WE'VE ALL HAD INSTANCES where
our hand call would "stick"
before or during a calling sequence,
either providing us with
no sound or worse, a disconcerting
screech. There are many
reasons a hand call "sticks."
Sometimes it's due to extreme
cold, sometimes a design issue,
but many times it is from excessive
moisture inside the reed
assembly. This "sticking" is not
to be confused with over-blowing
a call, causing the reed to "lock"
down — a subject for a later time.
When we blow a hand call, we
introduce moisture between the
reed and tone board, which can
trap the reed to the tone board.
T his is true whether the call is
of an open-reed or closed-reed
design. There are several variables
involved, some of which
we can control to some degree.
and some we can't. Many factors
can contribute to this condition.
Many people blow a call "wet,"
that is, they introduce more
moisture from their mouth/
breath than someone else. Iliis
is a condition which is almost
impossible to rectify. For example,
if you chew tobacco while
blowing a hand call, it generally
induces more moisture, as well as
introduces some particulate matter
into the call, both of which
contribute to a call sticking.
Extreme cold can also cause
moisture in the call to freeze,
sticking the reed. It's difficult
to keep a closed reed call from
freezing if the ambient temperature
is extremely low. The
reeds are small and the radius of
the tone board is slight enough
to make it all but im|x>ssible.
