
The Benelli MRI is the civilian
version of the Beretta R.\4
Storm. Benelli, a subsidiary of
Beretta, designed the A.R.G.O.
(Auto-Regulating-Gas-Operated)
gas system used by the MRI.
It is the A.R.G.O. system that
differentiates the MRI from
other 5.56mm modern sporting
rifles, litis system was originally
designed for the Benelli M4 Super
90, or as the U.S. military calls it,
the M1014 Joint Service Combat
Shotgun. The system was then
adapted by Benelli for their R1
line of hunting rifles. Then in
2005 the Beretta Rx4 Storm — a
tactical version of the A.R.G.O.
rifle — was marketed to law
enforcement agencies across the
country. The MRI is essentially a
Civilian version of the Rx4 Storm.
With the A.R.G.O. gas
system and its short-stroke piston

very close to the chamber.
With the M1014, this highpressure
gas allows the shotgun
to cycle any shotshells, regardless
of the load, a system that has
proven to IK- incredibly reliable.
The system Incorporates a gas
|x>rt located just forward of the
chamber where the gases are
hotter and cleaner, resulting in
less fouling and more reliable
cycling. This also allows the
use of short operating rods
and reduced recoiling mass.
According to Benelli, in function
testing the MRI "exceeded
the military requirements
without malfunction. The
result is a Benelli carbine with
Marine-tough reliability able
to function under the harshest
environmental conditions."
Field Use
While the MRI is an excellent
choice for those seeking a
home defense-type tactical
semiautomatic .223, for predator
hunters the question is, can it
also get it done in the field?
In addition to my test rifle, I
made a five-day trip to South
Texas in April to hunt turkeys
with the Benelli Vinci shotgun
— and it is one of the finest
shotguns I have ever shot, period
— along with doing some target
shooting and hunting with the
MRI. Thus, I had the chance to
shoot several different MRl's
to get a feel for both how they
function as well as shoot.
I ran several different brands
of factory ammunition through
my own test rifle, including
loads from federal, Hornady,
Winchester and Remington. It
is apparent that, while the MRI
was not built to be a tack-driving
machine, it is accurate enough
for much of what we do. The
best accuracy I got in my test
