Ambassador 

An Open Letter from the American Ambassador 

As my time as U.S. Ambassador to Denmark draws to a close, this is a time for me to reflect on both the past and 

the future. I have been pleased by the close cooperation between the Embassy and the American Chamber of 

Commerce in Denmark, a relationship that has been crucial to the accomplishments of both organizations. 

Working together, we have enjoyed considerable success this year in organizing programs for visiting 

Congressional delegations, most importantly the June 2004 visit of House Majority Whip Roy Blunt. An AmChamsponsored 

breakfast was a special thrill when the U.S. Ambassadors in the Nordic-Baltic region gathered in 

Copenhagen earlier this year. Finally, the tireless efforts by AmCham and its members were vital to the great 

success we achieved in marking American Independence Day in a way that highlighted American business in 

Denmark. 

When I arrived in Denmark in the summer of 2001, the Chamber had 100 members and that membership now 

numbers more than 240. AmCham continues to grow and is now working hard to offer membership and services 

to the many fine companies in Jutland. While I am pleased to have played a small part in AmCham's success, I 

want to give credit where it is due – to the hard work and leadership of AmCham's Board of Directors and 

Executive Director Stephen Brugger. 

Outgoing Chairman of the Board Jonathan Grover deserves a special note of thanks for retaining his leadership role 

even in the midst of planning for an international move of his corporate headquarters. I also want to welcome and 

wish every success to incoming AmCham Chairman Paul Coleman. I know he will continue to enjoy strong 

Embassy support throughout his tenure. 

I also want to note a new AmCham initiative that will become a tradition of its own and offer my congratulations 

to Nypro for winning the brand new AmCham Business Award. 

Lastly, I want to stress what a great honor it has been for me and Wilma to have had the opportunity to represent 

the United States of America in our great friend and ally, the Kingdom of Denmark. The relationship between our 

two great countries is built on abiding ties based on shared values and common interests. For that reason, I know 

that Denmark will continue to be a great place for American firms to do business.

Ambassador Stuart Bernstein 

Ambassador Stuart Bernstein, of Washington, 

D.C., came to Denmark with a distinguished 

career as a successful businessman and community 

leader, both in the United States and 

abroad. 

He arrived in Denmark on August 23, 2001 

and presented his credentials to Her Majesty 

Queen Margrethe on September 3, 2001. 

For over forty years, Ambassador Bernstein was 

a recognized leader in real estate development, 

investment and management in the 

Mid-Atlantic region, with the focus of his 

business efforts centered in Washington, D.C. 

Ambassador Bernstein also has had a distinguished 

career serving many charitable causes. 

His efforts in the community have earned him 

recognition and many awards. Ambassador 

Bernstein is a graduate of American University 

and was a member of the Board of Trustees of 

that institution. He also served on numerous 

other boards, including the Weizman Institute 

of Science. 

Ambassador Bernstein was appointed by 

President George H.W. Bush as a Commissioner 

of the International Cultural and Trade 

Center in 1991. The following year, in recognition 

of his achievements, President George H. 

W. Bush appointed him as a Trustee of the John 

F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 

1992, where he served until he was appointed 

Ambassador to Denmark in 2001. 

Ambassador Bernstein was born in 

Washington, D.C. He and his wife Wilma 

have three grown children, Brian, Adam 

and Alison, and ten grandchildren.

I'm pleased and honored to assume the 

Chairmanship of AmCham Denmark. I 

have followed the development of the 

Chamber since my arrival in 2001 and 

I'm impressed with the level of success 

that’s been achieved in such a short 

time. This success reflects the strength 

of the AmCham global brand, as well as 

the dedication and commitment of the 

Board of Directors, the AmCham Staff 

and a strong partnership with the U.S. 

Embassy. 

As we round out 2004 and move into 2005, the Chamber 

finds itself with an unprecedented opportunity to boost the 

value of AmCham membership in the following ways: 

• Increasing our interaction with Danish Ministries & 

Ministers, whose decisions impact the health and growth 

of international investment in Denmark. We are making 

progress along these lines, as evidenced by the appearances 

of two ministers at AmCham events in recent 

months, Bendt Bendtsen, Minister of Economic & 

Business Affairs, and Claus Hjort Frederiksen, Minister 

of Employment. 

• Promoting the positive aspects of American & international 

business in Denmark. As the voice of U.S. business in 

Denmark, we must share our experiences as well as best 

practices about building productive organizations here. We 

need to work together to inform the U.S. business community 

of the great potential of investing here, and to share 

the success stories. One such example is Nypro, the recipient 

of the 2004 AmCham Denmark Business Award. This

• Solidifying our presence west of the Great Belt. AmCham’s 

Jutland initiative, started this year, has spurred three events 

with the business community there. In addition, Ole Lund 

Andersen, President & CEO, Tvilum-Scanbirk, one of the 

Jutland region’s leading enterprises, has joined our Board of 

Directors. 

• Speaking out on issues important to our members, be it 

stock options, taxation, or economic incentives. But while 

doing so, we must keep looking at the big picture commercial 

environment in the region. 

• Looking to our members for ideas and initiatives. As I said at 

the kickoff to our Jutland Committee, AmCham is about the 

members: we depend on their input, thoughts, and feedback. 

The members drive what we do at AmCham, so their 

participation is vitally important. 

In closing, I want to thank our outgoing Chairman, Jonathan 

Grover, for his leadership and hard work. We wish Jonathan 

all the best as he moves on to Switzerland in June 2005. 

Thanks as well to the U.S. Embassy staff for its support and, 

in particular, to Ambassador Bernstein for his dedication to 

helping make AmCham a vibrant, assertive, and growing

Our Mission 

The American Chamber of Commerce in Denmark (AmCham Denmark) is 

a non-governmental, not-for-profit business association committed to 

furthering the development of economic and commercial relations between 

the United States and Denmark. AmCham Denmark advocates and supports 

unrestricted trade and investment between our two countries, leading to 

a healthy, open, and productive business climate. 

With more than 240 member firms, AmCham Denmark represents the 

business interests of American firms located in Denmark and also acts on 

behalf of its many Danish members that maintain significant commercial 

interests in the United States. 

AmCham Denmark receives no subsidy from any governmental body 

and relies solely on membership dues to cover its operating expenses.

AmCham Denmark serves as the collective voice of American-Danish business 

in Denmark and takes action to further those interests. 

AmCham Denmark works to: 

• Promote and facilitate better business relations between the U.S. and Denmark

AmCham Denmark membership is open to both major corporations and small businesses

Pharmaceutical Committee 

The Pharmaceutical Committee maintained a busy 2004 

agenda exploring the issues of access, pricing, and reimbursement 

under the leadership of Daniel O’Day, General 

Manager, Roche A/S, and a member of the Chamber’s Board 

of Directors, who was named Committee Chairman in March. 

At a session early in 2004, Pharmaceutical general managers 

met to discuss key industry issues with representatives from 

the U.S. Embassy. And in March, Eric Stewart, U.S. 

Commerce Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for 

Europe, joined the committee to discuss challenges facing 

the pharmaceutical industry in Denmark.

Our Vision 

We want International Pharmaceutical companies in general to be recognized 

as an invaluable asset to the Danish Community and to the people of Denmark 

through our investments in research and development of new and better medicines. 

To achieve this, we will: 

• Establish an understanding of how access to innovative pharmaceuticals 

contribute to the improvement of peoples health in Denmark 

• Proactively seek influence in the Danish Healthcare system and to bring 

access to medicines in alignment with international best practice 

• Ensure that decisions made in the future political environment will not 

endanger the availability of innovative medicines vital to patients and society. 

The key focus for the committee is to engage in activities to improve the overall 

image of research-based companies in Denmark through public relations and 

meetings with various stakeholders in the Danish healthcare system in coordination 

with the Danish Pharmaceutical Industry association, LIF. 

Currently, general managers of the Pharma Committee are cooperating closely 

with LIF to move forward on important common industry goals.

Human Resources Committee 

The Human Resources Committee’s mission is to provide a 

meeting forum for its members to consider strategic issues, 

facilitate the regular exchange of information, share best 

practices within the area of HR management, and provide 

a policy platform for key issues within Denmark and the 

Nordic region. 

The Human Resources Committee maintained an active 

agenda in its first year under the chairmanship of Lars Wittig, 

Horton International, and the efforts of its Steering Group 

formed early in 2004. “We are extremely satisfied with the 

active participation in the committee’s work,” Wittig says, 

adding that HR issues are proving to be of “relevant strategic 

interest” to the broader AmCham membership. 

Participants considered whether a company should operate 

without a HR department on January 15. Guest speaker Lars 

Holten Petersen, Managing Director of Birch & Krogboe, a 

construction company without an HR department, sparked a 

spirited discussion. The committee met again at a Round 

Table discussion on June 10, “From Skateboards to Neck Ties, 

dealing with Generation “Why,” which addressed how 

younger employees are impacting organizations, how to 

connect with them, and whether they will conform to an

organization’s values. On August 24, the committee welcomed 

Minister of Employment, Claus Hjort Frederiksen, to 

discuss Corporate Social Responsibility. 

The committee plans more such discussions in its effort to get 

to the core of challenging HR issues and put the knowledge 

gained to work for the organizations in Denmark.

See America – Denmark is a cooperation of private sector and 

public sector bodies whose mission is to promote travel and 

tourism to the United States from Denmark through travel 

trade shows, workshops, seminars, and other targeted events 

for our members. We strive to increase our members’ knowledge 

of the U.S. and its destinations so that they can more 

effectively sell to their clients. 

Newly formed in April 2004, the See America – Denmark 

steering group has worked diligently to finalize the operational 

aspects of See America – Denmark in order to build a 

solid foundation for growth, and to develop an active 2004- 

2005 calendar of events, including its Membership Drive & 

Reception at the U.S. Embassy in September; the See America 

– Denmark Website Launch; a See America – Denmark 

Workshop in October; and the See America – Denmark 

Pavilion at the Ferie 2005 Travel Trade Show in January 2005. 

“The backup from AmCham helps build a strong foundation 

to create exciting events for members and, in the future, the 

public,” says See America’s Chairman Cimm Barslev, Director 

of Asia Sales, SAS. The Committee’s activities are generating 

“a strong, positive response,” he adds.

by either joining AmCham Denmark or by joining See

Insurance Committee 

The Insurance Committee’s mission is to build a strong 

professional dialogue between the insurance industry in 

Denmark and its clients, and to inform decision makers in the 

public and private sectors about developments, challenges, 

and trends in insurance for the benefit of all. 

On September 14, 2004, the committee sponsored a seminar 

on Risk Management at the Hilton Copenhagen Airport. 

Experts Allison O’Sullivan, The Coca-Cola Company; and 

Troy Priesmeyer of The Wackenhut Corporation (Group4- 

Securicor) – both are their companies’ directors of Risk 

Management – spoke at “Managing Risk in a Global 

Environment,” an AmCham Executive Forum. Lars Andersen, 

Risk Manager, TDC, moderated. 

Topics included risk financing, multi-line programs, actuary 

reports, and basket aggregates. But there was a bigger story.

Øresund Committee 

The Øresund Committee’s Mission is to identify the “real“ 

Øresund issues and address these issues with government 

officials in both countries. The goal is to build awareness, 

facilitate positive change, and educate other members so 

that they may better prepare for doing business in a more 

unified, trans-national region. 

On January 28, 2004, the committee sponsored an event 

at which Swedish Ambassador to Denmark Carl-Magnus 

Hyltenius discussed ”Danish-Swedish Cultural 

Differences...So Close Yet So Far Away.” His bottom line: 

“We should keep our differences…the difference is the 

interesting part, but when we join together, we become 

a strong combination.” 

The committee expects to continue to grow and bring 

value-added events to the AmCham membership in the 

upcoming year. 

Øresund Committee: Chairman, Steen Blomquist, KPMG, 

is heading up initiatives in 2005 and is seeking input from

Jutland Committee 

In a day of firsts for AmCham, 40 executives from 17 industries 

including IT, shipping, furniture, banking, and executive 

search gathered on March 31, 2004, in Aarhus for the 

“Jutland Committee Launch,” sponsored and hosted by 

TDC at its headquarters. 

The event was the Chamber’s first step in its outreach effort 

in Jutland, which U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Stuart 

Bernstein called “the backbone of Denmark.” There are more 

than 75 companies of American parentage headquartered 

west of the Great Belt; many Danish companies in Jutland 

with business interests in the U.S.; as well as a number of 

Chamber Members with subsidiaries in Jutland. 

AmCham Board members Paul Coleman, General Manager, 

Biogen Idec; Eskil A. Westh, Partner, Amrop Hever; and Kevin 

Fix, Senior Vice President, TDC, spoke to the networking, 

information, and development value of the Chamber. Urging 

the Jutland executives to tell AmCham their needs and concerns, 

Coleman said, “Don’t be silent. We must hear your 

voice. The Jutland initiative is at least 50% in your hands.” 

Jutland Committee: Chairman, Ole Lund Andersen, 

Tvilum-Scanbirk, will hold a planning meeting 

in January 2005 to set programs and goals for

Committee had another banner 

year, marked by ESAC 2004, the 

Committee’s fourth annual executive 

seminar. 

Committee members continued their efforts to build a 

professional and scientific network between environmental, 

food, chemical, biotech, and pharmaceutical chemists, 

suppliers, and users. 

ESAC 2004 was held in April at Symbion Science Park in 

Copenhagen. Among ESAC 2004’s accomplishments: 

shared knowledge about increasing industry productivity, 

and presentations of new developments. 

The industry’s most progressive vendors joined specialists for 

the latest in Proteomics, Pharmaceutical, Biotech and Food, 

and Environmental applications. Organizers proudly noted 

that this year’s seminar attracted 165 participants – the 

largest gathering in ESAC history – in three parallel sessions.

Overseas Security Advisory 

Council in Denmark (OSAC) 

OSAC’s mission is to provide a forum for the American private 

sector in Denmark and the U.S. Embassy that will facilitate the 

regular, two-way exchange of information and promote programs 

designed to enhance the safety and security of the 

community. The Council also shares information regarding 

the general security situation, security techniques and knowhow, 

and disseminates security information rapidly and accurately. 

Organized in 2003, OSAC explored a number of important 

and timely security issues in a series of forums, for example a 

January seminar, the first of its kind here, on personal security.

Buchman, Psychologist, NLP World; David L. Barnes, General 

Manager, Premiere Security Agency; and Peter Gibbons,

During 2004, members took advantage of an attractive 

opportunity: AmCham’s Company & Product Promotions 

program. Early in the year, the Chamber and the U.S. 

Embassy in Copenhagen entered into an agreement to help 

AmCham members arrange customized events at the 75person-capacity 

meeting room and superb restaurant, The 

Diplomat. The service is exclusively for American subsidiaries 

and companies representing American products. Costs are 

based on the nature and size of the event. 

Under the AmCham program, a number of such companies 

have convened at the Embassy facilities on Dag Hammerskjölds 

Allé in Copenhagen’s prestigious Embassy District. 

Events have included a Marsh seminar, a Mattel news conference 

and product launch, a SAS Institute company promotion, 

a Dell company kickoff and dinner, an EMC company 

promotion dinner, and an Elizabeth Arden sales incentive 

meeting.

Organizers and participants pointed out the world-class gourmet 

menu and American wine list of The Diplomat and its 

Owner/Chef Keld Johnsen, which adds an excellent finishing 

touch to events. 

The comments of Birger Holdt, Nordic Sales Manager, 

Elizabeth Arden, an AmCham Corporate Member, are telling. 

His company’s event at the Embassy was a good experience 

that brought value, Holdt says. The price was right, the 

embassy setting and ambiance was “fun,” the food was 

superb, and Chef Johnsen was “inspiring,” Holdt says. Besides 

its practical benefits and logistical convenience, the event also 

introduced his Danish employees “in a small way, to what the 

U.S. is,” Holdt says. The friendly, authentically American 

aspect was accented when U.S. Ambassador to Denmark 

Stuart Bernstein stopped by and greeted Elizabeth Arden’s 

employees at the event, Holdt adds.

Amerada Hess Oil Platform 

It was a good-will visit to one of the most unique and 

striking facilities of an American multi-national corporation 

in Denmark. 

U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Stuart Bernstein, led the 

delegation which included Embassy DCM Sally Light, Greg 

Burton, Embassy Commercial/Economics Officer, Bjarke 

Frederiksen, Embassy Senior Commercial Specialist and 

AmCham Executive Director Stephen Brugger, for a special 

tour of Amerada Hess’s operations in the South Arne field of 

the North Sea on September 9, 2004. 

The delegates were hosted by Amerada Hess Chairman Søren 

Holm, who is a member of AmCham’s Board of Directors, and 

Christen Minos, Managing Director of Amerada Hess. 

Over the last five years in operation, Hess has developed 

innovative techniques for a typically difficult task of extract- 

ing oil from the tight chalkfield reservoirs found in Denmark, 

making Hess one of the industry leaders worldwide. On average 

20 workers on the platform extract oil and natural gas 

from Denmark’s sector of the North Sea oil fields by wells 

which are drilled horizontally under the sea floor. The platform 

pumps great volumes of water into chalk deposits to extract 

approximately 45,000 barrels of oil each day as well as natural 

gas. 

The visit to the super structure was unusual as it was fascinating 

for participants. 

Following regulations, Ambassador Bernstein and the rest of 

the delegation, donned survival gear, including wet suits, and 

boarded a helicopter for a noisy, but spectacular, one-hour, 

15-minute flight to the platform, which is about 250 km from 

Esbjerg on Denmark’s west coast. 

They were given a full tour of the facility – which the 

Ambassador compared to a city – including its living quarters 

and drilling operations. Amerada Hess specialists described 

the facility’s exemplary safety and environmental practices 

and record, as measured by international standards. South 

Arne has had more than 450 days without any lost time incidents 

and a very good environmental record the last two 

years including to stay well within discharge limits. 

“The trip was a highlight of my time in Denmark,” Ambassador 

Bernstein says, adding, “The South Arne oil platform is 

another example of an American global organization doing 

great work and adding value here in Denmark.”

Texas Instruments Opens 

New Facility in Aalborg 

U.S. Ambassador Stuart Bernstein officially opened the new 

Texas Instruments facilities in Aalborg on July 3, 2004. The new 

facilities boost the company’s space by 50%. During the groundbreaking, 

Kim Breum-Christensen, Managing Director, said, “We 

expect a steady progress in the number of employees, and for 

this reason it is important for us to prepare the organization to 

meet future requirements.”

Nordic Cooperation A Key to “New Europe” 

Nordic cooperation – which is being brought to fruition by pending tax, educational, and financial 

agreements – is a key to successfully integrating the entire Baltic region into the growing European 

Union. 

That was part of a frank, sweeping overview on regionalization issues by former Danish Prime 

Minister Poul Schlüter, Special Advisor to the Nordic Council, and former Danish Foreign Minister 

Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, Chairman of the Baltic Development Forum. They spoke to an AmCham

to five other Nordic and Baltic nations, and six other regional nations’ ambassadors to 

Denmark. They gathered November 4, 2004, at the Copenhagen Marriott for AmCham 

Denmark’s Chiefs of Mission Breakfast, entitled “Rethinking the top of Europe: Nordic-Baltic 

cooperation.“ 

The diplomats came to Copenhagen for a meeting of the Partnership In Northern Europe initiative, 

which coordinates efforts to help integrate Baltic nations into the North Atlantic Treaty 

Organization and the European Union (Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are slated to enter 

each next year), as well as to boost security, trade, investment, and business partnerships. 

Event keynote speakers Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, Chairman, Baltic 

Development Forum and Poul Schlüter, Special Advisor, Nordic 

Council of Ministers. 

As Chairman of the Baltic Development Forum and as a policy 

advocate, Ellemann-Jensen said, “my goal is crystal clear:” to 

establish a single Baltic regional market that would remove economic 

and regulatory barriers and would support Russia’s entry 

to the World Trade Organization and the EU. 

Schlüter’s and Ellemann-Jensen’s bottom line: region building 

is happening, should be happening, and will pay dividends for 

Northern Europe and the entire EU. In addition, the “New 

Europe” that will result in part from the addition of 10 new 

member nations next year will create a new EU balance predicated 

on trans-Atlantic cooperation, not on outmoded confrontational 

stances in relation to the United States, Ellemann-Jensen 

said. Looking ahead, for Baltic regional cooperation to happen 

and for the region to succeed, Ellemann-Jensen added that “we 

(the Nordic nations) have to continue to be the good example.”

Sights and sounds of this authentic American Thanksgiving included stirring renditions of spirituals

American football broadcasts. 

U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Stuart Bernstein delivered President George W. Bush’s Thanksgiving 

Proclamation and added some heartfelt thoughts of his own. He recognized the importance of 

coming together and sharing blessings at Thanksgiving during such an “uncertain time” in world 

affairs. Bernstein later personally greeted guests at each table in the ballroom at the Copenhagen 

Marriott Hotel.

Stuart Bernstein at Rydhave, his official residence, at the 

AmCham-sponsored Independence Day celebration on July 1, 

2004. 

Rains briefly sent the guests under tents set up on Rydhave’s 

expansive garden, but spirits were undampened. Chamber 

members mingled with diplomats, executives, and government 

officials of both countries. Ambassador and Mrs. 

Bernstein personally greeted guests in Rydhave’s main hall, 

and then welcomed the crowd to the festivities from the outdoor 

stage. The grounds were decorated with flags, balloons, 

and banners, and the bill of fare conjured up the best of traditional

among the American and wider communities in Denmark as

Welch, who was in Denmark to address a seminar co-sponsored by 

the Confederation of Danish Industry and Berlingske Tidende, said 

that more moderate rules are needed in two areas: corporate governance 

and VISA restrictions. 

First, “bad cases make bad laws,” Welch said of the Sarbanes-Oxley 

(S-O) Act, which sets federal rules on domestic and foreign companies 

raising capital in the U.S. The federal law was created to protect 

shareholders after the implosion of some major corporations, such as 

WorldCom, Tyco, and Enron. Welch believes that the law has initiated 

auditing that has built the confidence of everyday investors. But 

he said that S-O’s requirement that companies create audit committees 

comprised of independent financial experts is “silly and ridiculous.” 

This provision is “a killer to smaller companies,” Welch said. 

And second, Welch said that current restrictions on student VISAs to 

the U.S. – enacted in the wake of September 11 – are causing fewer 

foreign students to enter and conduct valuable research in the U.S. 

He called for a more balanced approach to “too vigorous a reaction.”

International Consultant to AmCham: 

Understanding U.S. Business 

Behavior a Key to Success 

Danish managers of American subsidiaries in Denmark interested in keeping or growing those 

operations here need to understand how American businesspeople work and think. 

That was part of what international business consultant Allyson Stewart-Allen told 75 executives at 

“Working with Americans: Building Profitable Relationships,” an AmCham Denmark Executive 

Forum hosted by Bech-Bruun Dragsted Law Firm in Copenhagen on May 25 and by Grundfos in 

Bjerringbro on May 26. 

Bridging gaps in American and European business behaviors is not necessarily easy, Stewart-Allen 

said. There are key differences. In the U.S., “you are defined by what you do;” in Europe’s older cultures, 

it is more about “who you are” and social ranking, according to Stewart-Allen. 

Among other things, this means that Americans tend to be bolder, more open to ideas from any 

source, and less reliant on intricate personal introductions, she said. 

Stewart-Allen drew parallels between American history and contemporary business practices. 

American pioneers were entrepreneurial, taking great risks for success, an ethos still highly valued 

in the U.S. 

She acknowledged that at times, Europeans may see blunt, direct American businesspeople as 

greedy. But instead of greed, such Americans are motivated by a belief that they have little time to 

dally, so they set aggressive goals, make fast deals, and exploit opportunities quickly. 

According to Stewart-Allen, Danes need to understand and appreciate that American 

businesspeople tend to: 

Believe that “the clock is king” 

Expect quick responses to proposals 

Do business first, and get to know clients later 

Want to know almost instantly, “What’s in it for me?” 

Believe that “anything is possible” 

Have less global awareness or acumen than their European counterparts 

Speak with few inferences, and expect the same 

Value objectivity and quantitative data 

Do not want too much emotion in the workplace

The Global Economy Offers New Opportunities 

Following AmCham business, Bendt Bendtsen, Denmark’s 

Minister of Economic & Business Affairs, gave a keynote speech 

to the gathering. He said that globalization is a challenge, not 

necessarily a threat, and is, in fact, an opportunity. Investments 

in education and research and development are the only ways 

to exploit that opportunity. That was Minister Bendtsen’s bottom 

line. 

Investing in the kind of jobs and technologies that will thrive in 

a global economy pays off, he said. Global competition “is not 

just some theory,” he said. It is a “new reality.” The Minister 

argued that Denmark needs to prepare to be a global player 

now, because the expanded European Union has placed the 

nation “once again at the very heart of Europe.”

The U.S. needs to stay the course in Iraq, and depending on the United 

Nations to fight terrorism just won’t cut it. 

That’s part of what a delegation of six U.S. representatives said at a June 28, 

2004, AmCham Denmark Business Breakfast at the Radisson SAS “Royal” 

Hotel in Copenhagen.

the situation in Iraq would likely get better – for the Iraqis and 

for international businesses looking for contracts there – within 

30-90 days after the June 27 handover of power to the 

Iraqis. Still, they did not sugarcoat the difficulties they expect 

ahead in the war on terror. 

Blunt said he was not confident in the U.N.’s ability to act in 

difficult situations, and that NATO is probably a more effective 

force against terrorism. “If we depended on the 

U.N…the world would be stuck in neutral,” Blunt said. 

Still, the representatives said they are optimistic and hopeful 

that things will continue to improve in Iraq, adding that international 

media coverage does not show positive aspects of 

the situation.

The Motor of the Trans-Atlantic Economic Relationship 

The US and the EU share the largest trade and investment relationship 

in the world. They account for about 40% of the entire world economy 

and generate roughly $2.5 trillion in total commercial sales a year. 

Trans-Atlantic flows of trade and investment amount to around $1 billion a day. 

Investment 

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a key part of the trans- 

Atlantic economic relationship. Often overshadowed by 

trade in goods and services between Europe and the US, 

direct investment on both sides of the Atlantic contributes 

hugely to economic growth, employment and prosperity. 

Despite seemingly tense trans-Atlantic relations during 

2003, US FDI in Europe amounted to $87 billion, an increase 

of 30.5% on 2002 figures. Likewise European direct investment 

accounted for nearly 65% of total US FDI at $36.9 

billion in 2003, $10.9 billion more than in 2002. 

Trade 

US – EU trade constitutes the largest bilateral trading relationship 

in the world. In 2003 US exports to Europe grew by 

4.8% to $150.6 billion, whilst EU exports to the US grew by 

8.5% to $245 billion despite a 20% appreciation of the euro 

against the dollar. Although US – EU trade relations are often

Jobs 

Together, European and US companies invest more in each 

other’s economies than in the rest of the world. Very often, 

for US or European companies it is the trans-Atlantic market 

place that provides the major source of global earnings. This 

relationship accounts for many jobs – an estimated 12-14 

million on both sides of the Atlantic. 

European affiliates of US firms directly employed 3.5 million 

Europeans in 2001. It has been suggested that indirect 

employment may take the total close to 6 million European 

jobs. On the other side of the Atlantic, European companies 

in the US provided Americans with just over 4.2 million jobs, 

up to 7 million if one includes indirect employment.

In the US from Europe 

The Trans-Atlantic economy is a two-way partnership, crucial to business 

of American and European origin. In order to illustrate the reciprocal 

nature of the trans-Atlantic economic relationship, we present here some 

figures on European investment in the US. 

Investment 

After doubling between 1998 and 2002 European direct investment in the US on a historical-cost basis broke 

the $1 trillion mark. European investment in the US accounts for 75% of all foreign investment in the US. 

European investment in the US continued to grow sharply increasing from $26 billion in 2002 to $36.9 billion 

in 2003. 

Trade 

2003 was a record year in terms of transatlantic trade flows growing by 7% to $395 billion. US exports experienced 

a dramatic recovery in 2003 rebounding from a two-year downturn to grow by 4.8% to $150.6 billion. 

Jobs 

The trans-Atlantic workforce totaled over 8.4 million employees in 2001. European firms accounted 

for two-thirds of the 6.4 million US workers on the pay-rolls of foreign affiliates in 2001.

The AmCham Annual Membership Reception was held 

October 7 at Rydhave, the official residence of U.S. Ambassador 

to Denmark Stuart Bernstein. More than 110 businesspeople, 

whom AmCham’s incoming Chairman, Paul 

Coleman, identified as a “who’s who” of American-Danish 

business and trade, gathered for the event. 

The Membership Reception has become one of the flagship 

events of the year for AmCham. New members are welcomed, 

existing members are celebrated, and potential 

members are introduced to the Chamber. 

This year, the first annual AmCham Denmark Business Award 

was presented by Ambassador Bernstein during the event.

The AmCham Denmark Business Award recognizes and promotes excellence 

within the Danish – American business community and draws attention to the 

significance of Danish – American trade. 

The winner of the award will have: 

• Contributed to the Danish-American business community by setting new 

business standards, demonstrated innovative ways of managing the global 

market, actively participated in industry partnerships and organizations, 

and achieved significant company growth. 

• Demonstrated solid corporate social responsibility by encouraging diversity 

in the workforce, established community programs or supported community 

initiatives, and promoted global cultural and informational exchanges.

Nypro Denmark, a leading global precision injection molding 

company, won the first AmCham Denmark Business Award. 

“We are setting the bar high with this first award,” Coleman 

says. “This award shows that we are looking far beyond tradi- 

tional growth and sales. The board sees this as an award for excellence, innovation, 

corporate governance, good citizenship, and sustainability. Nypro 

demonstrates all of these.” 

Ambassador Bernstein presented the award to Mike McGee, Nypro’s Global 

Program Manager, and Lou Gaviglia, Corporate Vice President. 

Since being established in Denmark three years ago, Nypro’s staff has grown 

from three to 25 highly trained specialists representing nine nationalities. 

Coleman pointed out that “Nypro’s presence has attracted support companies 

and co-suppliers to the region,” saying that the ripple effect has benefited 

the industry and economy of the Øresund region. 

He added, “Nypro’s international staff exemplifies the kind of value added 

expertise so vital to a healthy, progressive regional business environment. 

Nypro is a model of the kind of American operation that’s right at home in 

Denmark. They are also a model of the future of business in this region.”
