I was born on 19/06/1951 in Constantinople. I studied in the Elementary School of<br />
Chalkidona and in the Zografeio Gymnasium.<br />
In 1969 I was entered the School of Electrical Engineering of the Polytechnic University of<br />
Istanbul where I received my B.Sc in Electrical Engineering and Electronics in 1973 first<br />
among the rest of the students of my class.<br />
I am married and have 2 children.<br />
I am the Director of the <strong>Microwave</strong> and <strong>Fiber</strong> <strong>Optics</strong> <strong>Laboratory</strong> for the last 20 years. The<br />
<strong>Laboratory</strong> has approximately 50 researchers working in the various fields mentioned in the<br />

Research Activities<br />
Being the Director of the <strong>Microwave</strong>s and <strong>Fiber</strong> <strong>Optics</strong> Lab of the National technical University<br />
of Athens (MFOL-NTUA) from its establishment in 1984, my research activities cover a wide<br />
spectrum of topics that are the subject of the general and broad research activities of the<br />
Lab. The following areas are within my range of research activities:<br />

I started my career as an “Electromagnetist”, which I consider the fundamental scientific<br />
discipline of Physics and Electrical Engineering and I have been involved in numerous<br />
research topics such as telecommunication systems, sensors-radar and biomedical<br />
engineering. Although I started as a theoretical researcher in the Hellenic Navy, I was able to<br />
turn to experimental research as well.<br />
Starting my research career in mid-1970’s, it was a time when scientific computations using<br />
digital computers extensively were starting to establish in various fields. However, my<br />
research in solving complicated electromagnetic problems proved the necessity of making the<br />
best use of analytical tools such as integral equation solutions of complicated electromagnetic<br />
problems. During the period of 1976-86 I was involved in research solving formidable<br />
electromagnetic structures such as:<br />
- One of the first approaches to solve the “microstrip antenna” radiation problem using<br />
Green’s Function Theory (N.K. <strong>Uzunoglu</strong>, N.G. Alexopoulos and J.G- Fikioris,<br />
“Radiation Properties of Microstrip Dipoles" IEEE Transactions on Antennas and<br />
Propagation, vol. AP 127 No.6, pp.853-858, 1979)<br />
- The scattering problems within dielectric and fiber optic waveguides (N.K. <strong>Uzunoglu</strong>,<br />
"Scattering from Inhomogenities inside a <strong>Fiber</strong> Waveguide" Journal of the Optical<br />
Society of America, vol.71, No.3, pp.259-273, 1981). This publication received the<br />
International Marconi Award in 1981.<br />
- Scattering of electromagnetic radiation (microwaves or optical) from non-spherical<br />
particles.<br />
In the following further information on the above topics is given in brief.
Ι. Applied Electromagnetic Theory<br />
In the framework of my PhD Thesis I studied extensively the electromagnetic waves<br />
scattering phenomena from non-spherical scatterers especially targeting the microwaves and<br />
millimeter waves propagation through rainy environment. In cooperation with Dr. Α. Holt, we<br />
developed a new method of solving scattering problems using integral equations in the<br />
spectrum domain with the use of computational algorithms. During my career I used this<br />
specific method quite many times for modelling and solving various electromagnetic<br />
structures. After 1976 I studied various structures such as antennas, waveguides, circuits and<br />
more generic structures of interaction between the electromagnetic waves and natural beings<br />
or artificial constructions. The subjects of this research cover a very wide spectrum of topics<br />
such as antenna design in various geometries and technologies, various types of waveguides<br />
either in conductive or dielectric materials, microwave devices and signal processing along<br />
with the in depth study of the interaction phenomena of the electromagnetic waves with<br />
biological tissues and mainly the human body.<br />
The theoretical tools that were developed in the framework of the above work are related to<br />
the following:<br />
• Green function theory<br />
• Integral equations and solving of EM problems using the Method of Moments – Galerkin<br />
Technique and FEM.<br />
• Perturbation methods.<br />
• EM wave propagation in complex materials and dielectric substrates<br />
• EM modelling of monolithic passive and active structures (to be applied in MMICs)<br />
• Development and optimization of hybrid techniques of computational electromagnetism<br />
for solving microwave and millimeter wave problems,<br />
• Computational electromagnetism with parallel processing and high performance<br />
algorithms for solving complex and large scale EM problems.<br />
II. Wireless Telecommunication Systems in microwave and millimeter wave<br />
frequencies<br />
During my job occupation in the Hellenic Navy Research Center I systematically studied the<br />
design and development of control and telecommunication systems of the Hellenic Navy<br />
especially in the field of short and ultra short waves.<br />
Coming to NTUA, I was involved with the design and development of telecommunication<br />
systems prototypes of microwave and millimeter wave frequencies and fiber optics in the<br />
framework of quite many research projects funded by EC and the Hellenic public sector. My<br />
involvement in EC research projects started early enough in the framework of RACE, ESPRIT<br />
programs and continued very actively in the last 15 years with the Calls of 5 ου , 6 ου and 7 ου EC<br />
Framework Programs. In the framework of these EC funded projects I have been served<br />
quite many times either as Scientific Responsible of the MFOL-NTUA related contribution or as<br />
Principal Investigator and Senior Researcher. Furthermore, I have served as overall Project<br />
Coordinator in quite many STREP but also Integrated Projects (IP) of these EC funded ones.<br />
In parallel to my involvement in EC funded projects, I have been contributed in various and<br />
many national projects (EPET, PABE, PENED, AKMON etc) funded by the Hellenic General<br />
Secretariat of Research and Technology of the Greek Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning<br />
and Religious Affairs but also research assignments of Hellenic commercial companies and<br />
the private sector. The main emphasis was on the development of fast electronic microwave<br />
circuits in very high microwave frequencies along and in millimeter wave ones.<br />
For that reason, a large investment infrastructure was made at the MFOL-NTUA along with<br />
the establishment of the Photonics Lab which was based on an ATT Inc donation. Other<br />
associated sub-labs were created such as the Radars and Remote Sensing lab directed by a
member of staff of MFOL, <strong>Prof</strong>. Panayiotis Frangos. This entire infrastructure gave the<br />
opportunity of large development of the MFOL-NTUA in the area of microwave, millimetre<br />
wave and optical telecommunications and a variety of related research topics.<br />
Based on the above I work until present date in the following areas:<br />
RF <strong>Microwave</strong> and Millimeter Wave technologies and circuits: Design and<br />
development of microwave and mmwave systems and sub-systems (Power amplifiers,<br />
LNAs microwave passive filters etc) and development of relevant simulation tools. Design,<br />
simulation, development and characterization of MMICs and hybrid (MICs) wireless RF<br />
circuits. Development of system analysis in macros environment for specs definition and<br />
verification of the overall system performance and functionalities. Design of overall<br />
transceivers for telecommunications, control, signal processing and modelling.<br />
Antennas design and development and related integration technologies:<br />
Simulations, optimization, development and measurements of various types of antennas<br />
and arrays in various geometries (planar, patch antennas, collinear), frequency bands<br />
(L,S,X Ku band, multiband), and various technologies for integration (microstrip, 3D etc)<br />
and applications (broadband, narrowband, smart antennas, reconfigurable). Design and<br />
development of matching techniques and electronic steering along with beamformers and<br />
phase shifting circuits. Development of relevant simulation tools (analytical modelling<br />
and high performance algorithms for array modelling and simulations).<br />
Telecommunications systems, Radars and satellite communications:<br />
Development of design and development of application specific radars, design,<br />
development and testing of digital telecommunication systems, software development for<br />
the control of sensor network systems, compliance of avionics to satellite<br />
telecommunications standardization (ARINC 741, 761), development of satellite<br />
transceivers L-band (1-2 GHz) and air transferred sat CDMA terminal 2-8 Mb/s,<br />
development of mobile telecom system to support multimedia services of HELLASSAT etc.<br />
III. Remote Sensing Systems<br />
While working in The Hellenic Navy research Center but also afterwards, I worked for the<br />
design and development of prototype surveillance and signal transmission systems. During<br />
my presence at NTUA I deal with a variety of topics in the remote sensing field especially<br />
related to the inverse scattering problem and the propagation of electromagnetic waves from<br />
hot thermal bodies.<br />
IV. Biomedical Engineering<br />
After obtaining the position of staff member in 1984 at the National Technical University of<br />
Athens (the oldest Technological University in Greece), I realized the importance of applying<br />
science and in particular the electromagnetic technology in Biomedical Engineering which was<br />
starting to appear as an independent engineering and scientific field. The aspects of<br />
biomedical engineering on which I have concentrated my effort during the last 23 years are:<br />
- Hyperthermia as an adjuvant therapy of some Cancer types in conjunction with<br />
Radiation Therapy has been an important topic that has received international attention<br />
during the last 20 years. Various disciplines such as electromagnetic and thermal<br />
modelling of the human body, design of novel radiators and control systems are involved<br />
in developing hyperthermia systems to be used in medical clinics. In the framework of<br />
this research, extensive work has been carried out in modelling the interaction between<br />
the human body and electromagnetic waves, as well as in designing and developing new<br />
hyperthermia devices that have been used in several European Clinics (Greece and<br />
Germany). Direct involvement with clinical research verified my deep belief that<br />
“Fundamental scientific questions arise if one is involved in experimental and theoretical<br />
research in parallel”.
- Brain Research. Extensive study of Event Related Potentials using signal processing,<br />
inverse methods and <strong>Microwave</strong> Radiometry. Imaging and reconstruction of evoked brain<br />
potentials: real-time evoked potential tomographic system<br />
- Inverse scattering problem: Focusing on the task to develop an acoustic of<br />
microwave technology mammography system, various methods based on Diffraction<br />
Tomography were developed. An extensive work program in examining various<br />
alternative inverse scattering methods has been implemented.<br />
- Biophysical modelling of human cancer incorporating a wide spectrum of data<br />
including medical images, biochemical, protein and gene expression data, as well as<br />
pathologoanatomical data. The principal aim is to develop in-silico oncology methods.<br />
- Biological tissue imaging using non-ionizing radiation: development of diffraction<br />
tomography systems, microwave radiometry, imaging of excitable tissues in the human<br />
brain<br />
- Medical image processing and techniques: segmentation and reconstruction of<br />
various medical data<br />
VI. Optical Systems<br />
In the framework of my work using optical methods in telecommunications I was involved<br />
with the analysis of complex structures i.e. couplers, non linear optical waveguides,<br />
propagation in dielectric materials and structures etc. Development of optical transmitters<br />
and receivers, and optical connections for both analog and digital signals. Design of new<br />
optical circuits, fiber waveguides, and Gbit/s electronic circuits<br />
Involvement in Research projects<br />
During the last two decades (1988-2008) I have pursued research programs in the following<br />
fields:<br />
- Design and development of microwave circuits and systems. Various<br />
telecommunication modems used in satellite and terrestrial communications have<br />
been developed starting from concept and up to test and evaluation.<br />
- Design and development of high speed electronic circuits (analog and digital) in fiber<br />
optic transceivers.<br />
- Design and development of new-type coherent radar systems as sensors in<br />
applications such as:<br />
• Detection of trapped people in demolished buildings after an earthquake<br />
• Anti-stealth radars to detect targets of very small echo<br />
• Detection of leaks in underground pipes<br />
• Ground penetrating high resolution image radar<br />
• Navigation in three dimensional space with high accuracy<br />
• Multi static radars<br />
- High speed digital signal processing circuits including A/D converters, FFT based on<br />
FPGA architectures<br />
- Development of various types of new antennas operating from extremely low up to<br />
millimeter wavelength circuits<br />
- Development of biosensors for prevention of fatigue-caused driving accidents<br />
- Learning technology tools incorporating sensors, data acquisition and internet<br />
technology tools
- High Power <strong>Microwave</strong>s<br />
All the above mentioned research was carried out by Ph.D. students under my supervision.<br />
The number of graduate students that have obtained their Ph.D. under my<br />
supervision is 65 during the last 30 years, more than 20 of whom have subsequently<br />
followed successful careers in academia, both in Greece and abroad. Several of my former<br />
students hold important positions in research institutes, companies and public bodies,<br />
whereas some have established their own spin-off companies.<br />
The primary source of funding of the aforementioned research has been the European<br />
Commission, starting from 1983. Also some funding has been received from domestic<br />
foundations and industry.<br />
During my career he has administered research on various levels such as from the position of<br />
Dean of School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (6 years), the founding Director of the<br />
Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (8 years), which achieved being among<br />
the leading contributors of the European Research Programs the last 10 years.<br />

Baseband and IF/RF MMIC parts while the PA, the filter/diplexer and the antenna are<br />
developed by hybrid technologies. The project targets the support of broadband services<br />
through the Gigabit Ethernet FDD transmission for over 1 Km range.<br />
