amCham’S 2011<br />
BuSiNESS BaROmETER<br />
In October 2011, AmCham <strong>Denmark</strong> released f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from its annual survey <strong>of</strong> mult<strong>in</strong>ational companies<br />
with activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Denmark</strong>. The survey looks at each company’s prior <strong>in</strong>vestments and reviews<br />
their expectations for 2012. The key f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> the survey were:<br />
• The high cost <strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>Denmark</strong> is by far the biggest challenge for mult<strong>in</strong>ationals.<br />
Of the companies surveyed, 78% <strong>of</strong> those who are consider<strong>in</strong>g mov<strong>in</strong>g jobs and/or <strong>in</strong>vestments<br />
out <strong>of</strong> <strong>Denmark</strong>, po<strong>in</strong>t to high costs.<br />
• Although 47% <strong>of</strong> the surveyed companies expect to <strong>in</strong>crease their Danish <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> 2012, 53%<br />
<strong>of</strong> the companies <strong>in</strong>dicate that they have considered mov<strong>in</strong>g their <strong>in</strong>vestments outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>Denmark</strong>.<br />
• 40% <strong>of</strong> the companies consider <strong>Denmark</strong>’s ability to attract foreign workers as poor or very poor.<br />
A competitive tax system and openness to foreigners are important areas to address.<br />
a NEw<br />
gOvERNmENT<br />
On October 3, 2011, a new Danish government was formed,<br />
with Helle Thorn<strong>in</strong>g-Schmidt (<strong>Denmark</strong>’s first female Prime<br />
M<strong>in</strong>ister) at the helm. The new Government consists <strong>of</strong> three<br />
parties:<br />
· “S” The Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne)<br />
· “R” The Danish Social-Liberal Party (Radikale Venstre)<br />
· “SF” The Socialist People’s Party (Socialistisk Folkeparti)<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Government’s platform publication,<br />
“A <strong>Denmark</strong> That Stands Together” the SRSF-Government<br />
plans to address several key issues raised by AmCham.
