CHRISTI M. NAVARRO, Graduate Assistant<br />

Christi has been working with the Women’s <strong>Studies</strong> Center as a<br />

graduate advisor since Fall 2008. She has a Bachelor’s degree in<br />

Biological <strong>Sciences</strong> from FIU and a Master’s degree in<br />

Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She<br />

is currently working on her Ph.D. in Public Health at FIU’s<br />

Robert Stempel <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Public Health & Social Work.<br />

Christi traveled to Morocco last summer with the Women’s<br />

<strong>Studies</strong> faculty to attend the Gender and Women’s <strong>Studies</strong><br />

Across Cultures <strong>International</strong> Consortium meeting. Her paper<br />

“Young Women & MENA: Sexuality and Reproductive Health<br />

Challenges in Contemporary Morocco” was a result <strong>of</strong> that trip.<br />

While dedicated to her studies, Christi is also very involved<br />

with the Women’s <strong>Studies</strong> Graduate Student Association<br />

(WSGSA) and was the organization’s 2009‐2010 President.<br />

WELCOME SARAH!<br />

SARAH OTERO, Graduate Assistant<br />

Sarah Otero joined the Women’s <strong>Studies</strong> Center in the<br />

Summer <strong>of</strong> 2010 to help compile the 2009‐2010 Annual<br />

Report. Sarah graduated from <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>International</strong><br />

University in April 2009 with her Bachelor’s Degree in<br />

History and a certificate in National Security <strong>Studies</strong>. She<br />

is currently a graduate student in the FIU History<br />

department pursuing her Master’s degree and a Graduate<br />

Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean <strong>Studies</strong>. In<br />

the Fall she will return to the History department as a<br />

teaching assistant and is scheduled to graduate in Spring<br />

2010. Sarah is also the 2010‐2011 WSGSA Treasurer.<br />

Congratulations Dr. Leah Blumenfeld!<br />

We said farewell to one <strong>of</strong> our Graduate Assistants this summer. Leah<br />

completed her doctoral degree and will be dearly missed. Congratulations<br />

from all <strong>of</strong> us at the Women’s <strong>Studies</strong> Center!<br />

Leah has been with the Women’s <strong>Studies</strong> Center since 2008 as both an<br />

undergraduate advisor and an instructor for the Introduction to Women’s<br />

<strong>Studies</strong> course. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Literature from<br />

Harvard University, a Master’s degree in <strong>International</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> from the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Connecticut, and received her Ph.D. in Political Science from<br />

FIU in April 2010. Dr. Leah Hutton Blumenfeld will begin a full‐time<br />

teaching position in the Department <strong>of</strong> History and Political Science at<br />

Barry University in Fall 2010. Dr. Blumenfeld is also a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Miami‐Dade County Commission for Women.<br />
